More Phone Numbers, More Problems

The history behind 760 over-lay - PART ONE . . . 760 area code is still the largest land-sized area code in the country, even after breaking off from 619, and before that, 714. It spans from the Mex. border in Calixico, all the way north to Bridgeport in Mono County, east to the AZ/NEV border, and west into North County. Encinitas is mostly 760, Rancho Santa Fe and Solana Beach are the northern most 858's. The overlay was unprecedented. The non-elected PUC had made their decision and had never, ever, re-considered a decision on area codes. It had never consented to an over-lay, even when big Hollywood names got into the act protesting the split of 213 into 323 on LA's west-side. But one guy, Scott Chatfield, a businessperson in Leucadia, started the ball rolling with save760.com. He got the support of every local & state politician, and chambers of commerce representing the area of North County (because the PUC wanted us to switch to 442 and leave 760 to the more rural areas like Victorville or Mammoth.) Assemblyman Martin Garrick picked up the ball and led the cause. The PUC received over 6,000 letters protesting, enough to get their attention and call a hearing in the community. When the hearing was held. 80 speakers signed up, but the first three speakers sealed the reversal of the board's decision. The first two speakers were members of two local families that told about their missing or kidnapped children, stating their 760 number is the only one their children would know. If it were changed, it would negate the thousands of missing children posters they had placed around the country. If their children were still alive, and tried to call them, they would never be able to reach their parents. Or stop and let it return to what it was for centuries until the flooding accident just a short 106 years ago. That kind of money can be spent on so many other beneficial environmental projects. Can this be seen from Hwy. 395? Where are the railroad tracks going to/from? Off 395 just before Ridgecrest are some abandoned tracks with stored box cars. Wondering if pinnacles in that area - like in your photo?

To the tree-hugging, no plastic bags, don't water your lawn, global warming, power everything with solar, wind, and French fire grease environmental wackos, I'm in the 99% of San DIegians who won't be switching to a bike or taking the bus. We enjoy the freedom of travel offered by the sacrifice of the dying dinosaurs. Not one more penny for bike lanes and public transit until we can drive from San DIego to North County on a Friday afternoon in less than 1 hour. It's sitting in traffic that creates pollution, not driving 75 MPH. I thought by 2020 Pres. Obama promised a Chevy Volt in every garage? That's where they'll stay cuz no one can afford a 100 mile extension cord.

So, you think your boss is a psycho

As a psychopath . . . er . . . business owner, when you lose sleep at night wondering how you're going to pay the company's bills, if you'll make pay-roll, why your business is down one week, then up the next, what government agency will require something new of you, and why you friends are talking two weeks paid vacation or getting 99 weeks of unemployment and you're working more and more hours for less money and can't even stop to think about retirement . . . yes it may make us bosses a little crazy. Hopefully we take time to step back and appreciate our employees who get up every morning to serve us. An occasional thank you, an unexpected gift card, maybe a paid weekend getaway for their years of service, all things we good bosses try to do but sometimes need to be reminded of in our ranting, raving, and struggling mentality. But we wouldn't have a business without our employees. And then there is the true thought that most small business people have no business being in business. They don't have a clue, no plan or vision. They've only created a job for themselves because they can't work for others. Almost every boss I had was an idiot, until I became the idiot and had to pay off the Karma that I created as an employee.

Fall in the Eastern Sierras, California

Thank you Surf Pup, but couldn't get the real shot I wanted. Waited til driving out of town to come home last morning and bright sun was alway in my camera. Every other site I shot had too much light. This shot was in June Mountain parking lot, the only grove I could find at that time of day where sun wouldn't wash out the shot, but there were so many better scenes.
