29 years in jail for failed attempt to kill O’side cop
One point not covered in this thread is WHY the appeals court granted a new trial. Bowman is a tough sentence judge, and he also seems to make rulings that avoid reversal of trial results. What happened, Eva?— June 23, 2021 3:52 p.m.
Kori Jensen cleared by D.A. on house in North Oceanside
Oops, I follow the O'side politics just enough to get confused. You make a very good point about the chain of appointees. Sanchez was right when she wanted an election. I was sure Weiss had run for the council when he vacated the mayoral position. It's more important than ever for the residents of that city to pay attention in elections, know their candidates, and vote for those agree with them. For all too long the opposite has been the rule. Campaign one way, vote the other.— June 16, 2021 4:30 p.m.

I think we are saying much the same things. But if the voters hadn't elected Rodriguez, Keim, and Weiss, they would not have had the opportunity for their mischief.— June 11, 2021 7:47 a.m.
Third aircraft carrier not wonderful for everyone in San Diego
San Diego had for too long relied on the Navy/USMC and defense contracting to keep the economy healthy, if you could call it that. I've lost track of the number of times that Navy "billets" were regarded as a local economic mainstay. But now we have a housing crunch, and all those squids/swabbies/whatever-you-care-to-call them are straining the housing market. Well, guess what? That has been true for years and years, but only now has it reached crisis stage. The real stress comes from decisions made far from here. There was a time not so long ago when the Navy had multiple home port facilities along the West Coast. But then all of the capabilities in the SF Bay area were closed down, and then Long Beach closed too. The Navy now has only two places to home port its large ships on the west coast. One is here and the other in Puget Sound. While the ship count isn't anything that seems that large, when there are only two homeport spots, things get strained. San Diego is now paying the price, or should I say the Navy personnel are paying the price of short-sighted decisions made in regard to having necessary places to home port the Navy vessels.— June 9, 2021 7:36 p.m.
Kori Jensen cleared by D.A. on house in North Oceanside
If the residents of Oceanside want better, they have to elect better. They deserve what they get now, due to being uninformed about the candidates. The council was known a few years ago as a snake pit, which was an apt description.— June 8, 2021 7:52 p.m.

This move by the DA is consistent with her and her predecessor in the office. A virtual absence of any prosecutions for local political corruption has been the rule in the county for many years now. And if these misrepresentations aren't corrupt, what is? The many points being made by the recall movement are true, and now a pair of the pro-developer cabal on the council are disavowing her. It would be impossible to make up a story like this one. She's a defiant one for sure. Just when you think that the O'side council is getting its act together, a majority of it pulls a stunt like appointing her. There were many choices available to them (I think even Rocky Chavez was one of them) and they picked a carpetbagging unknown out of the field of applicants. When I learned that the DA was "investigating" I predicted nothing would come of it, and there was no surprise when I was correct. But having two of her supporters announce a loss of confidence WAS a surprise. Ya' nevah know.— June 8, 2021 7:36 a.m.
Swagyu Chop Shop’s must-try 18-dollar burger
There must be enough market for that wildly expensive beef to keep those two operations in business, and maybe even profitable. Then again, who couldn't clear a profit at those prices? Who buys this stuff? The Japanese economy in the 1980s was loaded with excesses like these, but since then it fell into a deep recession that lasted through the 1990s, and hasn't really recovered since then. Interesting for sure, but I'm not going to be beating a path to Poway to buy. Sheesh!— May 15, 2021 9:04 a.m.
Chandelier Lounge brings something unique to Jamul
Upon first glance at the headline, I thought that somehow Ian had done a review of the eatery in that monstrosity casino in Jamul. This place seems most out-of-character with the rough and ready image of Jamul and all points east on Hwy 94. Sounds wonderful, enough to entice me from No County to E County for a meal. Since I ra threly get out that way nowadays, that may be a while. Hope it stays around for a long time.— May 5, 2021 3:52 p.m.
Columbine and Pepper streets get serious patch
The city of SD has some third-world streets that just never are repaired. And that claim that streets north of I-8 are not allowed to deteriorate is laughable; I drove on Clairemont Mesa Blvd between 163 and I-805 recently, and it was so rough and rutted that I marveled that cars were not being broken to pieces while trying to drive on it. I knew that thoroughfare forty years ago, and it was a good ride. It has likely been neglected ever since then, and now is a ragged mess. As to why a badly broken up street that needs serious work gets deferred when streets with lesser needs are resurfaced is nonsense. A city government that is properly run takes care of the worst first, not last. Oh, but I sort of answered my own question about how the city runs. And Kevin F wants to be governor, touting his record as mayor, the mayor who promised to get the streets--all the streets--fixed. He failed miserably with that, as he did with most of his "initiatives."— May 5, 2021 8:12 a.m.
Sara Jacobs extends House District 53's foreign junketing
Aside from all the details of the junket and the destination, has anyone else made note of the fact that this billionairess congresswoman is just that, a billionairess? She's probably the richest woman in the House, uh, well, Nancy Pelosi may have an edge on her, but only slightly if at all. So, why take the luxury junket? The reasons are like everything her office puts out: platitudes with vague references, and no substance at all. If she had wanted to get a real picture of that part of the world she might have, at her own expense, traveled in the usual attire of a female in the area, and experienced what most women traveling in the area have to deal with. Ahh, but she doesn't want to travel swathed in layers of fabric that cover her from head to toe and keep her virtually incognito. No, after old "gravy train" Susan, Sara has a tradition to uphold of traveling luxuriously on someone else's dime.— May 4, 2021 8:21 p.m.
