Life insurance in reverse
"You ask where the cons find the marks. One place is church. A person who accepts all the tenets of a religion -- whatever religion -- can accept the promises of a con man without checking. They take the con on faith, just as they take the religion on faith." Local politicians are very well acquainted with this fact, and count on some of them to provide dedicated voters who ask no questions.— June 9, 2015 1:04 p.m.

I hope they solve this issue quickly so someone can jump on the reason why my local BevMo has been out of 10Cane rum for two weeks! How does THAT happen?— June 8, 2015 2:20 p.m.

Tommie on the comeback
I'm a little confused about the total amounts we are talking here...if these folks now are living in subsidized housing, with food and say, job training, are the costs significantly lower? They are all probably still receiving ongoing health care, too. Is the bottom line amount per person more or less than was spent on them before this intervention? I appreciate that some will move on to be more self-sufficient, and that is a great thing, but it's difficult to compare apples and oranges, or at least it is to me.— June 5, 2015 3:38 p.m.

Meanwhile, over at Canine Corners...
"Sterling spoke about the effect on a dogless person living between two homes with four dogs in each residence. If four dogs bark on one side and four dogs bark on the other, it "degrades that person's quality of life." If a person has four dogs who are well-behaved and do not bark excessively, is it better or worse than a person who has just one dog, but who sits at the fence and barks from the moment their owner leaves in the morning til they get home in the evening? It's very interesting to see how our local government folks decide what we are and are not allowed to own.— June 1, 2015 2:50 p.m.
