Sweetwater Union and Chula Vista Elementary districts to merge?
When I first heard of the merger idea, the potential of cutting administrative costs came to mind, but that was before I read that John McCann was for it. I'm not sure if Salas is sincere or just acting out a political strategy, but by now we should all have McCann's number.— January 31, 2014 10:35 a.m.
Picket at Sweetwater trustee Cartmill's home
In response to, and with all due respect to those who are criticizing the teachers' strategy to demonstrate in front of Mr. Cartmill's house, I have to agree with anniej who wrote, "desperate times, call for desperate measures". Before anyone casts judgement, they should keep in mind the following: Mr. Cartmill is Dr Brand's superior and therefore must take responsibility for his subordinate's actions. By his silence Mr Cartmill condones Brand's threatening those who exercise their right to speak out by contacting their employers and complaining that they are "misbehaving". By his silence, Mr. Cartmill condones sending private investigators to outspoken citizens' homes without warning. By his silence Mr Cartmill condones the superintendent's punishing district employees who criticize and conversely rewarding those who "go along". By his silence, Mr Cartmill condones allowing bargaining to reach a point where teachers are forced to drop their children and spouses from their health care insurance. By his silence, Mr Cartmill allows schools to be unsafe. Mr. Cartmill has consistently ignored the public's and the teachers union's requests for larger venues for school board meetings so that people wouldn't be forced to stand out in the cold facing armed guards hired to keep them out. Yes, these are desperate times, and since there is absolutely no communication going on at board meetings, or at the bargaining table, the teachers contacted Mr. Cartmill at his home where he can't hide behind the, "we're not allowed to respond to speakers during communications", rule at board meetings. From what I've heard and read, it was a peaceful demonstration by very frustrated people, who surely would've rather been doing something else. When you consider all that's transpired, the teachers' action pales in comparison to how they've been treated.— January 19, 2014 3:34 p.m.
No tough justice for former Southwestern College official
“It’s the largest public corruption case our office has ever prosecuted — systematic and pervasive.” Bonnnie Dumanis, May 11, 2012 Well, it just got larger.— January 9, 2014 10:51 a.m.
Homeless in Chula Vista
Has anyone on the City Council proposed anything to help these people? If homeless Chula Vistans can't sleep in empty buildings, as Eddie suggests, maybe the city could arrange something with the landlords to at least let them store their gear ( in most cases everything they own) while they seek employment, benefits, or any kind of help available without fear of having their possesions stolen. Maybe one of the organizations mentioned in the article could help with the storage problem. This was done in San Diego with locked containers. Kudos to the churches that distribute food, however much more help is needed. This isn't a one city problem, but Chula Vista could and should take the lead and provide an example of compassionate government. Something is really wrong in our city/society when a stray animal can receive more protective services than our fellow human beings.— January 7, 2014 5:06 p.m.
Few details on Sweetwater district's student-data-sharing deal
The reluctance to disclose the data sharing agreement, which would be the right and ethical thing to do, sure does raise suspicion. Could it be that the date it was signed doesn't jive with the time SBCS was calling to recruit for Alliant University? By the way, does anyone know how the Sweetwater District notifies parents regarding their right to opt out of sharing their kids' data? The law says it should be very clear and accessible. Regarding the emails that Lembo says are slanderous, I'm wondering when she's going to file that lawsuit against the district, or if she really meant what she said.— December 29, 2013 5:37 p.m.
Sweetwater school district invites more suspicion
Sjtorres: To your comment about political involvement I would add business dealings that pose possible conflicts of interest as well. In fact, the California Political Reform Act requires certain government officials (including 7-11 committees) to disclose their personal financial interests. That's what 700 Forms are all about. However, according to this article (as of December 20) "The district is still in the process of collecting the Form 700's for the 7-11 committee members…." Without disclosure to help inform the public about potential conflicts of interest, the actions of this committee dealing with our property, should be nullified, and maybe the committee itself disbanded. I guess according to David Malcolm, it is anyway.— December 21, 2013 2:25 p.m.
Sweetwater trustee Arlie Ricasa to resign
Apparently Ricasa's votes were for sale which raises the question of just *how many* votes might have been bought, and by whom. Since 3-2 votes are pretty common with this board, shouldn't all action taken by this board that were determined by a one vote margin be reconsidered? Arlie Ricasa should not be allowed to hold public office ever again. I wonder if a civil lawsuit can be filed.— December 18, 2013 6:23 p.m.
Former South Bay schools officials have day in court
Following the trials or pleas, is there any chance of a civil case being brought against the convicted?— December 11, 2013 6:40 p.m.
Sweetwater district spent big for Arne Duncan visit
Add to the list of lips-moving = lying, district spokesperson, Manny Rubio. Pathetic.— December 3, 2013 7 p.m.
Sweetwater teachers may strike over district policies
This isn't the first time the district has ignored or denied requests for a larger venue for board meetings at which larger than capacity crowds were anticipated. Can this be challenged as a violation of the brown act?— November 25, 2013 2:24 p.m.
