Sweetwater Union HS District Rescinds 19 Layoffs, but at What Cost?
These hearings are a waste of taxpayers' money. There is plenty of fat in this district's administration as well as a lot of money wasted on consultants, technological whims, and charter school adventures.— April 30, 2012 9:52 p.m.
Appointment Trend Continues In Chula Vista Elementary
This is pretty hard to believe. Seems like a lot of back scratching's been going on in this district. I'm surprised no one has officially questioned it. Maybe with all the attention Sweetwater Union High School District's been getting, the elementary district's been allowed to fly under the radar. Just what we don't need, more political shenanigans in the south bay!— April 25, 2012 4:22 p.m.
Sweetwater Boardmember John McCann Calls Cops on Recall Activist
So, did the police actual arrive at the scene of this incident?— April 18, 2012 10 p.m.
Sweetwater Boardmember John McCann Calls Cops on Recall Activist
You know, the people who go to all of these board meetings, who study the agenda, who prepare comments, who sit for hours in uncomfortable chairs until they get their two or three minutes to speak, don't deserve the type of vindictiveness displayed by Mr. McCann. At a time when most people are home at the dinner table or relaxing in one way or another, these "antagonists", as some like to call them, are working for change. They really deserve an award for the good service they do on behalf of the community.— April 18, 2012 8:57 p.m.
Recall Committee Activists Ape Sweetwater Union HS District Board
The school board's job is to represent the public's interest. We elect them to do that. They will make decisions that not all of us like, but we should at least be given reasonable explanations for why they voted one way or the other. For example, I'd like them to explain how uncontrolled gifts and campaign donations are in the best interest of the public, and why they support it? Their reaction to the public's suggestion to consider limiting gifts and donations was silence. Their response to their independent auditor's recommendation to consider changing their gifts/donation policy was the same " fingers in the ears, la la la la" routine. It looks like recalling them is the only solution to this mess.— April 17, 2012 9:25 p.m.
Is Sweetwater Climbing Out of the Muck and Mire?
To restrict and/or ban gifts and donations to board members and staff is what the public wants. As the article reports, the idea was brought to the board by Ms Stubbs last year and again Monday evening by Ms Brinkman. In each case, the board chose to ignore them. Now we learn that a part of the independent, taxpayer funded, Prop O audit, has also recommended this reform be considered. Unfortunately, this board's contempt for the public is so great that they don't even feel the need to discuss it. I will give Ms Lopez credit for proposing what she did, but much more is needed. How ironic by the way, that this board is handing out 'Rules of Conduct' to be followed by the public.— April 12, 2012 3:33 p.m.
Oversight Board Meets to Disband Chula Vista’s Redevelopment Agency
Mr. and Mrs. Cox were allowed to handpick the majority of this supposedly public-serving board. While it's probably legal, it certainly should raise the public's eyebrow. It sure does mine. Such a concentration of power in one household is not exactly my idea of democracy.— April 10, 2012 5:45 p.m.
Chula Vista Considers West-Side Apartment Complex
This project will be a parking nightmare, not just for the residents, but for the people living on the side streets around it that are already impacted by too many cars. Just drive around the west side and you'll see residential streets lined with cars on both sides. On 'H' Street, where this project is being proposed, parking is prohibited, leaving no choice but to park on the side streets. This project needs to go back to the drawing board, and regardless of what the city will allow, change its design to include more parking spaces. Mr. O'Neill's solution to this huge problem is for us to wean ourselves from our cars. Maybe in a city with a good public transportation system this would work, but not in Chula Vista. I'd like him to explain how he gets around town.— April 4, 2012 3:57 p.m.
New Southwestern Affidavits Released
anniej: I agree with you. That money they were throwing around was ours. These companies budgeted for those gifts when they calculated their bottom lines. If convicted, their fines for their crimes should be earmarked for repayment to the taxpayers for all of the money they stole.— March 31, 2012 12:49 p.m.
New Southwestern Affidavits Released
Wasn't this email written at the time when the Southwestern campus was in turmoil over class cuts, free speech rights, etc.? Dr. Raj Chopra, president of the college was taking a lot of heat from the faculty, students, and public, and deservedly so. At this same time, board member Dominguez, instead of supporting or at least showing interest in the public's legitimate demands, chose to "support" Chopra and his wrong doings (I believe he even fell asleep at one board meeting when concerns were being voiced). So now we know why he opposed the public he supposedly represented; it was in exchange for contracts for his pals and to please his Sweetwater boss, Sandoval.— March 31, 2012 9:52 a.m.
