Bone-dry Broadway Fountain will be wet again

That wasn't based on my opinion, that was the gist I got from talking to a lot of people. I sometimes have to paraphrase instead of quoting 20 people individually. The large homeless population has been there for decades. It was where a lot of locals first saw homeless people congregate openly. Today, there are few neighborhoods that don't have homeless people openly living. There have likely always been homeless people in San Diego. It's because there are so many in plain sight that there is now a task force. I doubt one size fits all when it comes to a solution. It's going to take a thousand moving pieces to come together. Without those that are homeless being involved in that solution, nothing will likely change in any significant way. We need to have compassion and we need to pay attention. Criminals use homeless people as a shield. They hide amongst them and mimic homeless behavior to fly under the radar. Not all those bags of recycling are filled with just recycling. Sometimes it's a cover for stolen goods or drug sales. I'm basing this on observations in my own neighborhood.

I think the idea still lingers in local's minds because Mayor Golding had the reputation for having cleaned up downtown. A lot of hotspots went in and people did feel safe walking around downtown where they hadn't before. In my experience, criminals thrive where homeless populations are high. They hide behind them in plain sight.

My mom said back on the 1950s, when she was a teenager, the bus let out right there. That's where her and her friends would go shopping. She always saw homeless men there. Right there is where the military picked up their uniforms, that's probably why the peep shows, etc.

It's the wrecking ball for Point Loma's Dolphin Motel

Yep, they rented by the hour. Mirrors on the ceiling too. Some famous locals used to frequent the place. There's a lot around San Diego that are remnants of a different time. The strip clubs in the Midway District are one.

The year in must-avoid movies

I disagree - it was a pretty good year for movies. There are always bad movies - making art is hard. Most mainstream comedy and action and horror flicks are absolute dreck. You have to go off the beaten path to find the good films sometimes. That's why I liked "The Big Sick" - it wasn't the same old formulaic romantic comedy. It was refreshing. "Get Out" is not my kind of film but it held me rapt because it has layers. "The Shape of Water" was wonderful however you slice it. Foreign films oftentimes blow American films out of the water - so good to check them out instead of the remakes. Those dragon tattoo films are so much better in their original foreign form. Another example - "Secret in their Eyes" - why see the Julia Roberts remake when the original Argentinian film is so much better. Sometimes you have to dip back into the past too. I just saw a film titled "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" from 2015. Surprisingly wonderful. One of my favorite films is a Scorsese film from the mid-1980s called "After Hours." Genius dark comedy. People usually love it or they hate it.

There is a lot more to this than meets the eye. I read through every page of the draft report and all the appendices - hundreds of pages. I'm all for being greener and keeping prices down, but I found a lot of things that need to be addressed before moving forward. The devil is in the details, as they say.
