Probe clears Cano on building without permits
Can we say "whitewash" boys and girls? Can we spell it? W-h-i-t-e-w-a-s-h. Just another episode of So County politics and corruption run amok. How many more such stories are out there that go unnoticed and unreported? Lots and lots, I'd venture.— July 27, 2018 5:21 p.m.
Luiseno Indians robbed by one of their own
This is another case of an embezzler getting away with the theft because nobody was paying attention. Whoever was her boss should have been reviewing the disbursements at least weekly. It would/could have been "nipped in the bud" at the start, long before she had been able to steal such a large sum. As to the hiring practices of the band/tribe, they are sovereign and don't have to conform to any sort of standard other than their own.— July 25, 2018 7:44 a.m.
Afternoon at the Nelson Bar
So who was the author of this pithy little piece?— July 24, 2018 5:09 p.m.
Best large cities: San Diego fifth
I can bet that WalletHub will not look at SD schools in such a favorable light. Three years ago, it didn't rate them at all well, and I doubt much has changed.— July 24, 2018 3:14 p.m.
Union-Tribune vet takes over N.Y. Daily News
If you peruse the websites for the Times and for the U-T they are remarkably similar in content. (One small piece of fallout from the joint ownership and management is that SD news now shows up frequently in the Times. I find that amusing.) The editorials in the two papers are often the same, and the flavor of them is always that of the Times, never the "old" U-T. That is not surprising in that the old U-T is gone with the wind, whether you like it or not. Some, not including myself, may prefer it this way. So, why doesn't the Times just shut down the U-T and try to convert the subscribers to a local version of the Times? It probably has to do with keeping advertisers and their cash stream coming in rather than any other factor.— July 24, 2018 8:15 a.m.
Best large cities: San Diego fifth
These ratings, even when the methodology is explained, often yield some absurd results. I've seen some of the rankings put out by US News for schools, and couldn't fathom them at all. But let me state emphatically that if these ratings refer to the San Diego City Schools, aka San Diego Unified School District, they are wrong. That district has been a mess for decades, and while it has a few standout schools, just doesn't get it right. (If it did, there would never have been the turnover in top management, it never would have had Bersin as its "supe", etc., etc. There are some schools and school districts within the county that might be considered standouts, but even averaging them in with the others would not justify that conclusion. As to San Francisco, depending upon the part of the city, it can be very nice if you like certain things. It starts expensive, and goes up from there. Space is at a premium, and housing is rarely spacious, even in million-dollar condos. Most of the affluent white and Asian people eschew the public schools there, and shell out big bucks for private or parochial schools. So, in that way it is even less desirable than San Diego.— July 24, 2018 8:06 a.m.
San Diego's no-helmet scooter documents under wraps
Yours is the same argument that we heard back when seat belt laws were proposed, and later on when motorcycle helmet laws were debated. Unfortunately, when some adult puts him/herself in harm's way with inherently unsafe conduct and is injured, the system is expected to care for him/her. That means the taxpayers pay for the medical care, and often for some sort of financial support for life. And, hey, what's the difference between these scooters and motorcycles anyway?— July 22, 2018 7:08 a.m.
County unemployment rate rises sharply
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't those reported figures "seasonally adjusted?" And if they are, wouldn't the distortions you mention in your first paragraph have been adjusted out? As in, if every year the UE figure goes up by .8% from June to July, don't the statisticians reduce the figure by that amount, to keep the stats from jumping around? If they do, who can be sure they did it right? No, there are just too many questions about how these measurements are made to allow their unchallenged use.— July 21, 2018 8:21 p.m.
Hopeless addict but not a dealer
There is no mention of why he doesn't speak or understand English. What is his citizenship status? (Oh, I know that's a touchy subject and that local law enforcement is legally enjoined from bringing that up.) He's been arrested 19 times for drug offenses, and has been convicted at least once. What sorts of sentence(s) has he received for his previous crime(s)? Yet after all of the arrests and conviction(s), he was still out on the street doing something with a prohibited substance. Does something not seem right here?— July 21, 2018 7:50 p.m.
Investor-owned utilities with sky-high rates
