Cool story. Thanks for sharing it. I think anyone who visits the Imp. Valley has an Ocotillo story. Mine is about my wife rushing a cub scout having seizures from Agua Calente campground on Hwy. S-2. to El Centro hospital. Coming upon the Ocotillo fire station around midnight, two volunteer firefighters we sitting out on the station's front porch. They advised it would take longer for paramedics to arrive than just driving directly to the hospital. They did radio ahead to CHP and the hospital for her. Just a coupla guys sitting in rocking chairs at midnight in Ocotillo! They do things a little different there.

Encinitas gas station stories

You are correct, just like Techron (Chevron) or V-Power (Shell) its all the same gas. Cars are designed to run on octane, not the way its refined type. As the article stated, Tesoro refines gas that is sent to USA, ARCO, Shell, and Exxon Mobile stations.

Oceanside Blade press runs again

Thanks for validating my decision from 1994. Weissbach offered me my dream job, a slot as a talk show host with he and the opening crew when KOGO switched to all talk. I reluctantly turned it down having also been offered another dream job in a completely different field. My PD at the time, on KKOS/KCEO, John Van Zante, also concurred I made the right choice, in his words, most starting crews of a new format station are gone within a year. Sounds like that happened to you as well. No regrets.

I had written a little more about Ken as well, but I deleted due to length. My sister, Brenda Harrison, O'side Class of 1960, used to also report on Pirate news for KUDE. Hey Bob, since you're an "old" radio guy, any idea what happened to Peter Wisebeck, he was station manager and host when KOGO went all talk in 1994. No Encinitas home for Mom or Pop

There's also the fact that in bad economies, which will happen in a 20 year lease cycle, chain stores do tend to go out of biz, Circuit City, Fresh n Easy, etc. So these leases are still due, but then can be re-leased to another chain. More commish for leasing agents.

Encinitas Kentucky Fried Chicken flies the coop

Probably was to be a Chase Bank, they were in a huge expansion mode before housing crisis, then halted all new locations. They back out of one at the VONS center on Santa Fe Dr. in Encinitas. (where there was already a U.S. Bank but the center actually has separate owners for various pads, thus we get two pizza places, two banks, etc.)
