The San Rafael Swell, about 30 miles west of the Green River along the I-70 in Utah, is a giant dome-shaped fold of sandstone, shale, and limestone that was pushed up during the during the Creataceious Period, some 60-70 million years ago. Part of this area has geographic features that resemble Mars. As such, the Mars Desert Research Station was set up here in the early 2000s. From a road trip I took from San Diego to Denver in April 2016.
