Sweetwater school district board approves Alliant partnership
Oskidoll, I wasn't sure what state agency would follow up on Brown Act violations, but I'm glad to hear it's the DA's office. I'm hoping they are still looking at this district and are not under the illusion that the only potential for criminality was under the Gandara regime. As I recall there was a grand jury investigation that included Brand and the first bond proposition. I can't recall the details but I know the district didn't come out looking good.— May 18, 2013 9:01 a.m.
Sweetwater school district to team with Alliant University?
Student debt is a huge issue in the whole country. Positioning students to assume student debt before they are even out of high school is reprehensible. Fortunately for students there is a lot of internet information. Student reviews like the ones referred to in this article are one way of navigating the maze of private colleges that have flooded South County. The board members seem to be M.I.A. in Sweetwater. Is this the Brand show?— May 13, 2013 7:19 a.m.
Former San Ysidro schools chief Manuel Paul won’t speak
You take a little news break and you come back and what do you find--more of the same. In the end the taxpayers are paying through the nose for all these shenanigans--through the court system, through the attorneys for the school districts, through the bonds to build projects that are not specific to what we thought we were voting for--it's sickening.— April 25, 2013 5:35 p.m.
Past and present officials from three South Bay school districts arraigned
I understand the state is trying to formulate some rules regarding propositions, committees that lobby for them, bond companies--that little dinner of Flores is an example of why we need something. You can't dangle millions of dollars in front of people and not expect corruption.— April 13, 2013 8:26 a.m.
Latest plans for ill-fated L Street land deal
What draws my attention in this story is the last few words of Mr. Litchman "sheild them from enormous financial loss." Them being the district. So we have been hearing the distant beat of financial collapse...and the district seems unable to cut the fluff spending but able to cut the core spending... I wonder if the district was taken over if expendable programs like charters and iPads would go and the county would get the district down to the business of educating the actual students in the district's charge?— April 10, 2013 7:06 a.m.
Before the DA's investigation of Sweetwater school district...
Please clear up a point for me, someone. People I knew who had been called to the grand jury in the past were not allowed to tell anyone about their subpoena. If this is the case, then it's unclear how the Sweetwater admin would be able to contact employees and offer them legal services? Also, if one of the attorneys that was paid is a criminal defense attorney--why would taxpayers pay for that--and what district employee would need that--and would whatever this person was seeking advise about have been committed during the course of working for the public? This doesn't seem right.— March 20, 2013 6 p.m.
Sweetwater school district board seeks to silence opposition
This is beyond remarkable. We have a district that gambles with the public's money, has not figured out ways to help the students be successful, and makes people afraid to express their opinions? Is the only solution the next election? Say it isn't so.— March 15, 2013 8:42 p.m.
Sweetwater Union High School District & Realty Co.
I can't believe a public official would call someone's work. That just seems improbable. I do remember reading, however, that Dr. Brand had called the Union Tribune on the carpet.— March 8, 2013 10:06 a.m.
Sweetwater Union High School District & Realty Co.
I believe that Third Ave address is down there by St Rose of Lima. Didn't the city just narrow the streets down there--that will be fun with 162 units coming out of there.— March 6, 2013 1:32 p.m.
Southwestern College trustee resigns in protest
I agree with Visduh's point--resigning in protest carries weight. Ironically, there are indicted board members at Sweetwater who should have considered resigning.— March 4, 2013 2:39 p.m.
