Mission Beach off season
For me, Mission Beach was always a magical place. I lived in Lakeside for years, as the rent was more affordable. But I spent every free moment I had in Mission Beach, jogging, biking, walking along the "boardwalk", which is actually a 2.5 mile long concrete sidewalk from PB to MB. I would go past the millionaire's beachfront homes and think they were the luckiest people in the world, being able to wake up to the Pacific every morning. I still miss San Diego, but I don't think I'll ever go back.— February 2, 2019 10:39 a.m.

I shopped at People's when I lived in OB. Some of the best produce, second only to the Farmer's Market Wednesday evening on Newport Ave. They also had a great deli section, which used to sell breaded soy cutlets. DEELISHUS!!!! There was always a cool vibe in the Co-Op. But I liked the older incarnation of the store, rather than the more modern plate glass facade that I saw last time I visited. People's was one of the reasons I still love and miss OB to this day. That and The Black. It's nice to know some things haven't changed.— August 5, 2018 12:15 p.m.
Paramedics can make more money bagging groceries
I worked as an EMT for 7 years while I worked on my RN degree from 1988-1995 for Hartson Ambulance, before it was acquired by AMR. Trust me, the only people getting paid a decent wage are the fat cats in the head office. It was a fun job at times. In fact, for the most part, I loved it. But they did work the crews like dogs. However, most crews were idealistic, and the EMTs I worked with all dreamed of being firefighter/paramedics, which is the only way to make a decent living wage in EMS. I went in the other direction and became an RN. Being a provider in the medical field is a completely thankless job. The only thing one gets out of it is what they put in. I can tell you the vast majority of calls we ran were non-emergency calls, such as hospital transfers, and bogus 911 calls from street people who were trying to scam drug prescriptions from hospital ERs, and scoring a gurney and a meal for the day. Or they used ambulances as free taxi services to get from neighborhood to the next. I don't mean to make it sound like all the calls were of this nature. But the 911 EMS system, and the Medicaid benefit are abused on a daily basis around the country, which is just a couple of reasons the system is so messed up. I could go on for hours documenting some of the nonsense I had to put up with, but the bottom line for me is, if you choose to do this job, find a way to make it work, or quit and go something else.— April 10, 2018 1:43 p.m.
Ocean Beach — seven blocks surrounded by reality
I lived on Niagara Ave across from the RiteAid for 5 years before fleeing California for Las Vegas in 2001. I *LOVED* OB. I never wanted to leave. When I moved there in '96, rent was fairly reasonable--$525.00/month for a 1 bedroom apartment. Then in 2000, rents began to climb astronomically and a lot of people were forced to move, including me. But I loved the OB vibe and all the local shops. I definitely felt like I was part of a community. In Vegas, I'm just a face in the crowd. Looks like there has been some changes in OB--new shops, bars, and the like. But I'm happy the place has not changed too much. That's what's great about the place. No matter what kind of day I had at work. My place in OB was my sanctuary.— September 21, 2017 9:45 a.m.
Slain officer's vigil includes policing critique
Well said. I'm sure gang bangers would love it if the police simply pulled up stakes and let the animals run wild. The actual law abiding citizen's who live in these neighborhoods would have a problem, however, since they are usually the victims of gang violence and intimidation.— August 4, 2016 7:18 a.m.
"Black Lives Matter is under attack"
Protesting is one thing--marching, chanting, candle light vigils. It's all good, regardless of the cause. Closing down freeways, endangering lives, preventing emergency vehicles like fire trucks and ambulances, preventing the safe flow of traffic is criminal and must be dealt with by imposing criminal penalties, instead of locking some people up for a few hours, and then letting them go. Bad police should be held accountable, and should be punished. But there is a more constructive way to get these things done. And by the way, All Lives Matter. If anyone thinks that statement is divisive, then get some therapy.— July 21, 2016 8:49 a.m.
Aggressive transients put Ocean Beach on edge
This is what happens when liberals run the show. Keep up the good work. Lawless societies have always worked well.— July 7, 2016 7:26 a.m.
Rent control protest in O.B.
I lived in OB for 5 years. I never wanted to leave. But the rents went up so high I had to move. When I moved to the beach in '96, my 1 bedroom apartment rented for $525.00/month, which was reasonable. I was a working RN, so I could afford the rent. AND the rent stayed the same for about 3 years. As the market changed, the rent started creeping up, with increases about every 3-4 months. However, when maintenance needed doing(termite control, plumbing repairs, etc) the apt owner was no where to be found. My cozy little apartment turned into a hovel and I decided enough was enough. I moved to Nevada and I've never looked back. I love San Diego. I always will. But I don't think I'll ever go back.— June 9, 2016 9:21 a.m.
¡Rape Trump!
The mural that reads 1,000,000,000 Acres Stolen tells the real motivation here--to retake the US Southwest. This has been the goal of La Raza and Meccha(?) for decades, which would help to explain the endless invasion of our country. Don't get me wrong. I like Mexican people, too. I grew up in San Diego County. In fact, for the first two years, I lived with my relocated Minnesota family in Chula Vista, less than 10 miles from the US/Mexican border. I understand that Mexicans want a better life in the USA. But pro immigration activists are quick to point out America's sins, while conveniently ignoring the carnage going on south of the border--the drug cartels, government and police corruption, the imprisonment of Central and South American people who often cross illegally into Mexico, trying to get the same better life that Mexicans are trying to get. Don't see too many protestors in Mexico City, Guadalajara, or Tijuana, protesting against the atrocities being perpetrated by the state against their own people. Instead, they blame the US. We're sick of it being a one way street.— November 8, 2015 6:47 p.m.
Fifty years of Poma’s in Ocean Beach
I used to live right up the street from Poma's. Nice people. Good food. Pizza was outstanding. My experience has taught me that family owned Italian bistros are the best in terms of quality. Franchise pizza parlors like Dominos and Pizza Hut don't cut it with me. However, Filippis is the exception. They still in business?— April 20, 2015 12:22 p.m.
