Local money men Robert Snigaroff, Neil Hokanson, Ross Starr bearish on future
Ouch...that's the sound of my head and portfolio after reading Don's article. What is one to do? In the words of the Godfather III Don: Just when I think I can get out they drag me back in (Paraphrase).— August 31, 2016 8:10 a.m.
California imposes no-chew law for big leagues
Generosity of spirit does exist when behavior and circumstances warrant it. If an adult wishes to engage in risky behavior, fine. Example: Riding a motorcycle without a helmet. For an adult to engage in this behavior might be his or her choice, but PUBLIC money should not be spent to care for the resultant mental vegetables. I have been in those wards. Let the practitioner of this behavior find their own insurance risk pool to cover said behavior. What were the costs of Tony Gwynn's medical procedures and what effects did these costs have on the premiums of others in his risk pool? Yes, Virginia, insurance risk pools are a form of SOCIALISM. Let the hypocritical libertarians rail about government intrusion...so...why couldn't pre-school educators be allowed to chew and expectorate in the classroom? The tragedy was that Gwynn was an addict who never faced down his behavior. And yeah, there is always a Doctor who will Say for Pay. In this case the public good is served by banning risky behavior when getting recompensed for a public activity. spit, splat, wipe.— October 15, 2015 10:38 a.m.
California imposes no-chew law for big leagues
Hey guys...in the words of Putney Swope, (Cinematic Advertising Man): "Beer is pee pee dickie!". Same goes true for the billions spent on smoking tobacco. Chewing is pathetic...If you are an ADULT and want to chew and spit into the spittoon before sex with your wife (Hopefully also a chewer), have at it. Ya' celebrate baseball and yet don't think having man-childs chew, spit and massage the crotch has any effect on youngsters. The crotch stuff has a direct effect on rates of self abuse (The statistics are somewhere around here). In any event: SCREW TONY GUINN! He chose to knowingly engage in cancer producing behavior so not one iota of caring from here. But his effect on young kids is immeasurable...I had a nephew who idolized him...and yes he started chewing. Sarkisian just got fired for being a drunk in public...and the poor man-childs can't chew in public? Sob. Here's the real test: Go ahead and engage in this risky behavior when you are an adult and not representing the national pastime...but when the cancer hits refuse all insurance for treatment, especially public funds (medicare is Socialism!) cause you did what you wanted. Hock--Spit--and jump into the grave.— October 14, 2015 5:51 p.m.
Missing from the Barry Minkow movie
Don, why is it that San Diego County seems to attract so many grifters? The truly troubling thing is that they find so many gullible people. Could it be that the continuing drivel from the "Mainstream" (Pun intended) news providers casts a dumbing fog, a June gloom of the reasoning portion of the brain. Ah, well, I guess many want to emulate the Spanos' perfidy. Thanks for your continuing well targeted investigations. Cheers— February 26, 2015 9:48 a.m.
Poll: San Diegans don't want to subsidize stadium
Don: It never ceases to amaze me how malleable the citizens of San Diego are. A football team is treated by the UT as a near mystical entity, possibly more Holy than you know who. As someone who experienced living in San Diego for stints in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and finally leaving permanently in 2004, I now breath daily a clean air not infused with Spanos & Manchester petards. I think the yearly increase of recent college graduates moving to San Diego, thus providing profit for landlords, has created a Lotusland of false hopes and dreams. There is a sense of unreality to habitation there. The "Aren't we special" mantra of the real estate and wealthy crowd is really stale. Try visiting South East San Diego and experience a taste of the working poor. Let the Chargers play on the deck of that old aircraft carrier on the bay.— September 3, 2014 10:38 a.m.
Millions for football in San Diego, zilch for opera
Don: Having lived in San Diego and experienced neighborhoods from Golden Hill to La Jolla I must say that I truly don't get it. Supposedly San Diego is populated by highly educated folk, from Qualcomm to UCSD: But what is their influence? During the James Copley era there were more registered democrats than republicans in San Diego County, but the right always won. During the tenure of the Mafia Don-like Spanos organization a gas bag of a municipal system has rewarded the rich (As always). Yet, no organized force has consistently stood for openness and fairness in the financial affairs of government. (Does the old Naval Training Center give away ring a bell?). It appears that every functioning brain gets addled by the sun and sea...the brain cells never get exercised when it comes to local citizen involvement. (Don, you moved to Colorado for the fresh air, didn't you?). So it is not surprising that locals don't support the arts. Skulls full of flatulent platitudes to the rich do not make for much of a city. San Diego City civics are a joke, led by rich old bastards that connive to keep the games going. If the fat lady quits singing the only sound left will be the pumping of noxious fumes by the "Leaders" into the balloon of their creation. Like Sisyphus it will soon get too high...well you know the rest. Enjoy the sun.— April 23, 2014 10:52 a.m.
San Diego Gas & Electric rates are nation's highest
Why no mention of solar energy? San Diego is a perfect location for massive retrofitting to provide real competition to the utilities stranglehold. Not massive projects that benefit the few but individual house/apartment buildings with solar panels. Sheesh...what's it take San Diego?— April 24, 2013 9:32 a.m.
On January 1 Tourmaline becomes state marine reserve
Goodness Gracious...which way is East? Oh Golly Golly I don't know where to paddle...maybe you should stick to a kiddie pool on your lawn! Humans have fished the seas to near extinction: I've lived in La Jolla in the 1950's and abalone were plentiful...they're scarce due to overfishing. I've lived in Downeast Maine where grandparents fished the Grand Banks in schooners for Cod....they're gone due to overfishing. Does Doc Ricketts ring a bell. Giant Bluefin Tuna are almost totally gone and everyone claims innocence. A company is San Diego was selling sonar buoys to lace the ENTIRE Pacific Tuna habitat so that tuna schools could be tracked by satellite link up. Perhaps the spoiled paddleboarder should stick to finding his car with his gps and keys. Suggestion...head east for 500 miles and stay there!!— October 5, 2011 5:03 p.m.
The Federal Reserve's Money Orgy
Hey Don: A good friend did an expose for CBS New York in the 70's about the Federal Reserve. For telling the truth about this cosa nostra he was fired. Moral: The rich get richer and we tax paying suckers keep on paying. San Diego City Government is as corrupt as they come but San Diegans truly are the most passive bunch of sheep I've ever encountered. Bet 2 of them actually read your article. Cheers.— April 27, 2011 6:24 p.m.
Jerry Brown Wants to Rein in Redevelopment Scams
Don: Pigs at the trough. As an ex-resident of Golden Hill and current resident of Beaverton, OR I can testify that it is the same dynamic everywhere. I lived through the CCDC redevelopment of downtown...a complete giveaway to developers. Escondido can't vote on a public giveaway for the Beavers (Soon to be Friars?) baseball stadium. Not enough time say the rulers. CCDC works in the dark and sucks up the money and Mayor Sanders fiddles as the urban redevelopers drain the coffers. Wake up people...San Diego citizens get what they deserve. Maybe it is the effect of a large military-industrial presence: Do what we order! No questions! NO VOTES. DUH! Enjoy your sunshine, sunshine.— January 26, 2011 10:05 a.m.
