Community Meeting with Dr. Ed Brand Superintendent Temporarily Suspended - Stay Tuned!!
Unfortunately Superintendent Ed Brand felt the agenda and format of our community meeting had not been finalized, so he decided not to move forward with the meeting this Thursday August 30th at 7pm. We disagree and feel we should have moved forward with our meeting. Irregardless, he has committed to meeting with our community in mid September to discuss our concerns of open boundaries and how our mello roos funds are being spent by the district. Stay tuned as once we finalize a format, agenda, date, time and location we will let you know.— August 29, 2012 6:12 p.m.
Sweetwater Union High School District bought iPads for all their seventh graders
Interesting to give the students take on these devices. I spoke with two of my daughters friends, one at Bonita Middle the other at Eastlake Middle. The girl at Bonita loved it, she said when the security of the district crashed they were able to download Facebook, You Tube, Instagram, Temple Run, and all the other fun SM they enjoy. She said its fun posting on FB and Instagram during class. She wasn't particularly impressed in how it was helping in class. BTW, she showed me all the apps she had downloaded during that window of time. The girl at Eastlake was frustrated. Hers crashed and has been having problems. A classmate knocked it off her desk and the face broke. She feels like she is falling behind. She likes it for the apps but said its a distraction during class as most kids are on social media sites during class. Both said the teachers knew less than the students on how to use the device. This is a small sample, but you wonder how many other kids are having the same experiences.— August 25, 2012 8:07 a.m.

Education News in the Sweetwater Union High School District
Cv Issues, we have been studying the mello Roos issue the last few weeks. They are primarily in eastern chula vista in the newer communities including rancho del Rey, Otay ranch, San Miguel ranch, rolling hills ranch and eastlake. The Sweetwater Union High School District has 17 communities facilities districts (mello Roos districts) within its boundaries, again in the eastern chula vista area. We pay mellos Roos tax for various infrastructure items including schools. There are limitations that govern what this tax can be used for - primarily school construction/infrastructure and items that have a useful life of over 5 yrs. Education News in the Sweetwater Union High School District
I will be attending the Board Meeting this Monday night to speak on these two issues. I also anticipate giving the board and supt a letter from a number of Eastlake residents that are very concerned about these two issues. If anyone wants to join our effort please let me know. Gang, the district will have a retired SUHSD principal, and a member of the bond oversight committee on the panel. The principal will be vetted by the CBOC chair to check for bias.
