More bird stuff: The following ran in the May 7 Neighborhood News section of the Reader. For the past month or so we've had an adult pair of great horned owls hanging around in our palm trees, usually right at dusk. On May 6, at around 1 p.m., and while it was raining, we heard the crows going crazy outside the house. It turned out that it was a baby owl in our neighbors' tree and the crows were harassing it. The little guy was pretty wet and ticked off. He made several lunges at the crows if they got too close. I'm sure he would have torn them to shreds. We scared away the crows and continued to check on him. All dried out and not looking as ticked off at 6:45 p.m. Had to chase a cat away...could have been for the cat's own good. He may be a little guy, but look at those claws! Hopefully he will get home safely and tell his "Mom & Dad" what those mean ol' crows did to him and they'll hunt the crows down and teach them a thing or two! He did move up to higher branches at around 8:00 p.m. and this morning, Tuesday, May 7, he was no longer in the tree. Our neighbor, whose tree the owl was in, said she heard “who-who" last night, so perhaps he was calling out to his "Mom and Dad" to come find him. To see original story plus photo, click [here][1]. Be sure to wait till after the one-minute mark on video to see action. **Video: Eagle watch at Ramona Grasslands** *This filed today, May 7, by Billy Ortiz* For the first time in many years, according to the Wildlife Research Institute, a young pair of bald eagles are nesting and raising a single offspring. The eaglet is about one month old, according to a couple of bird watchers who have been coming every Saturday since they read the story in the Reader earlier this year. On May 4, as I joined the watch, the male eagle, the smaller of the two adults, arrived with dinner for the eaglet. The nest site is approximately 1.5 miles from the road, so unless you have a pair of strong binoculars, you won’t see much happening in the nest. It takes 35 days for an eagle egg to hatch, then 10–12 weeks until they fledge, or fly out. If all goes well, in about 8 more weeks the young eagle will spread its five-to-seven-foot wing span and leave the nest. To see video on the website, click [here][1]. **Credible neighborhood bar open for business** I watched Dan Diego’s get built along Morena Boulevard as I passed by it a couple of times every week. The “coming soon” sign tantalized me, dangling a new restaurant out there. The only thing was that it looked a little silly, like a confused faux-Irish sports bar calling itself a “Euro cafe.” What is that, exactly? Read entire blog by Ian Pike [here][1]. **Sinister.** The people who found Yoshi are keeping her, says the type on the photo. (This poster was on 25th St near the 94 on Friday.) http://sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/apr/0…— April 1, 2013 1:02 p.m.

**Unintended effects** (from Joan FitzSimons story in Neighborhood News on Reader website) On Monday morning, March 18, hundreds — if not thousands — of Talmadge and City Heights commuters found themselves trapped in long lines of traffic trying to access Aldine Drive through Talmadge. With horns honking and fists shaking, unhappy drivers may have forgotten that notification had been posted along Fairmount Avenue and Aldine Drive warning that that two new stop signs would be installed along this busy, accident-prone corridor. The stop signs were installed along Aldine at 47th Street on Friday, March 15. One stop sign controls northbound traffic to Fairmount; the other controls eastbound traffic to the Euclid and Monroe intersection. Morning commuters quickly discovered that their routine drive is no longer convenient or efficient to access Fairmount Avenue and I-8. Read entire story [here][1]. This Chargers house on Irving, just north of Dewey, is most impressive place in the area. Was not able to get the sides of the house in photo, but they include some interesting artwork too. http://sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/mar/2…— March 27, 2013 2:37 p.m.
neighborhoods/coronado -- Coronado
Heard two foreign students talking burgers on the 901 bus to Coronado from downtown early this month. One of them said the best was Wendy’s, downtown. The other one said Burger Lounge in Coronado. (Wendy’s in Coronado long gone, replaced by the Tavern.) So I asked local research assistants the best burgers in Coronado. Right away they said Burger Lounge (922 Orange Ave - $7.95 for basic burger – grass-fed beef). But then wait, no, what about the Slam Burger at Danny’s (965 Orange - $7.50 for ¼ lb. – plenty of [Yelpers love Danny’s][1]). Also strong support for Deluxe Gourmet Hot Dog (tiniest of all Nado storefronts, 943 Orange – burger and burger dog (!) each $5.99. Is it the eye-level signage that has made the difference? Danny’s puts out their “NBC voted best in San Diego” sign. Deluxe sign says their beef is never frozen. But assistants finally settled on Nicky Rotten’s – way down on First and Orange. Their 13 kinds of burgers, all at $11.95 including fries, have beaucoup toppings like bleu cheese, bacon. Me, sorry, but price is important – Burger King is still my king – a whopper at $3 is best burger deal. Down past Nicky Rotten’s at the Ferry Landing. P.S. For years Danny’s used to promote their Slam Burger with a quote from novelist [Alex Theroux][2], who stayed off and on in Coronado writing for the *Reader*. Can’t remember what Theroux said – something like “best burger I’ve ever tasted.” [1]: http://www.yelp.com/biz/dannys-palm-bar-and-grill… [2]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Therouxhtt… http://sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/mar/2…— March 26, 2013 2:54 p.m.
neighborhoods/julian -- Julian
OK, got a burn permit two weeks ago from CDF for brush burning- lasts a month. My buddy calls Julian FD last weekend and gets over-the-phone OK to do deep-pit BBQ on private land - just has to make sure brush is cleared away 30 feet, no overhanging trees, and there is a water source available. Then another buddy tells me you can get a year's permit for campfires on private land. What's with all the diff. rules?— March 25, 2013 2:54 p.m.
