Oceanside Swap Meet sellers wait and wonder
Martinek must be a really popular guy in Oceanside; he pans their swap meet as the worst in the county. Shucks, although I have almost no familiarity with swap meets, I always figured they were, more or less, garage/yard sales in a central location. Maybe someone needs to educate me about the higher class swap meets, what they provide, and where/when they operate. That piece of land, located where it is, has great potential. The sea breezes come up that valley in the afternoon/evening, and cool things down beautifully even after the hottest of days. The area needs more commercial activity for sure; Oceanside is now crying poor-mouth about its lack of revenue. If there were anyone in that city with some vision and leadership, he or she might be able to come up with a better use of the area, one that would solve some municipal shortcomings for good. Nah, nevahappen!— September 15, 2018 7:21 p.m.
Border patrol agents not fully trained for assaults
The takeaway from this is that the government set up an elaborate tracking system to generate information that would be used to make decisions regarding resource allocation. Now, years in, that government admits that the reporting system isn't accurate. Does this make you feel at all comfortable with the reports and statistics that any part of that same government generates? The usual pattern is for the government agency to defend the flawed data it generated, and the flawed decisions that followed. So, I suppose that ICE and Customs and Border Protection do deserve a little credit for candor. But can't they do better? We depend upon such federal agencies to get it right, and they keep missing the target.— September 15, 2018 5:40 p.m.
National City's Cano accused of Hatch Act violation
Sadly he's typical of many So County pols, constantly fudging at the edges of legality. I'd always assumed that federal employees were prohibited from holding any political office. Over many years, I cannot recall ever hearing of a local office holder also working for the federal government. There's a reason for that prohibition, and that's to keep the federal employee as non-partisan as possible, and also to keep local government free of dominance by the federal government. The idea has to do with state sovereignty. How about the DA starting an investigation of Cano? That's what she should have done already when the code violations were revealed. If he's done nothing wrong, he has nothing to fear, and would get rid of the cloud. But, silly me, I forget that there's no political corruption here in San Diego County and hence nothing for the DA to look at.— September 14, 2018 2:12 p.m.
Calif. insurance department hits NRA with cease and desist
The order was, according to the state Department of Insurance, issued because the sellers did not have a valid state license. If that's all it is, I'd guess the matter can be smoothed out quickly. Many gun owners are concerned that if they use one in self-defense will find themselves having to deal with criminal charges and/or lawsuits. So, they're looking for some peace of mind--just like buyers of most insurance policies.— September 14, 2018 9:38 a.m.
U.S. audit hits Sheriff 's crime lab
I've long speculated about why the supes maneuvered Gore into the office when and how they did. He had plenty of baggage that should have made anyone leery of having him running a police force. Yet all of it seemed to be ignored and swept under the rug. Since then his supporters have been many, despite a number of scandals involving the department. When he had one of his deputies oppose him for reelection, I'd hoped that the guy would have at least been able to give Gore a run for his money. But nobody in the media seemed at all inclined to remind the voters of Gore's record in the FBI. What will it take to get him tossed? Probably nothing will ever have that outcome. He'll retire when he's darned good and ready, and will have a hand-picked successor picked and groomed. Yeah, if this info had been released prior to the June primary election, it might have made some difference. You are right that it would have not caused the election to have a different outcome.— September 12, 2018 12:52 p.m.
Picked up 40 bricks in Chula Vista
JW, that's an excellent reminder to anyone who has contact with the cops. If you don't want self-incriminatory statements used against you, regardless of your innocence, make none to anybody, even the most sympathetic bystanders.— September 12, 2018 10:06 a.m.
County pushes more density in rural San Diego
My wife grew up in Lemon Grove so I knew a little about the area. When it incorporated in the mid-70's, it was built-out, except for the dairy property. At the time, I commented that it was too late to take charge of its own destiny and design. I don't doubt your analysis of the present situation. The complications that it brought by incorporating are those you outline. Not all such areas will suffer a similar fate if they incorporate.— September 12, 2018 8:08 a.m.
Picked up 40 bricks in Chula Vista
Does the admission that he's done this before make it OK? Or maybe lessens the severity of the charges and sentence he'll get (assuming he gets sent to the joint) as a result? He didn't even get busted at the border--it was a pickup on the US side, acting as a courier. Wow! How stupid can they get and how much money is involved.— September 11, 2018 6:15 p.m.
County pushes more density in rural San Diego
There are a number of towns in the county that have not incorporated. They are at the mercy of the whims of the five little kings and queens on the board of supervisors. If Lakeside were an incorporated city, its residents would not have to appear "at court" and beg the supes for whatever they can get. Their own locally elected officials would have a say. There are a number of other such unincorporated areas that might benefit from city-hood. They are, by my count, Fallbrook, Spring Valley, and even Ramona. Becoming a separate city isn't the answer to all ills; it brings a new set of issues and complications. But it does bring some element of home rule to the area.— September 11, 2018 5:17 p.m.
JustWondering: A google “street view” photo of the tree in questi...
All San Diegans should wonder why anything that involves city government is so complicated and uncertain. But the city seems both unable to deal with truly hazardous trees and is also removing trees that the residents want to keep. And nobody really knows just who owns the tree? Come on, guys. Now that it has been butchered, "the tree will survive." Is that so? Only if it is trimmed carefully to get it back in balance, and with the gross cuts already made, most of the remaining crown would have to be removed, IMHO. The "slobberin' city" at its finest.— September 9, 2018 9:34 a.m.
