Goodbye, Columbus: this critic's first R rated film
Sorry I missed this iconic film the first time around. I was a little bit distracted in Vietnam at the time. But I'd heard plenty aboutit afterward, and I both read the book and saw the movie version of Portnoy's Complaint. As to the plot of that movie, I haven't a clue, and that was how forgettable it was. Maybe I need to get a DVD of this movie and see it at last. Reliving my youth? Good old Ali McGraw had that late-60/70 "look", and it sold so well. But could she act? I also missed "Love Story", although I actually had read the book. The movie was slammed by many reviewers, and that helped keep me away. I did see "The Getaway" when she and Steve McQueen, aided and abetted by Slim Pickens, made an improbable story about a crime involving the Texas & Pacific railroad and its passenger train traveling west across Texas to El Paso. Her performance, if you can call it a performance, was woody and a "just let me read my lines" effort. Why was she so acclaimed when her actual chances to act left so much to be desired?— August 7, 2021 8:45 p.m.
Del Mar bluffs cause heartache
If this situation arose in Germany, where the railroads are part of a national network, the tunneling would have happened years ago. The Germans keep upgrading their system, and they have been shortening the routes between major cities, often by using tunnels that stretch for many miles. But here, the federal government has at best a passing interest in the condition of major rail lines. This one, now publicly-owned, is used mostly for passenger service, although there is a respectable amount of freight coming into the county, and some automobiles going in and out. Then there's TJ that gets its propane supplies by rail from San Diego and also cement and steel. One approach not mentioned so far is the notion that NCTD could buy the first row of those blufftop homes, demolish them, and move the rails many yards inland and away from the edge. Expensive? For darned sure, but looking at $billions ($5 billion has been mentioned, and that's probably low.) If they propose that, the howling that would result could echo off the moon! But who is going to finance those $ billions? At this time nobody has anything like a plan for financing it.— August 6, 2021 1:34 p.m.
San Diego showers money on homeless
This sort of thing, repeated a hundred or thousand times over explains why I had to navigate a wretched stretch of Camino Ruiz between Calle Cristobal and Mira Mesa Blvd. That was one of those needy streets that Kev-boy promised to get repaired. Well, he didn't, nor did he get Calle Morelos and its many speed bumps put into a driveable condition. SD has never been a rich city with money to burn, and yet it burns money year after year. So, what suffers? The wretched streets, the prone-to-burst water mains, the parks that have little or no shade, and the residents who pay and pay taxes, and see a pitiful return for their dollars.— August 5, 2021 8:42 p.m.
None
My own experience with Torrey Pines High when I was a teacher was that it was heavily Asian in addition to having a large white population. Those fuzzy faces in the photo were not all white at all. But so what? While this attempt at satire fell flat, it did point out how educrats write and otherwise express themselves. A couple of the comments just point out how full of themselves people can be, and how they have no sense of humor at all. It wasn't intended to be anything serious folks!— August 2, 2021 3:36 p.m.

Mom carried him into Escondido's Learning Jungle
This is a sad, sickening story. Being a new grandparent, again, and looking at the infant, I cannot imagine how such stuff happens, and yet I know that it does, and more than many of us think. At least it now appears that he's in good hands, and can grow up without being constantly bruised and in danger of fractures.— July 30, 2021 4:03 p.m.
Oceanside facing big comeback
You know the story better than I. Did Oceanside High go back to using the bandshell for graduation ceremonies? It always seemed like a natural for that use. The school does have its football field and bleachers that could accommodate such ceremonies, but that's very close to noisy I-5.— July 8, 2021 8:14 a.m.
Oceanside facing big comeback
Over twenty years ago, that bandshell was scheduled for demolition to make way for some sort of development. Oceanside High had its graduation ceremony there since time immemorial, but the 1998 ceremony was announced as the last one there. As to what didn't happen I have no knowledge, other than that it still stands. It is a nice spot and setting, and should be used. We will see what happens this time.— July 4, 2021 8:37 a.m.
Conviction of Army & Navy headmaster for child abuse is overturned – updated 12-6-21
The prosecution needs only to get a conviction on a single felony count this time. The sentence would take Barton out of circulation permanently, and that is what the DA should want. We will see what happens this time around.— July 4, 2021 8:30 a.m.
