Lorena Gonzalez's big June fundraising push
Shirley Weber became an "ex-Assemblywoman" only after Gavin Newsom appointed her Secretary of State. (You make it sound like she she was no longer in the Assembly when Gavin gave her the position.) Gavin artfully moved Strong Black Woman Shirley Weber out of his legislative way while simultaneously shafting troublesome Latina Labor Leader Lorena Gonzalez who had earlier staked a claim to becoming an unopposed Secretary of State.— June 29, 2021 9:25 p.m.
San Diego crashes its own campaign disclosure website
Wish the Reader would describe exactly what kinds of information the now-suspended Netfile contract provided the public so that we can fully understand what has been lost. It sounds like ex-GOP Mayor Kevin Faulconer, who signed the original agreement, is more sunshiny-transparent than present Democratic Mayor Todd Gloria, who shut it down without notice.— May 22, 2021 2:14 p.m.
Cunningham manse owner kicks in $3000 for latest GOP House accused
Back in he day, wasn't Democratic San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher the local chief of staff for disgraced, imprisoned and Trump-pardoned Republican Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham? I think so....before Fletcher became an Independent and then found a home in the Democratic Party....before he married Labor Democrat and Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez.— May 19, 2021 10:38 p.m.
Lorena Gonzalez and Shirley Weber – money suck queens
Gavin Newsom named San Diego Democratic Assemblymember Shirley Weber to be Secretary of State -- a good look for him in the year of Black Women Rising -- and got rid of the one person in the State Assembly who wrote brave legislation to rein in cops and require teachers to do more than shelter in place. Weber's bills never made it through the first session and were watered down in the second, but they were trouble for Police and Teachers, whose union money is the foundation of Democratic governors' political organizations. Gavin's appointment of Weber simultaneously shut down another troublesome Democratic woman from San Diego, Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez. who actually passed a law saying that gig workers are not gig workers and deserve employee wages and benefits, no matter what Uber and Lyft say. Lorena was looking to be a shoo-in for Secretary of State and now who knows what she's thinking? Is Lorena Gonzalez's political star setting while her Supervisor husband Nathan Fletcher's is on the rise?— May 19, 2021 10:22 p.m.
Where the Faulconer governor money is coming from
I am curious to know how this Recall ballot will work. There's a Yes or No vote in favor of or opposed to Recall. Then there's a list of wannabe candidates from which voters are to select one name? Will Gavin Newsom's name be among the wannabes?? (I had thought not, because he is not a candidate: he is the sitting Governor.) Do only people who vote Yes in favor of Recall get to move on to the list of wannabe candidates? It seems crazy, but I think if 51% of voters in that election favor Recall, then the winningest candidate on the wannabe list can be elected to replace Governor Newsom, no matter how low that winner's percent of the total Recall vote turnout. If one votes No on Recall, what's to prevent people from going on to vote for someone on the wannabe list anyway, out of confusion or because they are clowns or anarchists? Help, Ponzi, you usually know stuff. How is this special Recall Election going to work?— May 5, 2021 11:21 p.m.
Where the Faulconer governor money is coming from
So, I guess it;'s true what they've been saying: GOP Trump supporters really are the financial backbone of the Recall Gavin gambit. As for Shirley Weber's fund-raising, it's a good time for Black female candidates to raise money. Besides, before Weber's surprise appointment by Governor Newsom to be Secretary of State, it was powerhouse Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez who had her eye on that job. It's not clear yet if thwarted Lorena still intends to run for it next year, but if she does, the incumbent will need a lot of money to remain competitive.— April 29, 2021 12:44 p.m.
Toni Atkins ramps up lieutenant governor run
Gosh, I remember seeing that photograph of Johnnie Perkins on the run! As I recall he was sort of a union-darling, dim-witted but in-like-Flynn with power brokers and ambitious to advance. That he was involved in the expensive City whitewash of asbestos-y 101 Ash Street building is no surprise. Caveat emptor, Spokane.— April 22, 2021 1:37 p.m.
A chip off Faulconer’s donor
Probably potato-magnate Kirschenmann is sorry for pushing his wife around after getting that bad publicity and wonders if his former political pals will still take his calls. I'd bet not, but those handsome ambitious GOP Kevins will always take his money.— March 25, 2021 10:09 p.m.
Look out, Union-Tribune. Alden Global Capital may be just around the corner.
Patrick Soon-Shiong could shutter the costly weak-sister San Diego Union-Tribune; salvage a few strong Watchdog journalists and set them up as the San Diego Bureau of the Los Angeles Times, as in the olden days. Then he could name SoCal native, highly qualified and long-experienced U-T editor Jeff Light as editor of the Los Angeles Times. That's two problems solved, but Soon-Shiong will have to figure out how to make the LAT profitable on his own. Since March is Women's month, maybe he could turn to his smart wife and daughter for answers.— March 9, 2021 11:01 p.m.
Trump and Hunter donors kick in for Faulconer's governor try
By the looks of that photograph, One Paseo developerJohn Kilroy, Jr. may want his big bucks back from our weak ex-Mayor's stealth run to usurp charismatic Governor Gavin Newsom as well as from the demoted and worried minority leader of the U.S.Senate, Mitch McConnell. Faulconer is less formidable a politician than McConnell,, but both gents are members of a seriously discredited club -- the fractured Republican Party of unspeakable Donald Trump, Eagle Scout Mitt Romney and armed and dangerous militia capo Cliven Bundy.— February 16, 2021 6:52 p.m.
