Sweetwater district’s mellow ruse
anniej: Your question to candidate Mr. Martinez regarding public monies spent on charter schools is excellent and should be answered by *all* candidates. Furthermore, I think the voters should know which candidates, if any, will stand and vote for preserving our public school system with all of the protections guaranteed by the California Ed Code, instead of allowing schools to operate outside of the law.— August 13, 2014 6:20 p.m.
Whoa, Vergara
erupting: Superintendent Ed Brand's use of private investigators to intimidate critics of his administration as well as other vindictive actions he's taken to maintain "control" are prime examples supporting your point that teachers *need protection*. Sweetwater is the poster child for the necessity of protective laws like tenure for all employees. Just imagine where teachers like Ms Farias would be without it.— June 25, 2014 10:43 a.m.
Standardized tests shunned by South Bay parents
eastlaker: Excellent analysis! Would you consider running for the school board?— April 10, 2014 3:13 p.m.
Sweetwater district meeting marked by chaos
* "So, if you think of it in terms of marketing, if you think of it in terms of showing off your product, if you think in terms of celebrating, then I think that money is very well spent.” *- Superintendent Ed Brand Marketing? Products? While there certainly are business aspects to running a school district, to discuss students and their achievements as commodities to be marketed exposes the root of Sweetwater's problems. Brand sees himself as the CEO of a corporation rather than an educational leader. An uprooting is way overdue.— February 19, 2014 5:17 p.m.
Classroom shenanigans in Sweetwater school district?
During U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan's recent visit to Castle Park Middle School, he is quoted as saying : **** "Castle Park’s turnaround is just one more example that when adults raise expectations, children will rise to meet them," Duncan said. "You guys are setting a profound, profound model here. The whole country can learn, the national implications of what you’re doing are very significant.” **** So, why is Susan Mitchell and her side kick, principal Bleisch, pushing enrollment in the Stephen Hawking Charter School?— January 29, 2014 1:47 p.m.
Few details on Sweetwater district's student-data-sharing deal
Lembo seems to speak out of both sides of her mouth. Regarding recruitment for Alliant University, first she says students were called based on their grades, but then a couple paragraphs later says she doesn't think that those doing the calling were aware of grade point averages, and that they only had names and numbers. Huh? Does the CEO know what's going on in her organization or not? By the way, I wonder which students were targeted, high or low GPAs.— December 30, 2013 11:35 a.m.
Chula Vista school admin moves forward with Common Core Standards
At first Common Core Standards sounded good, but after becoming more informed I've changed my mind. Many friends and colleagues are also beginning to feel misled. Here's an informative article published in the Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/…— November 19, 2013 3:32 p.m.
Sweetwater Athletics Hall of Fame scrutinized
Who does this Mr. McLaughlin think he is? Doesn't he realize he works for me/us, the public? When a reporter asks a question, the public is asking the question. Evidently, to him, being asked logical, legitimate questions is a form of harassment. Well, to me, that means that he either has something to hide, or he simply has no business representing a public school district in any capacity, let alone as their chief compliance officer.— November 4, 2013 5:48 p.m.
Alliant University's San Diego campus could be sold
According to the linked article, Sweetwater's district spokesperson, Manny Rubio, said 20 Sweetwater students are presently being transported to this campus. Talk about being worried. What are those students thinking now, and where will this leave all of the other Alliant students should the campus be sold?— October 16, 2013 6:06 p.m.
SOS — Save Our Sealife — in Chula Vista
How is it that Chula Vista has plans to develop its bay front to the tune of millions of dollars, but its present main attraction, Living Coast Discovery Center, might be closing due to lack of funds? Something is really wrong here. It's sad to think that such a great educational and entertaining experience enjoyed by many, might be lost.— October 2, 2013 12:47 p.m.
