Love fest for Oklahoma's Stephanie Bice and Sara Jacobs in San Diego
What's incredible is not hapless Representative Bice of Oklahoma or the fleabag Gaslamp hotel she stayed in, but the fossil-fueled lobby that invented this faux-civility charade. Maybe it was an idea put up by distinguished sailor and GOP stalwart Malin Burnham of San Diego who, in the bad old days, used to promote "civility' as a way to muzzle controversy. I appreciate knowing from the Reader that political subterfuge, like the Wolf masquerading as Granny in "Little Red Riding Hood," is alive and well.— October 5, 2021 12:37 p.m.
Scott Peters squeezes money from Pfizer, Eli Lilly, Merck, Bristol Myers Squibb
Scott Peters had seemed a practical middling Democratic alternative to past right-wing conservative Republican candidates for his seat in the U.S. Congress. Once elected, Peters did not offend. He expressed cool detachment from President Obama's agenda at hometown garden-party fundraisers In La Jolla, and in recent Tea Party years of Trump Republicanism, Peters seemed acceptable and was comfortably re-elected by his comfortable bi-partisan constituents. But reform-minded voters -- and there are more of them now than in years past-- got a wake-up call mid-month when Peters balked and refused to support the longstanding Democratic goal of lowering America's sky-high prescription drug prices for its citizens.. (Drug company campaign contributions reported here got in the way of this needed social change.) Peters actually joined the Republican opposition along with fellow DINO Representative Kathleen Rice of New York (the sister of our ex-Gov. Jerry Brown!) to block this issue. Peters' constituents will not forget his abdication of responsibility next election. We'll see if the Congressman sticks to his ludicrous position that astronomical drug prices underwrite pharmaceutical innovation.— September 30, 2021 2:48 p.m.
Audit hits Donovan state prison for shoddy tuberculosis care, loose injectable handling
Always good to know what's happening -- or not happening -- on the medical front at Donovan State Prison. Good there is a state auditor and the San Diego Reader to keep us informed and grateful that neither we nor anyone we love are incarcerated there. I am curious -- does anything change for the better after a report like this?— September 28, 2021 8:50 p.m.
Waste and Covid-19 missteps plague CoreCivic's border lockup
Maybe Core Civic can fill its many expensive empty beds with the thousands of Haitians waiting under that Del Rio, Texas, bridge. At least they would be in the USA in the asylum system after having traveled across Central America to get here.— September 20, 2021 9:45 p.m.
Maybe Ed Asner didn’t help Peter Navarro
Peter Navarro hasn't changed a bit over all the years he's been a political loser: as snide at Donald Trump's side as he was when Ed Asner did him a solid by publicly endorsing him long ago. Local voters knew what they were doing when they twice refused to elect Navarro to office.— September 8, 2021 11:08 p.m.
Gloria barely escapes fine for donation reporting
Rather than dredge up the semi-illegal past when there is so little ink and time, I would rather know more about Mayor Gloria and Supervisor Fletcher's joint decision to hire two separate homeless czars to oversee "barrier-free" small-group housing for unsheltered people who are abusing alcohol and drugs. KPBS ran a midday interview last week with some happy-talking functionary from the Mayor's office, touting this detail-free collaborative fantasy. Most homeless shelters require sobriety for admission, but Dems Gloria and Fletcher are progressives and proud to wave that banner while waiving that "barrier.," According to the aide, no locations or budget for czars or services have been proposed.— September 1, 2021 6:56 p.m.
San Diego County wants social equity in pot regs
Too many consultants make Supervisors dull boys and girls. This one on County marijuana-promotion is ridiculous.— August 19, 2021 10:35 a.m.
Allen Glick and the killing of Tamara Rand
Whataguy.. A cleaned-up paid obituary, eh? He was on or led the board of Scripps Hospitals too, I think. He has a lot to atone for, so I hope he leaves the JCC a lot of money.— August 6, 2021 9:18 p.m.
San Diego showers money on homeless
The unfortunately-surnamed Ms. Kaka may be the perfect person for San Diego County's entry in the Homeless Sweepstakes, racking up her third job in a So Cal community in as many years. Does she ever get beyond probationary status? What can our legislators be thinking?— August 4, 2021 8:55 p.m.
Father Joe Carroll: death of a transactional cleric
The U-T's designation of Father Joe Carroll as a "hustler priest" seemed disrespectful to me, while the Reader's obituary is closer to the truth of the man. Father Joe was a transactional priest who seemed to enjoy the politics of supporting causes and people who would bring in money for his homeless enterprises -- none of which existed before he came on the San Diego scene and which have benefitted many lost souls. His associations may have been iffy, but his handiwork transformed lives. RIP.— July 27, 2021 1:28 p.m.
