Newport Avenue Coffee Shop Reopens

OB has a Starbucks? That town has really let its guard down since fighting corp. America for decades. In the 60s a heavily protested, almost ready to open Winchells, was firebombed. Winchells got the message and never opened.

San Bernardino Council Votes for Bankruptcy

San Bernardino is the unwashed arm pit of SoCal. It used to be such a beautiful city in the early years, filled with orange groves and mountain views. 40% of its residents are on some kind of government assistance. Endless streams of homeless people wonder around downtown. Hookers and drugs can be obtained openly on Baseline St. anytime. I owned a piece of property on East 5th St, just a few blocks from downtown and it was worthless. Most of the neighboring properties went to the county for back taxes, after the crack head renters burned them down, as they did my Grandma's old house. You should see what happened to a formerly nice neighborhood in the Del Rosa section of town, north of Hwy. 210. The Big Bear fire came down in 2003 and hopped over houses destroying like every 4th home. Soon the nice family neighborhood became a cars on lawn/bars on the windows place. Very sad. I'm sure the citizens of Redlands would appreciate it if they bulldozed the whole city and started over. Luckily I sold, so I never have to get off the 215 Fwy again. Every former SB council person should be in jail for what they did to that city.

Creation of a Monster, John Gardner

Gardner doesn't get The Reader in prison, and doubt he will ever read the book. How does he profit? Newspapers have dropped the story, which needed to be "completed" by threading events together. When Gardner gives his wack-job comments, it can only hurt him in his sphere of the cell block. Thanks Don for the great review.

Unfortunately I never got to met him. He was scheduled to attend the last two Lone Pine Film Festivals that I go to each October, but cancelled out last minute cuz he got some work. Promised his fans he'd be there this year. He will be missed. I did get to see Mickey Rooney several years ago at Vista's Avo Theater.

Local TV News is Non-News

I think it says it all when the morning "news anchors" have to toss to another person at a "news" desk at the top and bottom of each hour. I ask myself, what the hell have you two been talking about for the last 1/2 hour. But credit needs to go to KUSI, San Diego6, and Fox 5, for programming a local news show in the AM for 4+ hours. KGTV, KFMB, and KNSD all go to network at 7am. And the non-network morning shows seem to have more live crews in the field that the 3 affiliates.

Yeah, I wrote it that way first, because I remember when Don DIego and the Fairest of the Fair would come to your classroom to give us "kids day" tickets. It will always be the Del Mar Fair, but the fair treats me well, so I have to call it by its real name. At least its not the Viejas, Sucyan, Pala, Toyota, Coke County Fair.
