Rob Stone, Lemon Grove's Soulja Boy
It's great that the Reader ran a cover story on the local rap scene. But, um, I have a question for writer Jonah: Do you think maybe you kind of missed a crucial part of the story? This whole article was triggered by the much publicized on-stage attack of XXXtentacion at the Observatory. But just like Toto pulling back the curtain on the wizard of OZ, this whole rap scene looks like one big scam. Because not only does XXX perform with prerecorded instrumental tracks, HE PERFORMS TO HIS OWN PRERECORDED VOCALS. Is the whole rap scene on this level one big Milli Vanilli scam? Does every rapper on his level lip sync just like he was in a high school air guitar show? When XXX was knocked to the ground, his song and his vocals just kept playing. What a joke! Can someone tell me if this doesn't happen all the time? How could you have ignored this Jonah?

Shock jock Mikey Esparza finds way back to airwaves
If there is in fact friction between Rickards and Esparza, this could be a problem for Esparza. It would be a battle Esparza could not win. Someone who I spoke with who happens to know both men predicted: "This will not end well." He predicted that Mikey's "minions" will rally behind their long-banished, resurrected radio hero and will start mobilizing on social media to try force KFMB to let him talk more and let "Mikey be Mikey". (Even if Mikey himself does not motivate them to do so.) This could be very awkward for program director Mike Vasquez who says he wants Esparza to enhance and improve the KFMB-FM product, and not move in like crab grass and take it over (paraphrasing). Mr. Vasquez is long known as a adult contemporary or smooth jazz DJ. I think you have to admit, this is kind of a gutsy, risky, rock and roll move. If Mr. Vasquez is right, and fights conventional wisdom, he deserves some kind of award.

Thrift trader owner Jeff Clark hit by train in Little Italy
According to the Thrift Trader manager it was an Amtrak.

Thrift trader owner Jeff Clark hit by train in Little Italy
I was told the stores needed to be cleared out to avoid another month of rent. I assume the 15th.

Jeff and the Showgram gone from KYXY
This is true, but you'd think that someone who has been on the air for 29 years would be allowed to give a proper sign off. Keep in mind, they were working without a contract. That fact, plus the fact they were getting paid so much while underperforming in the ratings means they should have seen this coming, is what I have been told by people in the business.

Music publishers' police on duty
Um, Mr. anonymous dwbat, ASCAP charges bars and restaurants whatever it wants and if those bars and restaurants don't pay, those businesses get sued and lose. It's a wild wild west free for all with no supervision. Of course it's a good thing that songwriters get paid. But under that aura ASCAP and the rest have become a license to print money with no supervision. First there was ASCAP then BMI popped up. Then SESAC, then another one or two have also sprung up. And now that Ramona Mainstage (or any place) has paid one, it must now pay them all. SAG and AFTRA elect their leadership. Their industrywide contracts they form with studios et al are negotiated in public. ASCAP randomly selects its pay schedule and there is no one or no thing there to mediate or modify or try to make it just.
— July 6, 2017 10:28 a.m.
Music publishers' police on duty
Only problem is that paying ASCAP its fees has been described by one businessman as akin to buying a pinata in Tijuana. Its completely negotiable...as the attorney admitted above, they seek to find a reasonable settlement determined after negotiation. They also admitted they charge whatever fee they want. No one oversees ASCAP or BMI as they decide what, who and how much they want to collect, and these groups are protected by federal law to set their own collection rates. They act as a quasi government agency yet have no supervision.

Jeff and the Showgram gone from KYXY
I have been told that Randy Hoag actually left the show in January of this year not two years ago when Jerry Cesak left. Hoag was also forbidden to say goodbye on the air.

Jennie's Cafe in Oceanside closed — drug overdose
The San Diego County Coroner has finally released the cause of death....intoxication related to the following in her system: ethanol (drinking alcohol), morphine, fentanyl, butyryl fentanyl (hydrochloride), and methamphetamine

San Luis Rey Downs turns hotel over to renters
The County of San Diego code enforcement has starting looking into this. But what's noteworthy I think is that Supervisor Bill Horn's office never even bothered to return a call about this. They could have made up anything, really, if they wanted to blow it off. But press officer Anita Lightfoot never even bothered to call back.

How could you have ignored this Jonah?— July 27, 2017 4:56 p.m.
If Mr. Vasquez is right, and fights conventional wisdom, he deserves some kind of award.— July 25, 2017 6:17 p.m.
Thrift trader owner Jeff Clark hit by train in Little Italy
According to the Thrift Trader manager it was an Amtrak.— July 15, 2017 12:34 p.m.
Thrift trader owner Jeff Clark hit by train in Little Italy
I was told the stores needed to be cleared out to avoid another month of rent. I assume the 15th.— July 15, 2017 10:47 a.m.
Jeff and the Showgram gone from KYXY
This is true, but you'd think that someone who has been on the air for 29 years would be allowed to give a proper sign off. Keep in mind, they were working without a contract. That fact, plus the fact they were getting paid so much while underperforming in the ratings means they should have seen this coming, is what I have been told by people in the business.— July 6, 2017 12:32 p.m.
ASCAP randomly selects its pay schedule and there is no one or no thing there to mediate or modify or try to make it just.— July 6, 2017 10:28 a.m.
They act as a quasi government agency yet have no supervision.— July 5, 2017 10 p.m.
Jeff and the Showgram gone from KYXY
I have been told that Randy Hoag actually left the show in January of this year not two years ago when Jerry Cesak left. Hoag was also forbidden to say goodbye on the air.— July 3, 2017 11:41 a.m.
Jennie's Cafe in Oceanside closed — drug overdose
The San Diego County Coroner has finally released the cause of death....intoxication related to the following in her system: ethanol (drinking alcohol), morphine, fentanyl, butyryl fentanyl (hydrochloride), and methamphetamine— June 16, 2017 3:25 p.m.
San Luis Rey Downs turns hotel over to renters
The County of San Diego code enforcement has starting looking into this. But what's noteworthy I think is that Supervisor Bill Horn's office never even bothered to return a call about this. They could have made up anything, really, if they wanted to blow it off. But press officer Anita Lightfoot never even bothered to call back.— June 7, 2017 4:26 p.m.
