Folk Arts Rare Records
"Thirteen days left of Folk Arts Rare Records under my ownership at 2881 Adams Ave. in San Diego," says soon-to-be-former owner Lou Curtiss. "We close Monday June 30th. The new owner Brendan Boyle will reopen September first in a new location in North Park."

Scott Marks, Annotated:
Invasion of the Star Creatures
Night Flight was where I first saw stuff like the animated obscurities Fantastic Planet, Rock & Rule, and Allegro Non Tropo (basically the European Fantasia), not to mention Firesign Theatre's J-Men Forever (redubbed movie serials) and a ton of music videos and bands that otherwise might never have been seen on TV. I have over 150 hours of Night Flight recorded on beta tapes that I haven't been able to play in almost 20 years, tho I'm thinking about seeking an old beta machine and duping them to DVDs - I corresponded with Night Flight producers several years back, and they said that rights issues to all the varied material are preventing official DVD releases. They admitted that even the original screenings often happened minus proper rights clearances, and that they don't even have copies of all of their programs. Particularly rare is a one-time screening of music videos that Night Flight made from footage from Rock & Rule without seeking permission from either filmmakers or the bands whose songs were used for the videos. When a deluxe Rock & Rule DVD came out some years back, producers really wanted to include the Night Flight videos, but NF claimed no master copy existed, with the vids supposedly being destroyed after the one airing in response to lawsuit threats from the Rock & Rule production company Nelvana. So my beta copy of that episode may be the only copy in existence...

Gregg Allman, Earl Thomas & Rhumboogies -- 05/18/14 at Humphreys by the Bay
Note the local-centric opening acts on this bill, including a reunion of local '80s blues staples Earl Thomas & Rhumboogies and former San Diegan Brigitte DeMeyer, currently living in Nashville and with a brand new album called *Savannah Road.*

Che Café
UCSD's University Centers Advisory Board is holding a vote Tuesday, May 13 to cut the Ché Café from their budget. If passed, the University will effectively close the venue for an undetermined time period until funds can be allocated to carry out, what the University deems as, critical renovations. The Ché Café was established on UCSD's campus in 1980 and has been a staple to San Diego's music scene since its conception. The venue has hosted a number of notable internationally touring acts such as Billy Corgan, Green Day, Jimmy Eat World, Rise Against and many more. The venue also opens its doors to the community for fundraisers, art shows, theatrical acts and other events, many of which are hosted for UCSD clubs and organizations.

R.I.P., Larry "Wild Man" Fischer, Frank Zappa's Discovery
The unreleased footage referenced in this article from a 1995 video shot in San Diego featuring Fischer and his favorite band the Rugburns ("Hitchhiker Joe," etc) has turned up on YouTube. Fischer was offered the chance to appear in the Rugburns promotional video by Bob Duffy, a friend of the band that Wildman met at the local record store Garage Rock. The video project was being cooked up for the band's major label debut on Priority Records, *Taking The World By Donkey*. The longform promo was shot in various locations around San Diego, interspersed with live clips and interview sound bites with the group, but it's Fischer's running narrative which propels the oddball project.

Anime Conji 2014
42 comments on the comedic captions in this cosplay photo gallery, including hate-filled cosplay commentators resorting to name-calling (“ignorant,” “idiot,” “amateur,” “juvenile,” etc), accusations (“intolerance,” racist,” “harming the cosplay community”), a call for me to “go ahead and die,” and a threat that “You need to be punched in the face for that comment.” Since not a single one of my comedic captions is as hateful or mean-spirited as most of the comments posted by these (alleged) cosplay aficionados, the hypocrisy on display in this thread is astounding and troubling. The cosplay complainants have an unreasonable and bully-ish agenda - "only say things about us that we like, or we'll insult and threaten you." As I mentioned in a private email about this matter, I’m saddened by the terrible way these commentators are (mis)representing their otherwise admirable and talented peer group of cosplayers.

Anime Conji 2014
RE all the Facebook commentators seen above complaining about the comedic photo captions - you're clearly arriving at the Anime Conji Gallery with an unreasonable attitude and agenda if you can cast such MOR photo caps as mean or unfair. I actually write the caps very stream-of-consciousness as I look at reduced thumbnails, rather than opening the whole photo in large format, so I didn't even realize Red Riding Hood was black! I was sure she was Asian, and Red Riding Hood/Red's in the Hood is a natural thematic and linguistic progression from pic to cap, a funny one at that, so shame on fools who'd assume racist intent. And for commentators to accuse ME of not researching or knowing enough about COMICS for my upcoming Comic-Con photo report (for my ninth consecutive year - it's a very popular feature!) is hysterical, given the COMMENTATORs' lack of research - like simply Googling "Jay Allen Sanford" to see I'm one of the most successful indie comic book publishers in the history of the field, with hundreds of credits as a comic creator as well. I assure no offense was intended, and I remain baffled that anyone would TAKE offense at ANY of these captions - all I can do from this point is promise more of the same for Comic-Con 2014!

JIM McINNES: THE LAST DJ
"As of May 31, 2014, I will no longer be heard on San Diego's 100.7 JACK FM," McInnes announced today. "It's been a fun 6 1/2 years and I shall miss you all!"— May 31, 2014 9:23 p.m.
Scott Marks, Annotated: Invasion of the Star Creatures
So my beta copy of that episode may be the only copy in existence...— May 27, 2014 1:56 p.m.
Gregg Allman, Earl Thomas & Rhumboogies -- 05/18/14 at Humphreys by the Bay
Note the local-centric opening acts on this bill, including a reunion of local '80s blues staples Earl Thomas & Rhumboogies and former San Diegan Brigitte DeMeyer, currently living in Nashville and with a brand new album called *Savannah Road.*— May 15, 2014 12:21 a.m.
The venue also opens its doors to the community for fundraisers, art shows, theatrical acts and other events, many of which are hosted for UCSD clubs and organizations.— May 12, 2014 4:12 p.m.
The longform promo was shot in various locations around San Diego, interspersed with live clips and interview sound bites with the group, but it's Fischer's running narrative which propels the oddball project. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBaQZd3lSWU— April 30, 2014 3:42 a.m.
The cosplay complainants have an unreasonable and bully-ish agenda - "only say things about us that we like, or we'll insult and threaten you." As I mentioned in a private email about this matter, I’m saddened by the terrible way these commentators are (mis)representing their otherwise admirable and talented peer group of cosplayers.— April 27, 2014 9:57 p.m.
I assure no offense was intended, and I remain baffled that anyone would TAKE offense at ANY of these captions - all I can do from this point is promise more of the same for Comic-Con 2014!— April 26, 2014 12:20 a.m.
