beware of wet dirt!!!

You're not THAT squirrel, are ya, Rocket J? That squirrel gets AROUND! http://blogs.nationalgeographic.com/blogs/news/ch… "How did he get THERE?", you might well ask. Well, he hitchhiked: http://vulpesffb.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/cras… What a busy guy. Understandable that he'd need a little vacay. Quite the ladies' squirrel during his downtime, apparently: http://s.buzzfed.com/static/imagebuzz/web03/2009/… Ciao, Bella! http://www.ciaobellagelato.com/blog/wp-content/up… He's older than he looks, too. http://s2.buzzfeed.com/static/imagebuzz/web02/200… And who could forget, the shot that plucked him from obscurity? http://www.brewster.ca/uploadedImages/Brewster/_g… Now THAT's a "Crasher!" Chad better watch out. I think this squirrel's after his new gig. :) (For the uninitiated, here is the original story): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoliLJIJ1UE

Update: Beautiful Jessie has come home! And: What we learned about lost/found animals

One more thing. I just noticed, while looking at how to make a donation to Rescue House, that they have a great option right here: http://www.igive.com/welcome/warmwelcome.cfm?c=23… It's through something called the "iGive" network. Apparently, it includes LOTS of places where we all shop already, including eBay, Home Depot, Office Depot, Drugstore.com, Amazon, and on and on. You just have to register. I'm doing that riiiiiight now.... Wow. This is all pretty cool. http://www.igive.com/welcome/registrationintro.cfm Aaand I just went through their page to Amazon & threw a couple of books I've been wanting into my cart. Update: Beautiful Jessie has come home! And: What we learned about lost/found animals

Seeking a pet using the internet can EASILY be a fulltime job. My advice would be to take as many days off work as is feasible, get yourself a pot of coffee, sit down at your pute with your phone next to it, and get to work. Enlist the aid of anyone and everyone who might be sympathetic to your cause, including rescue orgs, county shelters, veterinarians, and local clubs for pet enthusiasts (breed specific or not). Heck, enlist the aid of the HOMELESS in your area, offering them a handsome reward. (I personally believe that the top line of any flyer should be the word "REWARD" in font as big as possible, and that the amount should be as much as you can afford.) Don't forget to place a LOST ad in EVERY local newspaper, both their online and print editions, and keep it current. Also check the FOUND listings on a daily basis. And, as in this case, find a spot on the internet to park a blog flyer with GREAT pictures that your emails can link to. Daniels' blog played an invaluable role in all of this, not only because of the pics posted, but because her excellent description of the cat herself and the words of the distraught owner bring them to life for the reader and draw everyone to want to help. Big kudos go out to Rescue House, the org that had Jessie. In less than 24 hours, that email whipped along through at least 4 members of that organization. Those cat ladies were on the ball! http://www.rescuehouse.org/ Perhaps consider a donation in Jessie's name, if you can. :)

Update: Beautiful Jessie has come home! And: What we learned about lost/found animals

Re #25: Ya know, Grant, I've thought about that in the past. :) I can't imagine a more gratifying business to be in, but I also really can't imagine charging anyone for it. As for my part in this chain of events, I didn't do anything that someone couldn't do for themselves: Simply go to Dogpile (a search engine that donates to pet charities) or Google, and put in keywords "Cat" (or Dog) "Rescue" and Your City. Then start working the list of links that comes up. Emails first, and then if you don't get quick results, start dialing the phone. That wasn't even necessary in this case. In addition, of course, you want to check all of the county animal shelters on a daily basis. San Diego's are available to check online. I would also physically go down there with a flyer in hand, and make sure I spoke to every intake person who processes animals brought in, give them each a flyer and post it on their bulletin board, if they have one. After that, I'd call and/or visit every nearby vet you can get to with that flyer, talk to them and/or their receptionist, and place it on their bulletin board as well, if they have one. (In Jessie's case, however, this vet was MUCH farther away than we would have expected.) In the case of cats in particular, there are usually multiple rescue organizations in a city of any size. I happened to know this already about San Diego from research on animal orgs that I did while I was down there. There are even rescue orgs for specific BREEDS of both cats and dogs. For example, here's one for Bulldogs in San Diego: http://www.sdbr.org/ And a list of Golden Retriever rescues in every state: http://www.absolutelygolden.com/rescue.htm SoCal Siamese Rescue: http://cs.siameserescue.org/ Check out this great list of multiple rescue orgs: http://www.pgaa.com/california.html And a Breed Rescue list: http://fanciers.com/commercial-sites-for-cats/ani… (Cont.)
