What costs $600,000 per day to run?
The link's broken, Founder; or rather, 'can't be found.'— August 6, 2010 2:53 p.m.
The emptiness of 2010 SDSU grads
Reply to 2: Thank you Bohemianopus! I appreciate the love. Just because people don't comment, it doesn't mean people aren't reading.— August 6, 2010 2:37 p.m.
Prop 8
The Civil Rights Movement and same sex marriage are different issues. Most people can distinguish a person's racial ethnic background by sight. That's not possible with homosexuals. And I first heard this from someone else while in school... The idea of comparing the two fights never did sit right with me. Isn't it sad that differences can be so polarizing? And yet, differences are what make live interesting. Otherwise, we'd all just be agreeing with each other and have nothing to talk about.— August 6, 2010 10:45 a.m.
Dialing For Dollars
I'm not sure if calling someone right before quitting time would be effective... The person might not answer the phone at all.— August 6, 2010 10:01 a.m.
Taking A Trip To The Food Bank...
An hour and a half total? That's rather quick, I'd say, but you were the only one there! My internship senior yr included a food bank and most days there was a line waiting to get inside even before we opened. This was especially true on Mondays when we got the grocery store leftovers; or at the end/beginning of the month when incomes are running low. I don't know if I'd say it's a John Wayn attitude, but there is much to be said about pride and having to ask for help. I remember several people break down and cry as they told me why they were there. (and I never asked why!--Big Rule of social work)And then there were the few times I had to stop myself from crying while I was with a client. You don't mention this Rifa, but were you talking to the receptionist in the main waiting area? My social work senses are tingling.— August 6, 2010 9:04 a.m.
Jim Hill and my Happy Heart Attack Anniversary
Happy one year. Having never met you, I'm glad you're alive, as I'm sure your family is as well.— August 5, 2010 4:28 p.m.
What Does Ethics Mean?/edited again 8/7/2010
I've thought of ethics as the integrity to follow through on one's values and beliefs; and not be persuaded into following someone else's idea of what should/n't be done. The cooking example, for example. If the cook that dropped the steak values fast service above all else, then reusing the falling steak wasn't unethical in his eyes. For the cook that saw it all happen, he, at least in the scenario, values health and clean standards above fast service. He didn't follow through with his values/beliefs. Also, having read through the comments, I appreciate Parker's and Nan's clarification of the initial source. I kept wondering if the whole post was Nan's or if parts were borrowed, mainly because of the different formats. Scanning the blog again, the format makes more sense. The Reader blogs aren't meant to be academic, nor should they ever really be. But, it's always my habit to give credit where credit is due and name all sources and quotes borrowed. And I love this. It's so rare for one's beliefs and definitions to be questioned, that few ever take time to actually actively examine their beliefs that once something happens that shocks our core, few are able to fully properly explain why or what shocks us so very much.— August 4, 2010 9:25 a.m.
The emptiness of 2010 SDSU grads
Wow, I guess I really was that lucky/blessed... I only spent about 5 months unemployed after I graduated last year. And with very little debt thanks to the federal government and my mother's job. I agree with Fern, there's no need to take a job you don't want, especially if there's something better coming up. I turned down a job offer with my internship. I knew I wasn't going to be happy there and it was temporary. Being self-focused doesn't mean one is narcissistic, it means one has the luxury to only have to think about oneself. Thinking about others becomes secondary, unless the individual decides to make it a primary focus... As for Gwynn, with the language studies, volunteering at a non profit, or applying, will help with her lack of spoken language skills; as will hanging out in City Heights and chatting up strangers. Everyone loves it when non native speakers try and speak your native tongue. Otherwise, I was unimpressed with the graduates. 35k a year isn't enough? I was overjoyed with my job and I'll only gross about 29k. That's more than my mother earns now, and (I think) more than my older brother grossed last year. As one of my teachers put it, one can learn and grow immensely from just one year of employment. So, Andy, the finance major, isn't much into cars. He works w a car company now, use that and look for something within the company in finance. Selling enrollment? Don't think of it as selling people an education, think of it as giving people hope for the future. Come next year, the economy will keep going up, and the degree will be be more useful than ever. Don't chase the money, chase the dream. Idk if it's me and my circumstances, but I never expected a great job to just materialize. I never expected 35k a year. I would have been happy with a 10/hr part time job. I knew that whatever employment I found was only going to be stepping stone towards what I truly want. A step towards becoming who I want to be.— July 29, 2010 9:57 a.m.
Why don't you eat meat?
I don't eat meat when the meal isn't meat. That said, I'm too much of a carnivore to stop eating meat. I tried going vegetarian once as a new year's resolution. I lasted a week. Also, does anyone else find some of these answers contradictory? "And chickens are the most tortured animals on Earth. So, I won’t eat like that. I do eat eggs and dairy." Chickens aren't only 'tortured' for their meat...— July 26, 2010 2:21 p.m.
What's your favorite day of the year?
The winter equinox or the first day of summer. The first day, because it means the days will start to get longer and summer is on its way. The second, because it's the first day of summer! And that's my favorite time of year.— May 20, 2010 2:51 p.m.
