Sunset Cliffs Not So Natural Park
The before and after photographs here show 1) BEFORE: An area filled with invasive plants, including the highly invasive and noxious Garland/Crown daisy. 2) AFTER: An area cleared in which more gentle native plants have a chance of re-establishing themselves. And in terms of using Round-up: It's a tough call, but that is one of the few things that completely eradicates invasive plants. Without it, even with stringent hand removal, sometimes those plants are impossible to get rid of. Just my two cents.— January 15, 2019 3:42 p.m.
What San Diegans do with spare time
What "spare time?" A relic of a bygone era, or something reserved for the super rich.— October 28, 2018 11:18 a.m.

Lou Curtiss kept the music alive
Jay, you are such a wonderful documentarian of San Diego's culture over the past several decades. Thank you for doing this. Interestingly, I just passed by the old Folk Arts Records on Adams Avenue tonight and was thinking about Lou Curtis. I was a frequenter of Rich Horowitz's Off the Record location on El Cajon Boulevard for the entirety of the 1980s. I remember walking into Folk Arts Records during that period and realizing that I would never be able to fully comprehend the world of American roots music no matter how much I tried. A wonderful and magical place.— July 27, 2018 9:20 p.m.

Del Mar Mesa Preserve
I would argue that fragile and beautiful habitat of Del Mar Mesa--with the constant encroachment of development over the past three decades, and the endless new trail making by the mountain biking community (every fence put up by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife has been broken through or pushed down by mountain bikers)--is in serious danger of being destroyed. What's worse, many of the plants here are rarer and larger than those at our beloved Torrey Pines State Reserve. In a different era, perhaps there would have been the money and will to change Del Mar Mesa into a state park. It's certainly deserving of some protected status, if only to admire the 30+ foot tall scrub oaks and summer holly plants + the awesome vernal pool flowers in spring! If the United States survives in its current state for another century, given the challenges of both climate change and new immigration, I honestly wonder if any unspoiled native habit will be left.— June 28, 2018 3:24 p.m.
Georgia Street Bridge — now promised for September
It must be hard to do something like this (refurbish a 100-year-old structure). I can imagine that no matter how well things are planned, many unforeseen events occur that lengthen the supposed time of construction.— May 27, 2018 9:08 a.m.
San Diego's nine hot spots for illegal dumping
What is this brave new world our elites have engineered? No one can afford anything yet everything is supposed to be "okay" because social values have become much more liberal. If I have to choose between the two, I'd prefer a more conservative society with money spread around more equally than a more liberal society with money hoarded by a few people at the top. And what solution do our elites offer to the lack of affordability for most of us? On the right, cutting taxes for billionaires (because neoliberal Jesus says it's our duty). On the left, letting more people into the country (because social justice Jesus says it's our duty). What a horror show.— May 26, 2018 10:15 p.m.
