Chula Vista from boom to bust to boom
While all quality of life issues are important, shouldn't response time for life saving services be given attention before traffic workshops? Sjtorres: What do you mean by ".. all these new apartments will flatten out the trajectory of a successful boom for Chula Vista.."— October 1, 2013 9:18 a.m.
Southwestern College Foundation's Nathan Fletcher connection
You would think after all the controversy, indictments, and pending court cases, that the new leaders (who promised openness and transparency) would have done much better than this. The excuse that Fletcher wasn't a candidate at the time he was chosen to speak at the gala, seems weak. Wasn't the appearance of impropriety discussed after they realized Fletcher was a mayoral candidate? That this might be an issue must have dawned on them, or maybe Mr. Peraza was too busy with his new job as Lorena Gonzalez's chief of staff? It's not like Nathan Fletcher is the only decorated veteran in town. This all seems a little fishy.— September 23, 2013 3:40 p.m.
Chula Vista school hurries to get ready for Arne Duncan
Just because Mr. Alt says the expenditures were legal doesn't justify wasting our precious tax dollars on this dog and pony show. Painted windows, red flags, college posters, etc. give this school the appearance of "something's for sale here, come on down!". By the way, shouldn't the superintendent be required to respond to our elected board member, Bertha Lopez? Also, if, as someone earlier suggested, Mr. Cartmill is being advised to keep his mouth shut since he is under indictment, then he should step down or ask for a leave of absence until after his trial. Ms Lopez has also been indicted, but continues to speak up and represent us.— September 4, 2013 5:14 p.m.
National City a long way from Scripps Ranch
So, Brand tells the commissioners that they would be causing hardship to students wishing to attend Alliant by not calling an emergency meeting. Well, it sounds to me that Alliant wasn't so concerned about their students when they put their Scripps Ranch campus up for sale two years ago! Oh yeah, it's all about the kids.— August 22, 2013 11:37 a.m.
National City a long way from Scripps Ranch
Souhtwestern Community College trustee Humberto Peraza's quote in another Reader article perhaps says it all: “No public institution should use taxpayer money to push students to a private university that charges the outrageous sum of $620 a unit when they have a better economical and educational alternative with Southwestern at $46 a unit —and SDSU and UCSD sitting next door."— August 22, 2013 8:41 a.m.
National City Planning Commission prodded to decide on making space for Alliant Int'l University
The nerve of Ms Reynoso to be telling the Planning Commision what their job is. Based on what I've read about their last meeting, it sounds like they know exactly what their job is and acted to protect the public they represent. Let's hope the commissioners don't allow themselves to be bullied. By the way, everyone should read the Don Bauder link. Pretty shady outfit. Is Ms Reynoso still a trustee of United States University?— August 16, 2013 10:25 a.m.
Alliant University leaves Sweetwater school district property in National City…sets up at Southwestern College?
To add to anniej's list of issues: There are the Sweetwater's buses that have received unsatisfactory safety compliance ratings after being inspected by the California Highway Patrol, and a district that lacks a campaign contribution policy which has been open for discussion for some time now, but has been stalled and gone nowhere. The list goes on.— August 13, 2013 8:07 p.m.
Alliant University leaves Sweetwater school district property in National City…sets up at Southwestern College?
Kudos to Southwestern trustee Humberto Peraza! Hopefully other elected officials will follow his lead.— August 11, 2013 7:36 a.m.
Sweetwater superintendent Ed Brand’s Alliant project hits snag
From the article: [Lembo also said, “We only called houses where children who were 12th- or 11th-graders lived.”] How did Ms Lembo's organization get these phone numbers? Should schools be handing out this information? Can these numbers be sold or freely given to other interested groups, all of course in the name of helping kids? Young folks are vulnerable and must be protected. This is from 2002. I wonder what the rules are today, and if they followed them. A. Under FERPA, an LEA must provide notice to parents of the types of student information that it releases publicly. This type of student information, commonly referred to as "directory information," includes such items as names, addresses, and telephone numbers and is information generally not considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed. The notice must include an explanation of a parent's right to request that the information not be disclosed without prior written consent. Additionally, § 9528 requires that parents be notified that the school routinely discloses names, addresses, and telephone numbers to military recruiters upon request, subject to a parent's request not to disclose such information without written consent. A single notice provided through a mailing, student handbook, or other method that is reasonably calculated to inform parents of the above information is sufficient to satisfy the parental notification requirements of both FERPA and § 9528. The notification must advise the parent of how to opt out of the public, nonconsensual disclosure of directory information and the method and timeline within which to do so.— August 6, 2013 7:57 p.m.
Did Manuel Paul illegally burn San Ysidro School District papers?
Of course Mr. Paul is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and he says he will return his severance pay if he is found guilty. I'm wondering if his promise includes making a deal that falls short of a conviction?— August 5, 2013 11:08 a.m.
