These are the monsters, Mayor Cox
That is exactly the point, oldchulares! That is why I am calling it the 'backscratchers' club, and it does not bode well for the future, if we are to have any hope of a board of trustees not obligated to the superintendent or any other interests except the good of the public schools in the south county. Sorry to learn that ONeill has seemingly been 'compromised' by the gliz and glam of the soiree an all those elbows to rub.... how would he be able to be critical of any aspects of any proposed contract between the SUHSD and the South Bay Community Services?— September 22, 2014 2:35 p.m.

Cartmill does not represent any area at this time, as he is no longer on the board of trustees. He is running for the Board's new area 3.— September 21, 2014 8:14 p.m.

Volunteer membership on the city commissions is by application, and then appointment, by the City Council. Most meet monthly, altho some less frequently or on 'as needed' basis (Such as Board of Ethics). You can learn more about the charge of each commission, when and where they meet, and which city staff members 'staff' their work on the City's website. There are other commissions as well, such as the Safety Commission, the Youth Commission, etc. However, I listed those who might have some connection with the topic of this story and the comment stream. I believe the recommendations of the Commissions are 'advisory' to the City Council but they should carry some meaningful weight in Council dialogue. One would hope so.— September 21, 2014 3:15 p.m.

According to the City of Chula Vista's website, there is currently one vacancy for a representative from the 'southeast' portion of the city on the Growth Management Oversight Commission. Has this commission weighed in on the proposed developments? Other city commissions with some oversight of these matters might include the Park and Recreation Commission, the Planning Commission, and the Resource Conservation Commission. Of course, there is also the Board of Ethics that might be interested as well.— September 21, 2014 11:40 a.m.

oldchulares: thanks for your insights about Mayor Cox's endorsement of O'Neill in the upcoming SUHSD board elections. Their relationship might explain why Kevin O'Neill showed up on the South Bay Community Services Committee (which both Mr. and Mrs. Cox co-chaired) to support the South Bay Community Services recent "Change Their Lives Extravaganza" Soiree. So much better for him to rub elbows with south bay's moneyed movers and shakers, no doubt. Don't forget that SBSC is the recipient of more than $1 million in annual contracts from the very same SUHSD board! A whole lot of the backscratchers in the same place at the same time.— September 20, 2014 11:54 a.m.

Visduh -- I suspect that rather than worrying about 'straying' across the line into criminality, Brand just moves the line to accommodate whatever scheme he is involved in. He is the manifestation of conspiracy, and his tentacles go wide and deep. Remember the song from the "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas?" --- the governor sings, "I just do a little side step, now you see me, now you don't..."— September 11, 2014 10:02 a.m.

Steve Padilla has good standing to question the illegal expenditure of SUHSD public funds in any print advertisement that 'features' one board member and includes his photo and has more than 200 printed. **Quite simply, it is against the law, administered by the Fair Political Practices Commission, and McCann can be fined for the transgression! The District is not allowed to cover the fine for McCann...the violator must pay himself. Go to the FPPC website and search for 'mass mailings' for details.** Actually, anyone can file a complaint with the FPPC; it is certainly in Padilla's best interest to do so at this time. Make sure you copy the superintendent when you file the complaint with the FPPC...if his office does not now understand the law, he should become better informed. It is the job of his office to prevent such illegal expenditures of the public's money.— September 8, 2014 10:57 a.m.

eastlaker, you are so correct. It is time to clean the Sweetwater Union High School District house and rid the premises of the legions of liars, thieves and grifters now in residence, invited in over the years by the likes of Trujillo, Gandara and Brand and allowed to pillage the district by the likes of the so-called 'trustees' Cartmill (since 1990) and McCann, not to mention the other crooks who have pleaded guilty: Ricasa, Sandoval, Lopez, Too bad the interim board is so weak-kneed, but we are not surprised at their lack of backbone -- guess the County Board of Education has a procedure that removes tenacity and backbones if any exist in those elected to that body -- I just hope they don't give the store away before the new board is seated.— September 7, 2014 10:58 a.m.

perhaps at least he will lose some, if not all, of the County Education pension that was accruing while in 'covered' employment as he sat on the SUHSD dais. I believe that pension came from the board member stipend.— September 6, 2014 12:29 p.m.
