Downtown San Diego's Plaza Hotel goes; homeless parking proposed on Mission Bay
It's akin to some that run for school boards so they can market their services or products to other school districts. Local planning groups too. Oh, the list goes on. It seems everything is a networking op these days.

Zengzi: Confucius disciple who was an influential proponent of filial piety
These old texts are so interesting (multi-faceted and dense). My favorite are Lao Tzu's verses (my desert island read along with Alice in Wonderland and anything by Virginia Woolf). Many repackage these verses into "new age" wisdom (Eckhart Tolle straight-up ripped off Lao Tzu) and make a bundle. But really, what's the point when one can get the original for cheap or free?

Agreed. It's totally depressing how many things don't get covered well or at all because of that (or how many press releases get regurgitated and then re-regurgitated by other news outlets). One thing former SDR editor Rob taught me well is when covering anything, especially when it comes to movers and shakers, is to look at it with an arched eyebrow and follow the money. To be brutally honest about where the story goes isn't for the faint of heart. It pisses a lot of people off on all sides. Thank gawd Potter digs deep.

Downtown San Diego's Plaza Hotel goes; homeless parking proposed on Mission Bay
One SRO was turned into a parking lot for another SRO that was turned into a Boutique Hotel. True story. People were ousted from their homes so people from out of town could park when staying at the SRO that also ousted people. Genius! Ace would seem to benefit from fewer on-street parking spaces and no residential parking for new developments. Though, this makes rents higher by default. I visited downtown last weekend and there was no on-street parking to be found. The lot I parked in was practically empty. $15 for 0-2 hours of parking is just ridiculous. Old school stage coach robbery. But - what if more and more people actually do start using public transit? If it didn't take two hours by bus what it takes me 15 minutes by car, I'd be in. What if we start using our cars less or get rid of them and get behind public transit? What will the parking wars be like then between Ace and others of their ilk? Could it get like the old-school liquor licenses that the mob controlled?

Union-Tribune

The numbers the SDUT reports every October are skewed. They are akin to porch pirates in reverse as they deliver the paper to non-subscribers to pump up their numbers for advertisers. Not printing the paper locally was a bad move. They can't cover anything local that happens after 8 or 9 p.m. So much of their content is from non-local sources. In the August 16, 2018 U-T, about half the stories were sourced from the New York Times, Bloomberg News, the Washington Post, Associated Press, Reuters, L.A. Times, San Jose Mercury, and news services. Nearly 90 percent of outsourced stories were in Section A (front page), business, and sports sections.

It's sad that it does.

Downtown San Diego's Plaza Hotel goes; homeless parking proposed on Mission Bay
Exactly. It baffles me that the same people that cheer tax cuts for the wealthy condemn a livable wage for workers. Companies like McDonalds and Walmart depend on social welfare programs to pick up their slack (not paying their employees enough to meet basic needs). When a company tells their employees to make ends meet they will have to get a couple more jobs or apply for welfare, there's something rotten in Denmark.

Container homes shipping into Logan Heights
Maybe a silver lining for all the SROs they redeveloped the last few years? The loss of all those SROs seems to run parallel with seeing more people on the streets. The homeless lady (Shelly) I spoke with for this article, she said she wants something for $800 to $900 a month that is safe and clean. Too many of the SROs have bed bugs is what I'm told. Where I found her (where she had slept the night before) was in front of a business with a sign that said "no trespassing" and a warning she was on camera. That was an engraved invitation to Shelly. She told me she seeks out places that have cameras so if something happens to her, someone will know what happened to her. She said it's much rougher for females on the streets. I also talked to a kid that says he was no longer homeless but had been with his mom when he and his twin brother were younger. He said when they turned 13 they weren't allowed to stay in the shelter anymore with their mom. Some shelter rule. So they had to sleep on the streets with their mom.

Downtown San Diego's Plaza Hotel goes; homeless parking proposed on Mission Bay
It's akin to some that run for school boards so they can market their services or products to other school districts. Local planning groups too. Oh, the list goes on. It seems everything is a networking op these days.— March 22, 2019 11:31 a.m.

But really, what's the point when one can get the original for cheap or free?— March 22, 2019 11:27 a.m.

Thank gawd Potter digs deep.— March 22, 2019 11:18 a.m.

Could it get like the old-school liquor licenses that the mob controlled?— March 22, 2019 11:05 a.m.

Nearly 90 percent of outsourced stories were in Section A (front page), business, and sports sections. https://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2018/aug/31/s… .— March 22, 2019 10:37 a.m.

Exactly. It baffles me that the same people that cheer tax cuts for the wealthy condemn a livable wage for workers. Companies like McDonalds and Walmart depend on social welfare programs to pick up their slack (not paying their employees enough to meet basic needs). When a company tells their employees to make ends meet they will have to get a couple more jobs or apply for welfare, there's something rotten in Denmark.— March 20, 2019 9:52 a.m.

So they had to sleep on the streets with their mom.— March 14, 2019 3:54 p.m.
