Picket at Sweetwater trustee Cartmill's home
I agree that this needs to be more visible than just picketing at one residence. Recent protests at the board meetings that have been visible via news only paints the union and teachers as rough and out of control. The message needs to be taken to the public at shopping centers, signs on street corners, etc. Tables with volunteers could be placed outside Costcos, Walmarts, Targets, Home Depots, movie theaters, etc. Information with questions like: where have their Mello Roos funds been going?, why are we spending money on new facilities and why are we paying for land we don't have title to? why have the public been lied to in examples of the fire alarms and piles of dirt? We need to use the news in a calm orderly fashion.— January 20, 2014 9:31 a.m.
No process yet to replace Sweetwater trustee Ricasa
I wonder if any high school students who would volunteer in such an endeavor could get community service hours counted toward their required hours.— January 18, 2014 11:55 a.m.
No tough justice for former Southwestern College official
Someone should email Mr. Cartmill requesting the meeting be changed to a more public-friendly time of 6 or 6:30, in a venue that can hold the public. In the interest of public transparency. Of course, a CC must be sent out to all TV and News outlets, including McCann's favorite reporters as well. In the interest of public transparency. The gauntlet needs to be thrown.— January 10, 2014 9:41 p.m.
Few details on Sweetwater district's student-data-sharing deal
Burt Grossman's wife works in the district? Do you know where, and in what capacity? If he gets a board seat, that would make him the boss of his wife's boss. While I don't mind related employees working for the same organization, any policy that would affect his wife would be in suspect. Technically he would have to recuse himself of any decision that affects her. Wasn't his main reason for running because he didn't want a disfunctional board? (Of course, he really didn't explain what his idea of a disfunctional board as he swapped his challenge from Quinones to Lopez. If he meant because they don't always have a perfect agreement on agenda items, the he's wrong, and I don't want him anywhere near that position. I want board members who disagree, while giving their reasons, actually discussing the issue before voting. They shouldn't just blindly vote on items that later have problems arise.) Putting himself in that position, needing to recuse himself for many of the votes definitely cures the "disfunctional" board. (/sarcasm) With regards to the possibility of working above his wife, didn't anybody actually read their ethics policy before voting on it????— January 2, 2014 4:20 p.m.

Santa and Grinch visit Sweetwater District meeting
There was an article/video on NBC website. Cameras weren't allowed back in the area where discussions were taking place. Allegedly, defendants did not like hearing what their lawyers were telling them. 4 were offered plea bargains, but would have to admit to one felony each. The remaining 2 (Lopez and Cartmill) would have to admit to one misdemeanor. Accepting the plea bargains would mean they would have to resign. Those with a felony would have to resign by State rules. Those with misdemeanor were fine by State rules, but per the bylaws of the school board, they would have to step down. Beyond that, I haven't heard anything. Been hoping to here more details myself.— December 16, 2013 12:54 p.m.
Santa and Grinch visit Sweetwater District meeting
I have recently been wondering about Lopez. I do know that she did accept gifts like the others involved. I don't know what her epiphany was, but I do know she cooperated with District Attorney at the beginning of the entire investigation. Like anniej, I see that she has questioned policies in favor of staff, students, and public. She consistently votes in opposition, most often by herself against the other 4, She doesn't speak about her reservations and then vote in favor of an item. (I haven't heard the complete audio from the last meeting, but Arlie and John voiced their reservations about our deficit spending to the tune of 10+ millions annually, then gave their approval????) I've seen her involved in district activities involving the students. One parent recently mentioned she went out of her way to visit students attending a summer arts program at camp in Cuyamaca. Part of my wondering about Lopez takes me along the pathway of time to after houses were raided. It did take me by surprise that, after her assistance, the DA charged her with the 19 counts. (Yes, thank you Tim Tim for your constant reminder.) I had supposed the DA would have been lenient for all the assistance provided, but she did do the crime. I then saw that she plead not guilty along with all the others. Interesting strategy, but I think that if the others are found not guilty, then she would be as well, despite what her detractors insist. Now, with all the plea-bargaining that is going on, I still wonder why she hasn't come forward. As the case continues, I think of all the rats jumping ship, getting lesser charges. I've wondered why she hasn't gone that way, and I got to thinking. Maybe if she jumped ship too soon, the other "I did nothing wrong" defendants might realize that the ship is going to crash into the iceberg ahead severely and jump ship too soon as well. We may lose Lopez to this game of Chicken, but others will fall as well. Then again, these are just the rambling thoughts of a stark raving mad CAVE man.— December 13, 2013 10:11 a.m.
Sweetwater Athletics Hall of Fame scrutinized
Looks like various tutoring programs and after-school activities at various schools. There are various amounts approved back in June, where the documents show an amount and the services starting June 2013 ending at end of school year 2014. Now, more amounts being added without stating why they are being added. More details of reasons for the added costs, such as more students taking advantage of services, would be greatly appreciated.— November 17, 2013 3:18 p.m.
