Police Officer Shootings
Hey josh: not just pot smokers, but meth, crack, crank, heroin, and prescription pill addicts. Charged with possession (not enough on them to distribute). I don't condone drug use and there has to be a consequence - but "just say no" ain't it - that philosophy doesn't work. They are in the mix in prisons, a very large segment of the prison population at any given facility, being "punished." But punishment is not going to fix the problem. I would rather fix the problem. I'm coming at this from a pragmatic, not bleeding heart point of view. Reduce demand; reduce the market; direct tax dollars elsewhere. It would not cost more to restructure what is already in place. It just requires an open mind and dropping the negative moralistic attitude many have about addiction. As for the rest of the people in prison, many are right where they belong. Ultimately, that's about choices, not racism.— April 25, 2009 5:30 p.m.
SDPD -- Got An Attitude?
"Sdg" at post #39 wrote the most intelligent and reasoned response to this article. Thank you. I remember when I first read this story, and I just shook my head. None of us where there, and I would have hoped after all this time and after the spread this matter received in The Reader, if someone had a contrary version to Mr. Vega's (like, perhaps, the thumb muncher himself) they would have come forward publicly with additional FACTS. We'll never know because procedure was not followed, which to me is often nearly as serious as the other extreme.— April 25, 2009 5:13 p.m.
The Loss of "Cool"
RefriedG: you're a poet even in your comments to someone else's blog. Your approving prose is greatly appreciated. I say we all tip back a shot to cool broads everywhere! Thanks again, Lisa a/k/a "lallaw"— April 25, 2009 12:28 a.m.
Police Officer Shootings
Spliffbaby: You actually had me agreeing with what you wrote at post #94, then I read this: "If you are good or bad the government still would love to have every one lock away and used for cheap labor. That's why the prison industry is a billion dollar industry. That's why amerikkka has over a million people behind bars , and mostly for non violent crimes." Heard my coo-coo clock go off and realized it was time to start dinner. True though many are in prison for non-violent drug related crimes for drug usage. They should be separated from the prison population and receive treatment/education as abstinence in prison isn't treatment and the criminalization of addiction makes little sense to me. Might have less re-offenders in this class of the prison population. However, trust me many are right where you would want them to be, or are being rightly punished for financial crimes as they should be. But I digress...— April 24, 2009 5:26 p.m.
What have you done that most people haven't?
Darlin (SD), he was just a cute boy from the Valley when I met him :) He did work his a** off in those days, and at least for me, the product did what it said it would. Well, all I can say is the moral highroad is a lonely place...lol. And I have to admit when I caught an episode of those Million dollar realestate guys on BRAVO, and the one guy/kid genius was looking for a Malibu beach house for Mark Hughes' ex-wife and their son to rent for the summer at $75,000 PER MONTH.... I gasped. Am I evil for my brief moment of regret? Guess there's a little bit of gold digger in all of us....well, not you as you are a class act...but I was a member of the Bar once, after all.— April 24, 2009 3:44 p.m.
George W. Bush Today
Suzanne (SD :)-you are dead on with the "homesy" Reganesque spin used to get Bush elected and God FORBID to promote Palin in a 2012 Presidential run. I think the Old Guard thinks they hit on one tremendously successful recipe with "The Great Communicator" Regan and they're just going to stick with that until they hit it big again. You are right, it is a stomach clenching, not to mention insulting, concept. When they were calling Palin "Reganesque" after her "you betcha-ing" and winking through the debates I was beside myself. I was more frightened though than flabbergasted by the comparison (I can't say I was pro Regan when he was in office, but I've since read up on the man and have come to respect him and his accomplishments - especially with Gorbachov - since his death). But I was frightened because I thought that folksy spin thing might just work with people and deflect attention away from her seriously lacking qualifications. Thank God people were too pissed off to be bedazzled once again.— April 24, 2009 3:39 p.m.
A Cop and Contestant in a Pagaent
Suzanne you must be a celeb magnet! I've had so few "bumps with the stars," alas in NY and LA and never ever in SD. (But once in Iowa, go figure). I think the Perez Hilton question to the CA beauty queen was a fair question. Loaded, yes...but she could have handled it in a way that didn't honk off a bunch of people and still been true to her feelings. If she was "crowned" (and this whole beauty pagent thing is so insane I can't believe I'm even talking about it) she would have to deal with and deflect all kinds of people and questions that she would need to handle in a more sensitive way than she did that night, as joshb inferred above. She didn't pass the test, period. And I think she's just a big whiny baby to claim she "lost" solely because she said that...thereby justify her moralistic opinion about homosexuality and marriage...maybe she lost because she wasn't all that compared to the other barbie doll running against her? Anybody ever watch "Six Feet Under"? I loved that show....— April 24, 2009 3:28 p.m.
What have you done that most people haven't?
What doctors have done to MJ's face for financial gain is criminal. Ethically they are REQUIRED to not perform surgery like. Especially there is a question about the patient's mental stability or health. And they are supposed to do no harm. Can't look at his face now and think anyone adhered to that oath. As long as we are talking about woulda shoulda coulda's, I was pursued by Mark Hughes when I was 19 and living in LA. Mark was the founder of Herbal Life. When I met him he was just starting out and had a little store front he'd rent in Beverly Hills to recruit sales reps. I was totally smitten with him, but he had a girlfriend and I told him I wasn't a cheater. He kept trying to convince me he was in love with me and that he had (or would) end it, but her father had initially backed him financially and he felt he couldn't just end cold turkey it without repercussions. I didn't think it was right and didn't want to be the reason he broke her heart - she was very into him. So I not only shut him down, but moved so he wouldn't keep coming by my place and call and wear me down. I never saw or spoke to him again after that. God Bless him when he died in 2000 he was worth 400 million. See, no good deed goes unpunished ...lol.— April 24, 2009 3:26 p.m.

George W. Bush Today
Hey SDaniels! No he had a manly Texas-type swagger and when I say "tough when he needed to be" I was actually thinking back to his demeanor and speeches right after 9/11. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan politically, but I can't say there was nothing about the guy I could stomach or like ....as hard as I tried. Now guys like Limbaugh, or Gingrich, or Cheny (who I think is just plain evil)... I see no redeeming qualities in them.— April 24, 2009 2:12 p.m.
