Billionaire Democrat's Balboa Park plan revived by GOP mayor
Let's hope that it won't be destroyed. What I don't understand is why a parking structure is needed at all. I suspect Kevin Culhane's comment about the Ace Parking connection might just be on target.— July 2, 2016 noon
Slater's wave to break at Seaport Village?
How about if we just say no to this? Let's think about this...what is the lifespan of highrise hotels? Does San Diego need all these hotel rooms? Does it make sense to keep building hotels, especially when they block off the bay views and access? Is it smart to eliminate more parking from this part of downtown? Who benefits from all this building? Besides the builders? I have heard it said that the hoteliers own San Diego? Is this proof?— June 18, 2016 10:26 a.m.
Botanical Garden — heck, Balboa Park itself— in desperate need
Exactly.— May 19, 2016 11:14 a.m.
Great Scott delivers at San Diego Opera
I really enjoyed the wit, the musicianship, the craft and the story of this opera. It was a glimpse into the present-day world of opera, very much still connected with all the tradition. The vitality of the sets, the excellent characterizations, the responsive and lively orchestra, and the strong and elegant singing all made it a delight to attend.— May 18, 2016 3:54 p.m.
Cardiff school board proposes $22 million bond measure
Yes, Public (this means You), wake up and look at how many bond measures are brewing out there. It is time that we who pay taxes get to see a spreadsheet that shows what was promised by the last several bond measures, and what was delivered. AND, if whatever group is floating the bond keeps naming the same projects, yet does not deliver, shouldn't we call them on it? At least Bond Oversight Committees exist for those bonds we vote for. But what about Mello-Roos funds? There are no committees with any oversight powers where Mello-Roos funds are concerned, as they were thought to be set up for such specific areas that such scrutiny was not needed. We see that was wrong. Back to Sweetwater Union High School District--which apparently stays in the black by borrowing against Mello-Roos funds every month to the tune of $50-some million. Meanwhile, those projects that Mello-Roos was supposed to fund do not take place. We pay Mello-Roos for 25 years, in addition to our real estate taxes. Some of these Mello-Roos special districts are closing in on the 25th year, which is why--again--there are so many big bonds being planned. Can we say "Enough!"--especially since the degree of honesty and truth regarding where all the money has gone and is going seems to be in very short supply?— May 17, 2016 4:22 p.m.
Aguirre sues governor over records
Must make job hunting that much easier.— May 7, 2016 6:08 p.m.
Leisure class Issa
Because they wouldn't learn anything at a Republican think tank event?— May 4, 2016 8:05 p.m.
Show us the numbers, Civic San Diego
Well then. If we really knew the numbers, maybe we would see there is plenty of funding for necessary repairs in Balboa Park as well as city streets and other infrastructure. But I guess it is much more fun to have hidden stashes of money tucked away from the public. Honestly--and I say that without sarcasm--can we please get some reasonable action from our elected leaders? Can we please get some honesty? Or would the hidden funds be already allocated to private bank accounts?— May 4, 2016 8:56 a.m.
Botanical Garden — heck, Balboa Park itself— in desperate need
So the renovations will result in another rentable party space? Don't we have enough of those? Where will the plants go, or will they end up in a compost heap? Why is it that I completely mistrust this plan? Oh, I know--because there have been so many other hair-brained schemes, such is the parking structure, and the highway curving through the park--all thought up by some civic leaders with more time on their hands than understanding of design, public park usages and the value of tradition.— May 1, 2016 9:14 a.m.
Sempra Energy CEO and boardmembers sued over Aliso methane leak
Don, what do you think the timeline will be on this?— May 1, 2016 9:09 a.m.
