Rotten apples don't belong on the street
Sure, there are legitimate people living on the streets, fallout from the recession, but I've never met them. I've only come into contact with brazen cads, heels, and ne'er do wells who seem to think it's up to the rest of us to support their lifestyles. I used to give: "Sure, buddy, here's a couple of bucks. Get something to eat, okay?" or even chuckled in spite myself (as you related in your encounter), "You need to buy a 40 so you can cop a buzz? Sure, pal, sure. Glad to help. I've been in the same boat before." But over the years, I've grown callous and jaded. Now if you want money from me you have to provide proof, like your kid dressed in rags and without shoes in winter time, or some sort of voucher from a homeless shelter. "No proof? Then get a job, loser."— August 8, 2011 5:33 p.m.
Cognitive dissonance
Whether a person has lived his life to the fullest or not, his death is a desision that's rarely left up to the individual in question. Death will come for all of us, and our ages are just arbitrary numbers. I'm not an absolute fatalist, but I do believe some things are meant to be; if a person chooses suicide, admittedly a sad and unfortunate act, but who's to say, in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't supposed to happen? Life is very complex and death, even more so. What truly happens to us in the afterlife (if one exists) is probably so beyond our concepts of reality that I douby if we could grasp it even if given the opportunity to learn the secret journeys of our souls. In the abstract totality of everything, I admit, I don't know much, but, regarding the complexity of life, death, and ultimately what it all means, neither does anyone else.— August 8, 2011 4:10 p.m.

Gay Little Squirrels
By the title I was hoping to hear about squirrels participating in pride parades with jazz hands. In spite of my expectations, I wasn't disappointed.— July 27, 2011 2:11 p.m.
I Need To Drop
Now I can sleep a wonderful sleep. By the way, it is a beautiful bed isn't it? If I only had an extra $15,000 lying around.— July 17, 2011 3:02 p.m.
SD Film Critics to Host 10th Anniversary 35mm Screening of Ghost World
"Oh, my God. Look at all these 'creeps,'" and, "What, are you in slow motion? Come on move it," are just two of favorite lines from "Ghost World." I love this movie, and the graphic novel as well. Thora and Scarlett look great, Steve Buscemi, Teri Garr, and Bob Balaban are superb, and the script is wonderful. I'll never get tired of this movie. I'm going to Comic Con with Daisy, my 14-year-old daughter. Maybe we'll make it Saturday for the showing, and maybe I'll even talk Daisy into wearing her "Raptor" T-shirt.— July 13, 2011 8:54 p.m.
