George's California Modern
George's is beautifully situated above the Cove in La Jolla and features fantastic views from all three levels. If you have relatives in town and it's not too hot or cold out, I would recommend sitting outside under umbrellas on the Terrace Patio. The view is amazing, the menu is reasonable and yummy, the staff is busy but excellent. The Pacific View Bar serves the same menu as the Terrace, providing a nice alternative if the weather is uncooperative. They have a covered balcony that can have the front face open so you feel like you're outside but with more heat lamps and a rain shield, this balcony in my opinion has an even better view than the Terrace and is narrow- so all the tables are close to the edge. The base level of the restaurant is their pristine newly remodeled "California Modern" restaurant. This menu and standard of service is what George's is really known for. The menu isn't heavy, it's inventive, and their Chef Trey Foshee is so picky about the freshest ingredients- he or his Sous Chef Elizabeth Murray travel to Chino Farms daily and arrange much of the menu from there. This is a place that is serious about food and has an amazing view and professional servers to boot. Their remodel is definitely sleek and modern and totally different than before... I love it!— January 30, 2009 4:28 p.m.
Peohe's
The view from Peohe's outdoor patio and covered indoor (with huge open windows)seating areas provide a beautiful view from Coronado back across the water to downtown San Diego. I had a very attentive and warm young server that I was totally satisfied with. The food is just slightly more interesting than you would expect thanks to the Asian-fusion thing they have going on but still nothing to write home about. The main issue that I had was the indoor touristy "oceanic" tacky decor which can and should be avoided by being led blindly out to one of the patio areas. The food is a little over-priced, you are mostly paying for the view and convienent location about 200 ft. from the ferry landing. I would ONLY recommend Peohe's if you are over 70 or on a date and walking on the ferry from downtown; the ride to and from makes it worth it.— August 21, 2008 2:02 p.m.
Mister A's
I have dined here several times a year for a long time and am very familiar with the establishment. The food is always good and the atmosphere appropriate for the fanciest of occassions or business. However, I dined here last week and had the RUDEST busser I have ever had and a mediocre waitress. The busser was clearly not amused by the smallest of requests I asked of her and as she walked away I heard her swearing under her breath and then saw her talking to the waitress and looking over at our table in a completely inappropriate way. She ruined my ability to enjoy my meal and made me feel very self conscious about my needs, such as being out of water and needing dessert settings. I was really irritated and don't know how a place like Mr. A's continues to employ a girl who can't stand working in a restaurant.— August 11, 2008 1:49 p.m.
Mister A's
I sat on the patio this past Monday with my business associate and a client and had a very pleasant experience. I frequent Mr. A's for business diners but enjoy sharing appetizers and drinks on the patio even more. I would recommend the chioppino style mussels and prawns. Also, our server was excellent. There was one girl amongst several male servers and bussers- I would seek her out and make sure she serves you (I think her name started with an A). She was clearly happy to be at work and was enthusiastic about the food- making it all the better and paid close attention to detail. Mr. A's is still great!— June 12, 2008 7:23 p.m.
