Damaged sidewalks cost city big bucks last year
The city used to claim that sidewalks were the homeowner's responsibility, and had a 50-50 program, where the homeowner paid 50% and the city paid 50%, a kind of grant program. Who is actually responsible?— January 26, 2018 7:55 a.m.
Sandag accused of eminent domain abuse
You are forgetting the rights of property owners. You may not like it, but they own it. Our country was built on property rights. We do not have the Duke of El Cajon and the Baron of Chula Vista who own it all and decide what to do with it. At least, that was the original idea.— December 29, 2017 11:44 p.m.
City okays USD plans to build on three sides of widow’s home
Don't forget that USD operates tax-free. It's a religious institution, isn't it? What does the bishop have to say about this? Church universities do not always make good neighbors. And I think I read the salary of the USD President somewhere. He didn't seem to take a vow of poverty.— December 27, 2017 10:11 a.m.
7-Eleven greenlit to occupy Greene Cat
The Encanto Planning Board idea of a 7- Eleven as gentrification may not meet their expectations. This property is golden - an existing liquor license, which does not appear to be due for any changes whatsoever. This store is not just a "step" - it's forever.— December 23, 2017 12:09 a.m.
Short-term vacation rental explosion
Apartments which convert to AirBnB will also be eligible to apply for liquor licenses. Welcome to a new convenience store selling beer, wine and snacks in your neighborhood, under a liberal definition of "guest." That's in addition to other features of this type of license.— November 16, 2017 5:03 a.m.
Goodnight, Irenic
Is Mission Gathering Church a non-profit Religious institution? Don't get it. Who owns the building?— November 15, 2017 7:25 a.m.
Normal Heights park starvation anniversary
The other joint use playgrounds have the extended use managed by Parks & Rec, and have the same requirements that the Rec Centers have for safety.— November 12, 2017 10:07 a.m.
Normal Heights park starvation anniversary
An interesting fact about the city is that once something is written down, it is forgotten. In the rest of the world, it's the other way around. Even more formal documents, such as deed restrictions, are forgotten. Nobody checks the City Charter, which should be the Constitution for our city. Decisions are just what they decide to do, and who "they" are often remain a mystery. That's how it works. Who reads anything? The pesky people who keep filing those lawsuits seem to be the only ones who can.— November 11, 2017 8:40 a.m.
Goodnight, Irenic
Can a church serve alcohol at their wedding receptions in the church hall? You know, a glass of wine with the meal, a champagne toast? Is the Mission Gathering Church exempt from the laws that governed the concerts? Just wondering. Some do, you know.— November 9, 2017 7:22 a.m.
Old bike-sharing company, new plan
This would not be the first time the Coastal Commission was "blamed" when someone else made the decision. One can only wonder why that particular story resurfaces from time to time for other beach area issues.— November 5, 2017 3:56 p.m.
