1st Annual Helping Hands Food Drive at Mesa Verde Middle School through Feb. 28 Last year, Mesa Verde Middle School students in Rancho Penasquitos participated in Rachel's Challenge, an anti-bullying program that came out of the tragic events of the Columbine high school shooting. The initiative was part of a multi-year, school-wide effort to equip students and adults with tools and strategies to combat bullying, teasing, and harassment. The point of the program is to allay feelings of isolation and despair by creating a culture of deeper kindness and compassion throughout the school community. "We believe that every little bit makes a difference," says Monica Flores, VP of Programs at the Mesa Verde PTSA. "Take a moment to put some of your extra canned food or pantry supplies in the car right now and make the effort to drop off your item with our students anytime this whole month - our students really appreciate your support." As part of the program, many MVMS students signed a pledge that they will abide by the objectives of the program. Because Rachel Scott, a victim of the school shooting, wrote in her journal that she believed that "these hands will touch millions of people's hearts," the students are organizing around the idea of "Helping Hands". For their kickoff project, the February food drive is a community effort to collect canned food and supplies for 60 local families. "People will never know how far a little kindness can go," wrote Rachel Scott, and the students themselves believe they, too, can make a difference. Donations of the following are encouraged: dry pasta, white and brown rice, dry beans like pintos and kidney beans, peanut butter, canned tuna and canned chicken, canned vegetables like corn, green beans, and carrots, and tomato sauce/spaghetti sauce.
