Walmart to Open in Encinitas, Despite Objections

Hey Visduh, The store is too small for a full sized WM grocery store. But WM has been opening some smaller stores recently, realizing they are losing business from people that can't just run in for a few items anymore becuase of the large size. I think they are understanding that they can't be all things to all people, like the remodeled Oceanside store took out its paint and yardage departments. You can't mix and sell paint as well as HD or Lowes, so use the space for something others can't sell, like $5.00 tennis shoes.

45 Years Ago This Weekend: The Monkees Turned Del Mar Into Clarksville

When I was 10 years old - 45 years ago, I saw the Monkeemobile going to Del Mar. I never believed it was actually the real deal until I read, a few years ago, about the Del Mar train station being used. I was standing in my front yard in Cardiff, east of I-5, and could look down to the southwest on Birmingham Dr., as it headed west, just off the southbound I-5 off ramp. As I glanced up, I saw the red Monkeemobile driving up the Birmingham hill as if it had just come off the freeway off ramp. When it reached the top of the hill it disappeared as it probably headed down to Coast Hwy 101 and on to Del Mar. It was gone in a second, to quick to tell or show anyone. Thanks Jay for confirming I wasn't a crazy kid.

Vista and Marine Base Post Offices May Shut Down

Hey Visduh, Thanks for the comments. MCRD is a marine base as well, although a small one. It is not used as much anymore and most of the former MCRD land has become the massive development known as Liberty Station. Thus the reason for the closure, I assume. BTW - Reader writers do not write the headlines. We can suggest something if it would be witty, but I could think of anything at the time.

San Diego County Fair Worker Calls for Backup

As the writer of this story, I did not stick around to get his name. As a law abiding citizen, I wasn't sure if I had broken some obscure law like one can never climb an open ladder on state property. The best thing to do was leave and end the situation. And then write about it, which I told him I would do. The fair is a fun and safe place. As law enforcement is concerned, I still believe every "real" officer of the 22nd Ag. Dist. Security or the Sheriff's Dept. are very friendly and helpful.

An End to Point Loma’s St. Agnes Catholic Church?

Neighborhood churches like this one should never "parish." Although I've never attended, I've driven by so many times. Its a beautiful, white, crisp and clean place of worship. Hopefully will always be a church of some denomination.

An Attempt to Slow Down Point Loma Speeders

A guy on our street, 1/2 block to an elementary school, and a short cut for many that don't live in the neighborhood to get to I-5, simply puts a orange traffic in the middle of the street during morning commute time, and it slows people down.

Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge Opens to Little Fanfare

The horrible act is not that it was approved - that's what government does - spend money, wise or not -but the crime is the firms that constructed it, the ones responsible for $15 mil cost overrun. There will be no penalty or accountability at all. These firms will be allowed to bid again on other government projects.

Wynola Pizza Express

I agree with Ed's review. The pizza is good and the oven is impressive. I only wished we had ordered more. We split a pizza with two adults and three kids. Not enough. Something Ed didn't mention is their brew their own sodas, and only offer those at the fountain, no Coke of Pepsi. About 10 different flavors, all with local or mountain type names, and they were very good, some flavors you'd never find at any other soda dispenser.
