The Similarity Between the Orca and Toyota

Ditto 3 & 5. Those born in captivity have to remain that way. Supposedly, Sea World hasn't used captured Orcas or dolphins in quite some time. There's plenty of video of them being born in captivity. The argument that's brought up about zoos and aquariums is that for most people, especially children, it's their only opportunity to be exposed to these animals and appreciate them as existing in reality, rather than just on the tube. Once, this was a rural nation in which most people lived on farms and were exposed to the intelligence and personalities of animals on a daily basis. Now, a lot of kids are so underexposed to animals, they don't even have a pet. It's virtually impossible to get people to care about animals if they have no exposure to them. There are horrible zoos that still consist of small cages with cement and bars, and there are world-class zoos like the one in San Diego. Same with aquariums. Care of the animals housed varies greatly. I think I quoted Ken Kesey before as saying, "No one can judge the value of another's trip." Everything's a trade-off. There's nothing pretty or ideal about being a wild animal. They have no medical care when they get ill and sustain horrible, maiming injuries. They freeze to death. They die for lack of food or water. They die because their environments have been poisoned by man. Nature is absolutely brutal, "red in tooth and claw." Is an easy life in a good zoo or aquarium with handlers that deeply love their animals better? Maybe, and maybe not. Maybe for some entire species, and not for others. Maybe for individual animals, and not for others. I always find it kind of annoying when I hear broad statements made about the intelligence of an entire species, for example. Anyone who's spent any time around them knows that animal intelligence and personality varies tremendously from animal to animal, just as it does with the human animal. Some seem quite happy in their captive situations, while others clearly are not. Behavioral experts for each species know how their animals behave when they're happy. With orcas, for example, they supposedly don't breed if they're not relaxed and content. The orcas have been breeding very well. On the other hand, they're called "Killer Whales" for a reason, both in Nature... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWsN63PRCW8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8GaDuCvYbE AND at Sea World: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52o5yV6G7tY&NR=1 From CBS news, the recent Orlando story: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qz_SHumjgPQ

Weeping for Coco

Well, anyone who b*thces about hunting HAS to be a vegetarian. Otherwise, it's hypocritical. (Both Grant and Daniels are veggies, if I'm not mistaken. Don't know about Mindy.) The way animals are housed and tortured on the factory farms that supply food for the rest of us is far more barbaric than hunting, IMO. I think about going veg almost constantly. I'm not happy that my particular constitution seems to require a LOT of protein and fat to feel well. Otherwise, I'm perpetually hungry, unsatisfied and runny. (Yeah, I said it. Save your TMIs.) Best diet for me? Atkins. My body type and nutritional needs do not seem to gibe with my conscience. Bummer. Unfortunately, I'm not willing or content to subsist on tasteless, expensive protein substitutes from the Pricey Store. I do try things occassionally, but usually find that they suck. So, I'm probably not going to stop eating animals anytime soon, unless I come across other protein/fat sources that are a.)tasty b.)inexpensive c.)easy to prepare. With regard to hunting, I agree that Bubba Redneck, who kills things for sport and couldn't achieve a head shot if he tried (and wants those heads anyway to hang next to the Budweiser sign), desperately deserves an ass whooping from Bambi. However, those who hunt to feed themselves get a pass. A lot of this country is rural and poor. They don't live down the street from Whole Foods, and their only chance for sufficient protein is in the form of venison, packed in the freezer to last throughout the winter. For a large part of humanity -- which is itself part of the animal world -- killing by necessity has always been a part of life. Life is messy. Charlotte explained this to Wilbur in Charlotte's Web, which most of us read when we were eight. C.S. Lewis once remarked that any book worth reading when you're ten is still worth reading when you're fifty. If anyone missed it, there's still no better way to spend a Sunday morning. http://www.alibris.com/booksearch?qwork=1026447&m…

Aw, Chief Scanlon looks like a nice guy. http://www.coronado.ca.us/Newsletter/200705/CACOR… Keep in mind that he's dealing with the criminally moronic on a daily basis, and has been doing so for 30 years.
