Voice needs an editor; Chula Vista mayor needs hotelier cash
The UCSD parking and traffic are to be expected. The university is expanding its role as "research university" while adding to the student body. That is typical of UC campuses that can raise the funds for expansion. None of the campuses was designed with thousands of commuters in mind. So, you'll hear the same objections in Los Angeles, Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Santa Cruz, and even Santa Barbara and Riverside. They all have too few parking spaces on weekday mornings, and there's a crush of traffic then. Later in the day the lots clear out and there's plenty of parking. The campuses all charge a high fee for parking on campus, whether it is for professors, staff, or students. And parking regulations are always zealously enforced, with dozens or hundreds of citations issued daily. They all complain about their parking problems and traffic, and they build parking structures. But none ever seem to catch up with demand. UCSD will be getting trolley service soon. The campus mavins were keeping the brakes on trolley service for a long time, never liking the proposals that were floated about how to serve the campus. Now they're all for it, or so they say. The sheer lack of space for all those cars must have brought that on. That will help with the crowding, but won't eliminate it for sure.— May 16, 2018 3:40 p.m.
Just a Lo Jack recovery at Michaels
Lo Jack works. In my extended family, there was an example of how effective it can be. She got her car back, and the cops had the thief in custody. In this instance, if there was no good physical description of the suspect, they had their work cut out for them. You might wonder why it took four units to make the recovery, but if they had been faced with a "hot stop", that would be best done with even more cops on scene. Yes, unnerving for the spectators, but if ignorance is bliss, and the cops were not there, they would have never known a car thief, maybe armed, was in their midst.— May 16, 2018 8:24 a.m.
Chargettes urged to be sexy
If he wins this case, it is due to a technicality. The facts of his case aren't going to change. Although I didn't like to listen to him on AM radio, I'm not sure he severely wronged many or most of his clients and followers. Too many people who need to take charge of their nest eggs and plan for retirement don't do it, and end up poor when the paychecks stop coming in. Worse yet some cannot quit when their health and bodies just can't bear the burden of going out every day to work. Ray was encouraging people to think about the future, save some of their earnings consistently, and invest the funds intelligently. Without that, there would have been no provision for financial freedom in retirement. Getting the best possible returns on such investments would be wonderful, but most of us fall short of that. But getting a decent return is better than no savings or no return at all. I'm willing to cut him some slack, despite his misleading claims.— May 16, 2018 7:36 a.m.
Chargettes urged to be sexy
Poor old Ray. He don't get no respect. He had to endure his daughter marrying the flake sports hero of all time, Ryan Leaf. For a time Ray tried to excuse/justify Ryan's missteps, but he couldn't keep it up indefinitely. So the "happy" couple divorced, and Leaf spiraled down and down and ended up an imprisoned convict in Montana. What ever happened to Ray's daughter?— May 14, 2018 8:22 p.m.
Chargettes urged to be sexy
I doubt that anything has changed much. The teams may be less blatant about wanting sexy cheerleaders, but they get them anyway. That incident in 1978 was probably deemed newsworthy locally, but I don't recall it. If you look at the cheerleaders in college, while some of the squads emphasize gymnastics and dance, others are booty shakers and not much more. In fact, a few years back, UCLA was being criticized for having the girls executing moves that were straight out of strip joints. All of cheerleading by attractive young women walks a fine line between too sexy and boring. But one thing. Was the term "wholesome" yours, that of the headline writer,or that of the Chargers at the time? Wholesome just doesn't fit NFL cheerleading and never has.— May 14, 2018 1:20 p.m.
Private prisons back con center measure
That group photo is amusing. The woman at front center is actually smiling, or attempting to smile. The others? Nah! I"m fairly sure that none of them appreciate being called Walmart rejects. But we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that prisons are not intended to be nice places or anything pleasant. It's punishment you know. But as to the way these contractors manage to milk systems, there is plenty of room for scandals. If one of these outfits can find a way to get into the homeless sheltering game it will, and there's no assurance it will do any permanent good for the chronic homeless.— May 14, 2018 8:52 a.m.
Beware fake Apple pop-ups
Sad that we cannot trust anything that arrives by email. A few months ago, Cox was advising us to make some alterations, and even though it was legit, I was most reluctant to do anything until I'd talked to them on the phone. Turns out that it was legit. But then there was the time when "Windows Service Center" called one day with an urgent message that we needed to clean malware from our computer. The Hindu accents were almost unintelligible, but with Microsoft, who could be sure? Out sourcing has run rampant. It took me ten to fifteen minutes to determine that it was a scam. They didn't want money, only "credit card". What's the difference? And then to do their magic, we would shut down the computer so that they could do the cleanup by satellite. Uh, huh. These scammers are very creative indeed.— May 12, 2018 7:05 p.m.
858 S.D. County educators collect pensions of $100,000+
CalPERS must be in dire straits. Politicians are all-too-eager to promise generous benefits to their public employee supporters, yet seldom actually require them to pay enough to fund the payouts. A worry? You understate the situation. It will be a crisis, and sooner than we think.— May 12, 2018 6:41 p.m.
Oceanside's civic freak flag
Geez, Ken. Why don't you tell us how you REALLY feel? I've posted harsh comments about my neighboring city, but you've gone over the top. And Jerry Kern wants to replace "Bulldozer Bill" Horn as the No County supervisor? Good luck Jer, and good luck to anyone who votes for him. There have to be better choices than he.— May 12, 2018 6:33 p.m.
858 S.D. County educators collect pensions of $100,000+
Some states put all their employees, and those of their cities, counties and districts, into Social Security. California did not, and I'm not sure that a school district could decide to do that, even if it wanted to. For not much more than the current FICA tax rate, the teachers in public education get a real retirement benefit, far more than most would ever receive from Social Security. But now, the state system, STRS, is underfunded, and the new teachers have to put in a larger share of their pay, while the districts are required to boost the match they make for all active participants. One thing that hasn't been done, though, is to reduce the amount to be paid, or to eliminate that highest-year-as-base for over 25 year teachers.— May 12, 2018 7:30 a.m.
