Educational turf war down south
No doubt the parents who have commented are very pleased with this charter school. It sounds like a very good school with super teachers and great classes. I don't believe that is being questioned by anyone. The issue raised is the legality of a classroom-based charter school existing beyond its authorizing school board's boundaries. In this case, the Julian school board is authorizing a charter school in Chula Vista. While the Springs charter schools' superintendent claims ORAA to be a non-classroom based school, from the parents' testimony, that doesn't seem to be the case. For those parents who are so dissatisfied with the public schools in Chula Vista, there are probably some fine private school alternatives, should their Academy be closed.— March 6, 2016 8:54 a.m.

There won't be a test and there will be a party

There won't be a test and there will be a party
I don't believe I've ever seen so many comments from afar in the Reader. This is obviously a hot issue nationwide. I also find it interesting that many administrators in the country are opposed to this testing. Can all of our local principals and higher ups be 100% for kids taking this test, or do they have a vested interest? Maybe they're just too afraid to speak out.— March 8, 2015 6:30 p.m.
Don't mess with Texas' labor pool

Don't mess with Texas' labor pool
On the subject of selecting a new superintendent, it might be a good time to examine the impact they have (or don’t have) on student achievement, and their value in regards to the return we get on their exorbitant salaries. The link below is to an article in NPREd, in which the author points out that studies show that principals and teachers are far more important to student learning than are these budget draining de facto CEO’s. For the price of one superintendent at the Sweetwater rate, we could hire four more entry level teachers. It just might be that searching for a better and less expensive way to release a “bad catch” as well as time spent on the search for another replacement, would be a good idea. Okay…we'll take Steve
I’ve followed educational issues in Sweetwater for some time. When I read this article, it brought back the questions that were raised about John McCann’s appointment of David Malcolm to the school district’s 7-11 committee. Connections, connections, connections.— January 20, 2015 7:19 p.m.

iPads are great for porn and video games
Chris_Shilling: I am in total agreement with your comments, and am especially delighted to know that you are still contributing beyond "campaign talk". The South Bay community is fortunate to have you in their ranks, and your continued involvement and expression of your opinions and ideas will greatly serve us all. Thank you.— November 6, 2014 6:38 p.m.

Does anyone recall any of the newly elected board members commenting on this iPad fiasco during their campaign? I'm hoping that with a new board we'll see new direction on this issue.— November 5, 2014 5:31 p.m.
