Seal You Later
I love watching seals. We take all of our out-of-town friends down to La Jolla Cove to see them. But we humans, sane ones anyway, have dominion over animals, and the beach is for all God's creatures, and that includes divers. It's like the polar bear debut. In my son's school, a girl made a presentation on the supposedly declining polar bears, and finished it up with "I cry for the polar bear." My son said he cries when the polar bear rips the head off a baby seal. We're all part of the earth.

Round Up BBQ Grill
This place overlooks Lake Henshaw on Hwy 76, just west of Hwy 79. I've been here twice in the last year, the first time was not during a lunch/dinner time, and it was great. This time, as early diners on a holiday Monday - 4:00PM - one server was already rushing to take care of four tables. The kid's grilled cheeses were served on burnt bread, but they thought it was okay when they'd bite into the sandwich and the melted cheese would stretch out over a foot long. I ordered the standard $8.99 BBQ dinner special, choice of brisket, pulled pork, or chicken. I incorrectly assumed the meat would come on some kind of bread or roll. It didn't. Just about five bites of warmed wet pork with about two tablespoon's of BBQ sauce on the side. Not enough for dipping or pouring over. Both the pork and sauce had a good taste though. My baked potato wasn't baked, but microwaved, and served already cut in half. Since when do you serve a baked potato already cut in half? Only when the cook has to cut it to make sure its done. It wasn't. No apologies from the waitress. I had to ask for my cornbread, which was supposed to be part of the special. My wife's vegiburger was excellent. The sodas come it really huge Mason jars, plenty to drink. However with a McDonalds, Subway, or taco shop in every small town now, these roadside places that depend on people driving by to stop, can't afford to do things wrong. So here's one more - every serving dish, from the sides of apple sauce to the soda jars and coffee cups, were glass or ceramic dishes. Except the main courses, which were served on white, plastic, cafeteria style plates. Why?

Kia Later...Saturn
More. . . I too never understood the name Saturn of West 78. If they were going for regionalism, it should have been Tri-City Saturn, although the only ones using that name anymore is the hospital. Anything having to do with Coast, Beach, etc would have been better.

Kia Later...Saturn
Visduh, very good dissertation. You could have written this article. The dealership was owned by the same family that owned all the other Saturn dealerships, which except for Saturn Escondido, are now converted to something other car brand.

Don's Country Kitchen Oceanside
I don't like to dump on a place that tries hard, and Don's does, in provide hearty breakfasts, but it wasn't "special" if that means anything. The hash browns are the kind cooked en mass, lots at time, so weren't real fresh or warm. My steak was not as tender as I thought it would be. But portions were huge. I wouldn't choose this as my first little cafe breakfast stop, but would go again. Staff was very nice.

What a way to go - on your own terms. My sister and brother in law both worked at the UT for 37 years each. She called me the day it was announced you left and that was the rumor at the time. My apologies, just assumed with whole stadium issue. The one that I was glad to see go was Steve Kelly. He was a jerk personally, but great cartoonist. I used to work with Michael Kingsman before he went to UT, but he served his 20 and got out too. It a different biz now as you've posted many times. Funny thing, I personally met, shook hands, and had a small conversation with Helen Copley on two occasions, and my sis & bro-in-law never did. I always held that over their heads.

Response to #12 - russl, you & I are probably the only two people left in SD that remember "I Hate Pat Michaels" on KCBQ. I have an "I Hate Pat Michaels" bumper sticker somewhere. Remember Happy Hare? When I had a radio talk show in '89 -'91, we put a show together about old SD radio, and he came on the air with us. Very cool, he got me with a good one on air. I told him when I went to San Dieguito High, he came to visit our radio station, and I gave him a SD Mustangs jacket. He says to me, "I still have that jacket", which of course he didn't. Have you heard the CD put together by Shotgun Tom? A lot of great air checks - KGB, KCBQ, KDEO, etc. Also there's a book out there too that I'm sure you can find on Amazon.

Hedgecock Dropped by Los Angeles Station
Response to #4 - I too have been listening to KFI since Tom L. Remember when KFI didn't have clue what to do when they lost Tom L. and J&K (the first time) Chief Gates, and Corral & Andrew? GIve me a break. I "discovered" KFI in 1988 coming home from Merced in the middle of the night. They were replaying Tom's afternoon show. It was the only signal I could keep from Merced to San Diego. As a former radio guy, I'm old enough to remember the 70s & 80s Dave Dawson on KSDO. He was SD's first real talk host that actually talked about issues, rather than softballs like past hosts. Except for Pat Michaels, who was on late night in the mid 60s on KCBQ. He was a Morton Downey Jr.-type guy.

Two Borrego Clubs Close Amid Bond Default
Hey Don, Aren't you glad you got off the ship before it began to take on water and sink? Who knew that being let go from the UT would lead your careeer to the Reader, where I assume you aren't restricted by let's-build-a-stadium-for-the-sake-of-jobs editors?
— January 11, 2010 11:01 p.m.
Hedgecock Dropped by Los Angeles Station
As good as Roger may be, no one can compete with the PM drive team of John & Ken on KFI AM 640. Rogers' syndicators should never have tried to place him the 2nd largest market, on what could become a powerhouse talk station. They could never get ratings there. They would have done better to place him on two or three fringe stations, like in San Bernardino, Oxnard, or Victorville. John & Ken have cumulative audience of over 1,000,000 listeners per week. In the huge L.A. Metro area, more people hear J&K's views on topics, than read the L.A. Times. J&K are now simulcast on a Bay area station as well, since a lot of their issues are statewide. I believe their game plan is to add more CA stations along the way and they'll become the driving force in upcoming state elections and ballot issues, since the people no longer trust the main stream media. They've already been credited with the huge defeat of Prop. 1A last year. And no politician can ignore their audience when they are called to action.

We're all part of the earth.— February 24, 2010 8:43 a.m.
Why?— February 16, 2010 1:29 a.m.
Kia Later...Saturn
More. . . I too never understood the name Saturn of West 78. If they were going for regionalism, it should have been Tri-City Saturn, although the only ones using that name anymore is the hospital. Anything having to do with Coast, Beach, etc would have been better.— February 8, 2010 10:02 a.m.

Visduh, very good dissertation. You could have written this article. The dealership was owned by the same family that owned all the other Saturn dealerships, which except for Saturn Escondido, are now converted to something other car brand.— February 8, 2010 9:59 a.m.
Staff was very nice.— February 6, 2010 2:24 p.m.

I always held that over their heads.— January 13, 2010 8:57 a.m.

Also there's a book out there too that I'm sure you can find on Amazon.— January 13, 2010 8:41 a.m.

He was a Morton Downey Jr.-type guy.— January 12, 2010 8:11 a.m.

Hey Don, Aren't you glad you got off the ship before it began to take on water and sink? Who knew that being let go from the UT would lead your careeer to the Reader, where I assume you aren't restricted by let's-build-a-stadium-for-the-sake-of-jobs editors?— January 11, 2010 11:01 p.m.

And no politician can ignore their audience when they are called to action.— January 11, 2010 9:46 p.m.
