Here we go again
Thanks for your comments Mindy1114, DelawareBob & shizzyfinn. First, shizzyfinn, the Colorado & NY articles are from 2007, & both state one of the biggest concerns lies with defending lawsuits (usually brought by ACLU). This is strictly a US problem where anybody can sue anybody for anything at any time (except for Statute issues). So, the cities, counties, states, etc. end up footing the bill for the Court to rule on constitutionality of a law. Also, I never mentioned rounding up 20 million people & sending them home. I do think there should be an enforceable E-verify system in use for ALL employers. If some of our costs go up, so be it. The Desert News article deals solely with the possibility of errors in the E-verify program. Gee, I don't know about you, but I am human and I make errors. So does everybody. It is not the end of the world & errors will be made. Period. The NC article deals with just that, a mistake. I would agree that was awful and should not have happened. But the same problems occurred in Mexico & elsewhere. Just for kicks, take a look at the Mexican Immigration Laws. Now that is eye opening & they are serious about enforcement. Aliens cannot work in Mexico!! My animosity about this issue is solely an issue of ILLEGAL immigration. There are legal ways to enter the US. And what about the costs of food stamps, medical care, schooling, etc.? Despite your assertion to the contrary, very few ILLEGAL aliens pay taxes. And many border crossers are also entering the US for the sole purpose of delivering a baby who is automatically a US citizen. That law needs to be changed. Our economy is in a turmoil right now, lots of us have lost money & I could not find anything specific on a decrease in illegal immigration due to our economy. Now, as for allowing one & all in would make America stronger, I absolutely disagree with that concept. Resources are finite. We do not have enough room (land), unless you want it to look like Tijuana shanties or those in India. I do not know where you got the information that the birth rate will not sustain the aging baby boomers. Please read: "http://www.susps.org/overview/birthrates.html" "http://www.susps.org/overview/numbers.html" The US ranks third in the world in population, behind China and India. Believe me, I do not want to live where there are masses of humanity crowded into small spaces, without electricity (we are faced with shortages), water (severe droughts), food (thank you we can & should pick our own). The US also has a HUGE trade deficit (is there anything not Made in China?). So NO MORE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION is something I believe strongly in. Follow the rules and enter legally.— May 24, 2009 3:59 p.m.
Close Encounter
You are right about making it too easy not to do anything. How about this: Continue to work on that border crossing, making it harder to get across; enforce the laws that require employers to verify legal status; give those "menial" jobs to the American homeless. They say they will work, so lets give it a try. I am sick & tired of hearing people (like Geraldo Rivera & La Raza) say that the illegal Mexican (& other nationalities) are the only ones who will do those jobs. That is such a load of BS. Deport the illegals, give the jobs to the homeless and see what happens. I have said it often, somebody did a lot of picking & packing before the illegals started their onslaught & American businesses got cheap labor. I had never even seen a Mexican person (in Michigan) until I moved to California over 40 years ago. If they are not here legally, deport them. Period. End of story.— May 14, 2009 6:57 a.m.
It's the City
It was a slip, like back to the future. I am well aware of the airport authority, but my brain slipped back to the days of the Port District. After all, it was only about 6 years ago!!! So, please forgive me but, it is a blog, not a reporters column.— April 20, 2009 10:29 p.m.
NOISE
I understand your point of view. My complaint is that all of those people who founded this country and the millions who have immigrated here over the many decades, chose to have English as the MAJOR (not only) language. I know the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Statue of Liberty inscription. I, in no way, am suggesting that people stop speaking their native language. I also disagree with your position that I have a limited view, far from it. But, there does need to be some consistency if only for the fact that we have so many people. Voters information, pamphlets, drivers' license, etc, all are printed in many languages. I also am in total agreement that knowing another language is something we should strive for. Right now our school system does a poor job of even teaching English. I just think that speaking English is important. And the phone systems irk me!!! Thanks for your input.— April 20, 2009 11:05 a.m.
America's once Finest City
Americasnoisiestcity; First of all, I absolutely respect my own life but I do not have children or pets. Where do you live? Now, can you provide some details about the noise? Can you describe the noise? You mentioned "refrigerator sound". My fridge is pretty quiet! Is it a whine?, a hum? an engine? What do you think is causing the noise? Do you have a guess as to the location of the source? You mentioned the sewage department, is it coming from their plant? Which City Council district are you in? The downtown noise is a combination of music, loud voices, cars/trucks, etc. You can send me a direct e-mail and I can do some research for you. [email protected]— April 10, 2009 4:21 a.m.
ENGLISH???
Dear Burbclaver: I do not claim to be an 'expert' on anything, so I am not sure what upset you so much. My blog, my opinions. This particular entry contains facts, arguments, & opinions. Perhaps you could tell me what facts, structures, reasoned arguments would help you understand my writing. I would not want to be known as one who engages in a "ramble-fest".— March 27, 2009 6 a.m.
Where can I get some peace and quiet? Not PB, not Poway, not Hillcrest, not downtown
I was in the process of researching Noise Abatement laws in the City of San Diego, when I came across this story. I happen to live downtown and I accept that noise is a part of downtown life. But, there is a limit. I would like to communicate with the author, Ollie, regarding any assistance he/she can provide. There are several "clubs" in the Gaslamp area that play music so loud that walking by, across the street, hurts the ears and prevents any communication. This was at Whiskey Girl. At the very least they should close the doors & windows or move into an underground shelter! So, Ollie, please contact me via a message in my blog area: auntsandiegoapeaks, Downtown.— March 20, 2009 8:43 p.m.
San Diego building, building, building
johnegger, thanks for the comments. The California Theatre WAS a beautiful building, now it is a decaying, smelly mess. Something should have been done many years ago to preserve it. Trying to hold on to any part of the historical facade now, is cost prohibitive. The new condo buildings are a mish-mash of styles. There is one near the ballpark that looks like storage units, with orange siding.— February 27, 2009 8:22 a.m.
Greatest Sports Movies Ever
Auntsandiegospeaks wrote a blog in response to Daily Crasher. It was just posted. SurfPuppy, are you kidding. Rudy is a feel good movie, but far from the best sports movie ever. Rocky is a love story and an underdog who fights his heart out. Towelheadedcameljockey, NO. Field of Dreams is about the love of baseball, the ultimate in fanship. Rudy is a feel good story about acceptance. No comment about a Jet Li movie. Cardig, Bad News Bears is cute. I agree with you on Chariots of Fire, it's not on my list either.— February 25, 2009 4:05 p.m.
Fairness at IRS?
Thanks for the comments. Shizzyfinn, I want an investigation. The pundits are having fun with this. Jay Leno, Jon Stewart, Dave Letterman, all suggest that if Congress & all other "bigwigs" just paid their taxes, there would be plenty of funding for the Stimulus Plan. Mr. Williams, the IRS Code is voluminous. A bonfire seems appropriate. Start over and do it right. Some rules are so convoluted the IRS interprets them differently at different sites.— February 6, 2009 4:29 a.m.
