Sweetwater Board Takes Heat at Meeting
I have a question about that P-1 and it refers to McCann, Cartmill and Brand trying to push it through...If they had passed it now the way it stands, without any mention of the campaign contributions, would their little rule recently added about not placing items on the agenda that had been discussed within the last 12 months have prevented them from having to deal with this for a year?— October 20, 2012 12:36 p.m.
Sweetwater School Board Awards 2-Year Contract to Ed Brand
I didn't get a chance to attend, but was hoping to listen to the audio on the website. But, currently, they are not up yet. Did somebody get lazy and not post them, or are the being censored so the public doesn't get to hear just how badly the board flopped on this decision?— September 26, 2012 11:25 a.m.
10News and Sweetwater's John McCann, True Patriots?
That was Castle Park. Southwest just had to settle for the huge pile of dirt.— September 14, 2012 3:09 p.m.
Sweetwater Union High School District bought iPads for all their seventh graders
Agreed. Unless they're taking my temperature and diagnosing my illness, instead of causing them, I refuse to call them Doctor.— August 24, 2012 11:15 a.m.
Sweetwater Union High School District bought iPads for all their seventh graders
I just love when, after hearing public comments against the iPads, Brand generally scolds everyone, saying that this new technology is here to stay, that our students need to be working with current technology to help them be competitive in the job market. Well, that may be fine for the 7th graders. But what about our current 8th-12th graders? We're going to still send out students for the next 5 years unprepared for "current" technology? (*Nope, we're not trying to lure 7th graders away from the charter schools, we're trying to make them competitive...er, along with all of our students, yeah. Oh, sorry Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen. You know, funding and all. But, hey! just think, in 6 years Seniors will have iPads, too, even though they might not be working. And you 8th graders are just going to have to bask in the glow of the 7th graders iPads. No, we're not ignoring you, we can see you just fine in the light of the screens as they play on Facebook, er, uh, yeah, learning 24/7*.) And even the district's own Director of Education Technology acknowledges unknowns. *Asked if the iPad will stay with the student through high school, Damico said, “There are still some unknowns, like how long the iPads will last or how long the batteries will last. Technology is always changing, too. The iPads won’t necessarily last for six years.”* But we all are just supposed to rejoice in the board's (Brand) decision that this technology is Awesome-Fantastic.— August 23, 2012 2:02 p.m.
Dust Devil Settles in Southwest High’s Dumped-Dirt Debacle
Armstrong has been stationed with the Director of Curriculum's department as a Principal on Special Assignment, since her replacement from Southwest. In recent Boarddoc records show her being reclassified as of 7/1/12 to a Teacher (STBD) (Site to be determined?)— July 29, 2012 12:55 p.m.
Sweetwater Union HS District Votes to Buy iPads for 7th-Graders
While, like others, I am a fan of technology, I question the funding sources the district is planning on utilizing. Yes, the Prop O funding does include technology, I would have thought that the funding would go more for technology infrastructure, as opposed to "textbooks" What concerns me more, however, is that while we do want to get our students up to speed on the latest technology out there, I feel the district is going about this all backwards. I know they want to lure incoming 7th graders from charter schools. But with how fast technology changes, by the time those 7th graders graduate, the technology may be obsolete. If the district is going to do this, they need to work from the top down. Graduating 12th graders are going to need to know current technology before the 7th graders will if they are going to be more successful.— March 5, 2012 2:08 p.m.
