Lest anyone have doubts about the rah-rah connection between the Downtown Partnership and developers, from http://downtownsandiego.org/index.cfm/fuseaction/…
"For a comprehensive look at the Downtown redevelopment projects, call the Centre City Development Corporation at (619) 533-7100 or visit them on the web at www.ccdc.com. There, you'll be able to learn about the history of redevelopment in San Diego, download the latest housing guide and obtain up-to-date information on all redevelopment projects.
"The Centre City Development Corporation is the public, non-profit corporation created by the City of San Diego to staff and implement Downtown redevelopment projects and programs. Formed in 1975, the corporation serves on behalf of the Redevelopment Agency as the catalyst for public-private partnerships to facilitate redevelopment projects adopted pursuant to redevelopment law. Through an operating agreement, CCDC is the Agency's representative in the development of retail, residential, office, hotel, cultural, educational and public improvement projects."

I really like the part about "pursuant to redevelopment law."
Can't have too much paying attention to the law at CCDC, can we? — July 8, 2010 9:13 a.m.
Sense and Nonsense
RE #5: I may have jumped the gun on Tuesday's City Council Item 335 "Cessation of Interest Accrual on [Redevelopment] Agency Debt to the City and Extinguishment of Agency Community Development Block Grant (CDGB) and Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Section 108 Debt to the City. Barrio Logan, Centre City, City Heights, College Area, Eastern Area, Linda Vista, Mid-City, Midway/Pacific Highway, Peninsula, Old Town, North Park, San Ysidro, and Southeastern San Diego Community Areas. Districts 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8.)" The staff recommendation is to adopt the resolution R-2010-864, but at the top of the agenda item, it states in bold: NOTE: It is anticipated that this item will be returned to staff. Good riddance. It's either that, or the note was just intended to keep attendance light and comments breezy.— July 8, 2010 12:55 p.m.
Sense and Nonsense
Apparently, instead of getting rid of CCDC, the City Council will attempt again to get rid of $288 million in Redevelopment Agency debt next week (July 13), some of which must have ended up either at CCDC and/or in the annual bonuses of SEDC staffers during the reign of Carolyn Smith. I wonder if anybody at City Redevelopment has let HUD's Office of the Inspector General in on this one... or if anyone has flagged this HUD community block grant disappearing act as an internal City complaint...— July 8, 2010 12:38 p.m.

RE "No Prime Time Meters": I'm just starting to look into a new SDG&E proposed rate structure for billing by when electricity is used during the day. If approved, obviously all smart meters will need to be software-upgraded live, in real time, where all existing meters will be test-bed guinea pigs. In many scientific endeavors, discovery of a thing entitles one to name that thing as one chooses (or as others may choose, in the first person's absence of choice). On that basis and by the content of the Depression Definition above, I could be excused for the sake of not wishing to mislead by referring to the current 3-4 year set of economic facts as MILAN'S DEPRESSION.— July 5, 2010 2:11 p.m.
Seismic Sensation
When I was a student body president at City College in the late 80s, the San Diego Community College District had some seismic drillings done, down around what is now the Seville Theater on campus. Sure enough, the Rose Canyon fault line runs right underneath... and I'm not all that sure that Hillcrest is immune to its effects, should it decide to open up and swallow anything between the F Street bookstore on University and the Vons bordering Dove Street...— July 5, 2010 1:50 p.m.
Law Firm Giving Financial Advice Taking No New Cases
"But facts about a person are not necessarily libelous, eh?" Are facts EVER libelous? Of course, I'm assuming the "facts" are TRUE... why even bother mentioning FALSE facts about somebody then not expecting some kind of slap-back?!? I always thought the truth of statements made was an automatic defense against an allegation of libel, slander or other defamation. Indeed, truth is the magic armor shielding all of investigative journalism...— July 5, 2010 12:33 p.m.

Personally, I think this is just another waste of tax money. If I have to suffer the relative indignity of drinking tap water, then so can city employees. If they want that not-so-fresh bottled water flavor, they can just run it through a Brita filter... on their own dime. On the other hand, if they do go through with this with its multi-layered certifications, then I say they must grant free access to all the homeless downtown. It's the least we can do, since all of us are apparently paying for it.— July 5, 2010 12:18 p.m.
Banished to the Backcountry
RE #4: Yes, a mind is a terrible thing to be wasted... er, something like that! Bold thinking and bold action is exactly what America needs, as pretty much everyone who considers herself or himself to be a Wall Street Master of the Universe is more or less resigned to nothing good happening in this economy for months or years. Maybe for most of the next decade for those who lost a home to an underwater mortgage. Hemp is such a marvelous renewable, possibly harvested several times a year in our climate? Everything from cloth to biofuel and the raw material for stronger-than-plywood laminates and plastics if done right. Bold thinking and bold action is why I wrote http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/encanto-gas… More to be blogged later...— July 2, 2010 7:01 p.m.
