In San Diego clubs Sunday-Wednesday, February 16–19

Mr Monk's pod cast each week in "The Reader", of what bands are playing at local clubs includes info about the bands and even samples of their music. All done in a smooth and entertaining style, a bit retro, that reminded me of listening to the FM disc jockeys in San Francisco and LA during the birth of the 60s and 70s counter culture, when freestyle FM radio jocks ruled the music airwaves.

Justin Timberlake's 20/20 Experience

I like JT because he seems like a nice guy and is multi-talented, dancer, singer, actor. He is a twenty first century version of past song and dance men Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. And like them, he's got more charisma and likeability then he does a great singing voice. But as a package with the dancing and acting and looks, he's a star. But this album, where he has to rely on his falsetto, girly, voice is like a blockbuster movie with great special effects and no substance. Every song seems like it depends on all kinds of studio background tricks, voices, sounds etc. I just don't get the hype on this album. Even with the same type of voice, Michael Jackson could carry an album without all the studio special effects, and just good songs. I don't know if JT can? Certainly not on this album.

People, Hell and Angels, by Jimi Hendrix

Good review, thanks. I listened to a couple of cuts on this album and was bored. I saw Hendrix for the first time when I was a student at SF State University in the 60s. He played in the gym in a free show with The Chambers Brothers, Buffy St Marie, and the Electric Flag. Mike Bloomfield was lead guitar for the Electric Flag and I thought at the time he blew Hendrix away. This was before Hendrix turned his playing into performance art. I know he got a lot better on the axe. But I never loved his music, and this oldie from the archives reminded me of Hendrix in the gym learning while he played.

Hey islander9, I'm a bit older then Fagen, but musically for me it was same old same old, Steely Dan sound. But that is what is so great about music, just like art, it is subjective. I appreciate your feedback and surely you heard stuff, I didn't. Thanks for the comment.

The Only Place, by Best Coast

this is a terrific CD and the opening song, "The Only Place" is worth the price of admission. I'm glad somebody reviewed it. they need more exposure.

Bob Dylan's Tempest

He is still a terrific song writer and poet. I was really blown away by the 45 verse title poem about the Titanic disaster set to a waltz music background. He's a very senior citizen now and still is comming out with unique and original lyrics and rhymes set to music. This CD was really a pleasant surprise for me. His voice is totally shot and his singing takes away from the listening pleasure of his lyrics and the music. Some of the songs on this CD could be popular hits if sung by other people. "Soon After Midnight" and "Narrow Way" for example would hits for other artists with good voices.

Mission Hills, via Brooklyn

They bring you delicious fresh popcorn to nibble on before you even order. How clever and pleasing is that? This restaruant would be a success in San Francisco or New York. If it was in LA it would be a hangout for the cool and famous. The food is delicious and the ambiance is alive. Young souz chef Collin Murray, paid his dues learning his trade in several other hip San diego eateries, including his last gig at Cowboy Star. But my only warning is if you go there once you're doomed to want to go back again and again.
