San Diegans who entered death row in the last 16 years
I remember the Erskine case and read about the day the SDPD solved it. Thank goodness for DNA technology. It has solved cold cases, and exonerated people wrongfully accused and convicted. Fellow Californians, do yourselves a favor and recall Gavin Newsome. He has been a disaster for the state. Just another uber liberal politician ignoring the will of the voters for his own political stature.— December 5, 2019 11:49 p.m.
Comedy in San Diego has its glass ceiling
I love comedy as well. I grew up watching the great stand ups like George Carlin and Richard Pryor. The great skit comics like Monty Python and the casts of SNL and SCTV. And I have been to the Comedy Store in La Jolla and Hollywood. It’s hit or miss in terms of seeing a good show. I don’t heckle, but the comedians have to earn my laughs. That’s my only rule. There’s a difference between being amusing and being funny. There is a visceral thing that happens when someone says something really funny and you burst out laughing. It’s like a catharsis, the opposite of crying. It just feels good to laugh. I have seen scenes in movies and TV shows that were so funny that I would laugh uncontrollably for several minutes. Good comedy is like good jazz. And both art forms involve improvisation. It makes life worth living.— October 1, 2019 3:04 a.m.
Poway – why the rodeo still does well
I grew up in Poway. My family moved there from the south bay in the early 70's. Back then, the town had one grocery store, Big Bear and one hamburger stand called Tom's. No McDonalds and no Jack In The Box, at least for a few years. I thought I would die of boredom that first summer. There was nothing to do except hike in the surrounding hills, provided you didn't mind rattle snakes. The place got a little more fun as the years went by. My mom still has the house she and her husband bought in a 1950's era housing tract. She tells me the price at the time was around 20K for the fixer that it was. Now it's worth around 500K, so she says. It was a nice place to grow up in. But I don't recognize Poway all that much anymore. It's changed so much, but it's still a nice place to raise a family, with good school districts. Don't know much about the rodeo. But I spent some time drinking at the Big Stone Lodge. It was a pretty rowdy place. My friend rented a duplex not too far from the Lodge that he called The Pit, a property that was literally located down an embankment off Pomerado Road. All the good old places are gone now, as well as a lot of memories.— September 8, 2019 4:46 p.m.
Trump supporters expose themselves in San Diego County
Oh, San Diego. When will you foolish mortals realize that Donald Trump is the greatest president who has ever lived? He is perfect in every way. He is making America Great Again, rescuing it from the clutches of international communism and secular liberalism, which is basically the same thing. Soon, there will be an assault rifle in every home with thousands of rounds of ammunition for each family member. The democratic party, also know as the REAL party of racism, fascism, and treason, will be outlawed, and it's remaining practitioners will be stripped of their citizenship, and exiled to Venezuela. Gov Gavin Newsome will be indicted, convicted and imprisoned for treason. And the state of California will be required to under go Conservative Conversion Therapy. He will be re-elected in a landslide in 2020, mainly as a result of your non stop hatred, racism, and bigotry. REPENT!!!!!!! And climb aboard The Trump Train before your filthy souls are snatched by SATAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!— August 9, 2019 9:21 a.m.
First SEAL to complain about Gallagher first to get weapons permit
In an age of terrorism, military personnel, especially those in the special forces community, should be allowed to be armed at all times. And they shouldn't have to rely on the capricious decisions of the police or sheriff's department as to whether they should be allowed to defend themselves.— August 9, 2019 9:06 a.m.

Santee – where everyone wants to live
As an EMT in the late 80's and mid 90's, I transported patients to and from Edgemoor Hospital quite often. I had no idea about the earlier history of the place. Fascinating.— February 5, 2019 10:28 a.m.
