More Pig-Head Press
Seth - You said this year's SDMA's sucked. Lee Williams said this year's SDMA's sucked (he was quoting you). I think this criticism about the SDMA's should be taken as constructive criticism and maybe the thing will get better next year. Please don't backtrack from what you said when others bring it up. So Seth, let me get this straight. Did Lee say something that was "false" ? I think he was was just repeating what you had already written about the SDMA's. Hmmmm... Death metal band Mayhem from Norway has done the pig heads many times before. I will get you other names in a future blog. The whole point is that Burning of Rome did a very coarse, crude and rude gimmick when they played the SDMA's that they do not normally do when they play. Although it has been done before, it was clearly done to get a rise/response. So they GET the response and then they complain. Come on guys! You want to get exposure and controversy, and then when you get it, you complain that you are getting mistreated!

Hey Seth - As writers we are not to correct the quotes, we just supposed to write what was said. Kevin Hellman is publisher of CityBeat so he runs the CityBeat business. And Kevin Hellman also runs SDMA. I think that is what gave Lee and others the perception that the two are very tight. CityBeat sells a lot of ads connected with the SDMA's, and unless I am mistaken, CityBeat/Hellman also puts out the official directory for the SDMAs. Regarding CityBeat running the SDMA's, I think that was a general perception that is held by many. Kevin: I was never aware that I was part of your academy. I send back to you a ballot with some artists listed in certain categories. What's this 'academy' kemosabe? Because I voted does not mean I have to "disclose" to anyone that I voted because it means I'm on your academy. You never asked me to attend any meetings where you select those who would be nominated. I voted on a multiple choice ballot just like everyone else. And yes Seth, wasn't that you who originally wrote the points (also brought up by Lee) citing why this year's SDMA's sucked? Hmmmmmm....I think we are a little confused Seth. Yes the Burning of Rome is a fine band. I'm not so sure what made the night such a s---y experience for them as Seth claims. They were trolling for publicity with the pig heads and they got it. If there was also negative fallout because the it was too crude or cheesy, they should not be surprised. The only line from Lee I don't get is: "Everything original and creative has at one time been critiqued harshly by those who don't appreciate or understand it." The only problem is the pig head gimmick has been done a few times before. Oh no Lee, I understand it. At least I understood it the first ten times.

Of course it was Lord of the Flies. We should have caught that. I stand corrected. I think if you want to use a rock show cliche that has been used dozens of times, go with it! Sure there was a liittle blood, but at least you didn't fall back on elves dancing around mini Stonehenge formations. I'm told you had to pay for your your pig heads. That they go for $20-$25 each, and that butcher shops don't give those things away any more than they give away cow intestines for menudo or pig intestines for those lard-fried tripitas. Oh, and thanks for getting us up to speed. I didn't know pig-heads-on-poles equals "eclectic art rock." I got it now.

Union-Tribune Axe Falls Again. Kittle Reportedly Out

X-Fest Takes a Rest?
Thanks for being honest and up front David. I understand that there are people out there who are unhappy. One person I know of just cost SDSU $3,000 because of his involvement in a lawsuit that SDSU lost in good part because of him. I wrote the story, now he's on the warpath. I heard second hand that the program director of 91x is now unhappy as well, but if his boss doesn't want to answer honest questions, I don't think I'm the bad guy. I ask you: is the X-fest story above not significant? I think any reasonable would say that it is. I could give you examples of tons of important stories that blurt has broken over the years. Most recently we covered reggae at the Del Mar Fair and the U-T wrote about five days later. We wrote about the all-ages dance parties and the next Monday it was on TV news. Sometimes these stories involve people ripping other people off and some of those people are just not going to be not happy. I know being called an "ignorant slut" just goes with the territory.

X-Fest Takes a Rest?
An anonymous blogger throwing out "least trustworthy." Irony. I would like 619yuasa to point out what was "untrustworthy" about this or any other piece. And when you do so, please sign your name. The last personal slur I got was "ignorant slut" written by an assistant editor of CityBeat regarding the necessary name change of North by Northpark. Turns out she had no idea what she was talking about and she embarrassed herself and her paper. But at least she signed her name.

X-Fest Takes a Rest?
There were years when there were no X-Fests but there were never any years out its first 25 when the station didn't throw at least one multi-band concert. I think this is a story because thousands and thousands of us can relate to those great shows with Green Day, New Order, Jane's Addiction, Social D, The Ramones, Tom Petty and X. Remember the Mex Fest with Oingo Boingo at the Agua Caliente racetrack? The station used to be bigger than life. Now they are getting all excited about giving away tickets to get on a bus to see some show in Pomona ON THE SAME DAY AS THE SD WARPED TOUR. Yes the My Chemical Romance show which was headlined by AFI sold out. What's your point? My point is that My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Paramore and some of the other artists that 91X has played over the last five years pretty much tells the story of what 91X has become. Maybe that's why Mr. Reeb did not want to comment. Some of us still think radio could matter.
— August 5, 2009 3:15 p.m.
He's Got the Cheese
Nobody said Cros was a hater. Two different promoters simply said that he was by far the biggest hip hop/break dance/MC dude in SD and that he was not giving them as much in-store love as they wanted. Cros was forwarded all his quotes before the article went to press for his approval. That included: "I think a lot of people expect a lot of things. If we put up one or two posters, then the whole store has to be available for everyone else's stuff. I think you would find that nine times out of ten people would say we are open to working with other people." He said it and he approved it. To the guy who said he stopped reading the Reader two years ago, I guess that means you started again?

Tick, Tick, Tick...
Dear Matt Hall - I did not make the Union-Tribune write about your problems on May 14, NOR did I make the North County Times write their front page story on May 24 about your ongoing trainwreck. I think it just might be the City of San Marcos and the sheriff department talking about your massive legal problems over two years that made them write their stories. There needs to be an all age music in North County, but I wonder if anyone will step up to the plate now that you have made the business look so bad. You have given live music a bad name in North County. You need a scapegoat for your trainwreck and you want to pin it on me since I was the first one to expose your mess. I also accept your unsuccessful efforts to have me fired because that is just the way you do business. But you have actually told people and have written that I called the police on you. Bad idea. The sheriff keeps records of who called in. That is a provable lie. I hope you are prepared for the consequences of your actions.
— May 25, 2009 9 p.m.
Tick, Tick, Tick...
Wow all these personal attacks! What I would like to know, is why doesn't the Jumping Turtle attack the Union-Tribune reporter who reported in a story May 14 that the Jumping Turtle has caused sheriff deputies to stop by 137 times in the last two years and that there have been 25 fights, 35 incidents involving people under the influence of alcohol or drugs and a total of 23 arrests. I urge anyone interested to look up that article on line to see what I'm talking about. I also wonder if anyone noticed whether the Jumping Turtle has been abiding by its new permit (which they agreed to) which says that as of May 1 no one under 21 can be present when there is live music and that that there be no admision charged at the door.

You want to get exposure and controversy, and then when you get it, you complain that you are getting mistreated!— September 29, 2009 9:08 p.m.

At least I understood it the first ten times.— September 29, 2009 1:15 p.m.

I didn't know pig-heads-on-poles equals "eclectic art rock." I got it now.— September 23, 2009 4:29 p.m.

I know being called an "ignorant slut" just goes with the territory.— August 7, 2009 3:53 p.m.
But at least she signed her name.— August 7, 2009 11:59 a.m.
Some of us still think radio could matter.— August 5, 2009 3:15 p.m.
To the guy who said he stopped reading the Reader two years ago, I guess that means you started again?— July 9, 2009 12:31 p.m.
I hope you are prepared for the consequences of your actions.— May 25, 2009 9 p.m.
I also wonder if anyone noticed whether the Jumping Turtle has been abiding by its new permit (which they agreed to) which says that as of May 1 no one under 21 can be present when there is live music and that that there be no admision charged at the door.— May 18, 2009 3:50 p.m.
