Sweetwater school board questions funds for investigators
LaLucha: This is something that should be brought to the union's attention immediately. Brand's directive to get the district email on home computers first of all assumes everyone has a home computer and secondly, it sounds like a negotiable item since one's refusal to agree would more than likely bring reprimand. Don't collective bargaining rights protect members from having to sign these types of agreements on an individual basis?— September 26, 2013 9:34 a.m.
Southwestern College Foundation's Nathan Fletcher connection
Jim Mahler's criticism of Fletcher's "abysmal" voting record on educational issues was shared by Poway teachers the last time Fletcher ran for mayor. See related article: http://www.eastcountymagazine.org/node/7653— September 23, 2013 11:25 a.m.
Chula Vista parents protest switch to Common Core State Standards
landy: One of the corporations pushing Common Core is ExxonMobil. They have financed national televison ads promoting it. Yes, ExxonMobil, the same company that lied to the public about their oil spills and finally pleaded guilty to breaking several environmental laws and settled criminal and civil lawsuits of over 1 billion dollars, which was the most extensive attempt in human history to mitigate the environmental damage caused by an industrial disaster. So now we're supposed to get behind their vision of a business-modeled educational system? No thanks. The one core standard we should all get behind: *The Teaching Of Historical Facts.*— September 19, 2013 5:13 p.m.

Chula Vista school hurries to get ready for Arne Duncan
Does anyone know if Castle Park Middle's Saturday school actually offers students instruction by subject-specific-credentialed teachers? Some say these programs are nothing more than detention centers, and while they bring in the money, they really don't do much for the kids. I guess this district's going for the cash. Maybe the Reader should have Ms Luzzaro investigate and report on all of the district's after school programs. It might be an eye opener.— September 5, 2013 6:15 p.m.
Chula Vista school hurries to get ready for Arne Duncan
There's an interesting comment regarding Arne Duncan's bus tour on the official Department of Education Blog: **Sid S. Glassner says: August 20, 2013 at 10:57 AM-- I believe the Department of Education and all its public employees are accountable to the citizens they serve. Consequently, I would like to know two things: one, how much do these tours cost the citizens of our country and the second question is what good does this trip do and how do you know it? Thank you.** They're really the same questions many are asking here in Chula Vista, only on a larger scale. No answers yet.— September 5, 2013 10:43 a.m.
Sweetwater underwriters reel in the big one — a grand jury indictment
Jmbrickley: Apparently the "get-go" got going well before the "official" hiring of Gandara. Way before. How could anyone pull off a meeting like that on day one without a whole lot of insider pre-planning going on.— August 29, 2013 7:43 p.m.
Week in review: Sweetwater Union High School District
eastlaker wrote: ["And why should the public, the taxpayers want to hand anything over to Mayor Cox, as we haven't heard one thing from her on this subject. Get real."] I agree with eastlaker's take on replacing Ed Brand with mayor Cox. One can only guess that her (and others') silence on these matters is due to "political caution". This is why, as others have written, our next superintendent should not be a political player. Furthermore, when we stop treating school district superintendents like corporate CEO kings, the whole system will improve, in my opinion. Post the job with a salary equal to the highest paid teacher pro-rated for extra time spent on the job, take away all credit cards, free meals, cars, all perks, etc., and you just might get someone to apply that really wants the job of overseeing the education of our kids rather than pursuing their personal ambitions.— June 30, 2013 10:58 a.m.
Assemblymember Shirley Weber holds Budget Town Hall in Chula Vista
What's disconcerting is the thought of the present Sweetwater school board having discretionary power over spending more taxpayers' money.— June 11, 2013 5:36 p.m.
