Sweetwater school district board seeks to silence opposition
anniej: Your comment about Brand bursting a blood vessel because Quinones was going against his wishes reminded of something I read (pretty sure in the Reader) that said Brand would walk away from the job if he didn't have unanimous support of the board. Well, what's he waiting for?— March 22, 2013 9:55 p.m.
Before the DA's investigation of Sweetwater school district...
I agree with mko. If I were called before a grand jury, I would definitely seek answers to questions regarding the process. I would also expect the process to be explained to me by those who called me to testify. However, if I decided to ask an attorney to explain the process, I would expect to pay their fees. Also, it seems highly improper for your employer, who might be indicted based on your testimony, to pay for your legal assistance.— March 20, 2013 7:37 p.m.
Sweetwater school district board seeks to silence opposition
Out of all the Sweetwater stories that Ms Luzzaro has reported on, this perhaps is the most important and troubling as it exposes a major root of the problem, and it's pretty rotten. Kudos to all those who have spoken out, and stand up to Brand's intimidation. If one person is allowed to be silenced, then we are all victims of Brands intimidation. Anniej: I agree, we can count on the Reader. Forget the UT. oneoftheteachers: It must be so hard to work in this district. To have your professional opinions silenced by threats of discipline is absolutely unacceptable. The public owes those teachers who do speak out, either individually or through their union reps, a great deal of gratitude. They are on the front lines working with our sons and daughters everyday. They know the best practices for educating our kids, as they have for decades. To be threatened with disciplinary action for voicing a professional opinion goes against all of the principles of our democratic educational system. It is disgraceful and should be illegal.— March 16, 2013 10:31 a.m.
Sweetwater school district cuts program and teachers
Once again there's not enough room to seat the anticipated large crowd. Again, they let the public know what they think of them. By the way, does anyone know how the property purchase vote went in their secret session? Aren't they supposed to tell us what they did or didn't do, and if a vote was taken, who voted which way?— March 14, 2013 8:34 a.m.
Sweetwater Union High School District & Realty Co.
cvres: Improbable, no. It sounds like something Brand would do. I think you're right about the Union Tribune. There might even be a Reader article about that. This merits an investigation. I'm no lawyer, but this sure seems illegal. Doesn't the Brown Act protect a person's right to free speech? The US constitution? If the school board doesn't question this, then they are all guilty and liable. I hope this person seeks legal advice. If this is allowed to happen to one person, then we are all victimized.— March 8, 2013 12:39 p.m.
First sentencing in South Bay corruption scandal
From the article: [Dumanis told the public that "this is the largest public corruption case our office has ever prosecuted." She also asserted that the corruption uncovered in the two South Bay districts, Sweetwater Union High School District and Southwestern College, was "systemic and pervasive."] I guess white collar crime pays pretty well considering the consequences.— March 2, 2013 7:43 a.m.
Southwestern faculty questions college’s education plan
What is it with these disticts hiring consultants instead of using the administrators we ALREADY pay for? $400,000+ for bad data? Give me a break!— February 26, 2013 7:50 p.m.
Southwestern College may trim faculty to reduce costs
It sounds like there's at least one board member asking questions. Are the rest in Nish's pocket?— February 22, 2013 9:32 a.m.
Sweetwater school board to address campaign spending limits
anniej: Was the proposed resolution moved, seconded? Did anyone on the board besides McCann speak to the issue? The district's website audio isn't up yet. Very disappointing news. When are the next elections?— February 20, 2013 5:40 p.m.
Sweetwater school board to address campaign spending limits
Ms Adato and all those who have unselfishly sacrificed precious time and energy standing up to this school board are owed a great deal of thanks from the community. Thank you, all.— February 19, 2013 9:40 a.m.
