City’s top planner and a waterfront museum quietly go bye-bye
I'm not a philistine, but If there were no particular type of"museum slated for the Navy-Broadway complex, I don't see why it matters if it's dropped -- even though the Coastal Commission mandated a museum be included in the redevelopment. I would say in this instance the revered and embattled CC has overstepped. I am open to being scandalized by this happenstance, but I will need to know why this is not an apparent nothingburger.— November 13, 2021 6:25 p.m.
Darrell Issa's $50 million
That city "wayfinding" device sure sounds like an outdoor advertising billboard to m, and. I thought those were illegal.. I guess the 49% rule for commercial ads is what gets it under the wire. Otherwise, maybe I'd appreciate advance notice of a bomb-cyclone or a Gaslamp shooting, even if there is visual clutter.— November 4, 2021 6:48 p.m.
Toll Brothers, Brookfield, Monarch vie for Sports Arena property
I once had a landlady who proudly told me the same thing the first summer I lived here. Then she gave us her tickets to the 1970 Laguna Pageant of the Masters, so I understood better where she was coming from, and just accepted "different strokes for different folks." It used to be fun, David, before the concrete and chainlink labyrinth was set up and it took only minutes to cross going South.— October 28, 2021 8:58 p.m.
Toll Brothers, Brookfield, Monarch vie for Sports Arena property
I'll just stay home here in East Berlin rather than cross the Mexican border at an official checkpoint in the next 30 days, even if the new "safe" technology doesn't x-ray me. It may be bad for the metro San Diego-TJ economy, but it will be a personal win/win. I won't have to refuse trendy passive thermal and video surveillance nor will I be sniffed by drug dogs and subjected to Stasi officers' rummaging through my purse or person.— October 28, 2021 3:58 p.m.
Let them eat French Charolaise steak
Who ever dreamed that corporate behemoths Nestle, Chevron. Terminix and Coca-Cola would "partner" with whatever the "United Nations Foundation" is to run a "Food System Summit." What does this tell us about our world;; about the distortion of language and subterfuge perpetrated by international special interests to disguise their self-interest; about our Qualcomm heiress and Congressperson Sara Jacobs -- who included U.N. employment on her political campaign resume and now sends a young aide to participate in this dubious far-away junket. The pattern is familiar though, having been established by Jacobs' globe-trotting Congressional predecessor, now-retired Susan Davis. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.— October 27, 2021 1:11 p.m.
Son of L.A. councilman indicted in USC scandal backed Gloria's mayoral campaign
Apparently the pull of nepotism has sucked Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas under. A disastrous scandal involving his punk son Mark -- not even a shadow of his distinguished father -- will end the father's lifetime career contributions to Los Angeles and California Democratic politics. It is a great pity. That Tod Gloria's mayoral campaign took money from a slick fellow millenial legislator is no surprise, but it is disgusting.— October 18, 2021 9:39 p.m.
Barbara Bry readies run for San Diego County Assessor
Hmmm, a "renewed interest" in an anti-VRBO political candidate's husband's big investment in a company that cracks down on short-term vacation rentals? And, on being questioned, the husband hangs up on the reporter? Not a good look. Probably it's hard to rein in feisty, funny, entrepreneurial husbands, but it's advisable if Barbara Bry wants to win.— October 11, 2021 10:54 a.m.
Union-Tribune begs advertisers to use its Spanish edition
What exactly is a "schill?"— October 8, 2021 9:36 p.m.
Union-Tribune begs advertisers to use its Spanish edition
I want to comment separately about sending remarkable Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez every good wish for a full recovery from her radical surgery for breast cancer and to thank her for her candor and bravery in confronting a difficult diagnosis. Lorena herself is a radical, candid and brave figure who has done much as a committed legislator in Sacramento for Californians in general and working people in particular. I believe Lorena has the makings of California's first woman governor and, when she is feeling well again, I hope she will renew efforts toward that end. Lorena Gonzalez absolutely has what it takes, the right stuff, and I want to encourage her to keep on keeping on.— October 7, 2021 11:37 p.m.
Union-Tribune begs advertisers to use its Spanish edition
The Reader sounds like a jealous sibling when describing the U-T's latest effort to tap Spanish-speaking Latino readers with its newest outreach, a Spanish language edition of the real paper that is not a supplement. It's a great idea, really, and I hope it works. Obviously, for newspapers to seek advertisers in any language these days is a quixotic quest, but idealism about community seems to be what drives physician/scientist/billionaire newspaper owner Patrick Soon-Shiong of Los Angeles. Soon-Shiong is even investing in new bio-medical research for disease-prevention in his native South Africa. I think his ideas are admirable.— October 7, 2021 11:04 p.m.
