What happened in ransomware attack on Port of San Diego
We the public don't really know what happened, or what it cost, or how badly it disrupted operations, or much else, do we? Yeah something happened, and either it was bad, or wasn't so bad due to preventive measures. But the measures weren't in place or they were, and the immediate reaction was the correct one, or maybe it was't. Don't you feel reassured and comforted? I don't.— April 10, 2019 8:25 p.m.
Rancho Santa Fe security and sheriffs try beanbags, pepper balls, dog on intruder
Unless his defense attorney can convince a judge that he's nuts, he's in for some bad times. But it could be worse; he could have died of those wounds. The description doesn't mention how many times he was hit out of the four rounds fired. His actions set up the situation for maximum force by the cops.— April 10, 2019 2:38 p.m.
New North Park Target starts debate on grab-and-dashes
"Shrinkage" is the retail term for missing inventory. That can be caused by many factors, but rampant shoplifting is a big one. I watched a nearby Stater Brothers deal with snatch and run of liquor and beer. They build a display of soft drinks that runs about 25 feet from the entrance across in front of the booze department. A thief has to go around the end of that stack, and while it is not foolproof, inhibits many would-be rip-off artists (and probably exposes them to more security cameras.)— April 2, 2019 11:20 a.m.
Why did Kevin Beiser accusers keep quiet so long?
Ponzi, tell us what you REALLY think!— April 2, 2019 7:17 a.m.
Why did Kevin Beiser accusers keep quiet so long?
While the usual procedure is for the DA to wait for the cops to pass the case, if they think there is one, along for possible prosecution, there's no legal mandate for that. She has investigators, and if there was ever a situation that cried out for their use, this is it. The buck passing will go on until the voters awaken to the grim fact that this DA and her predecessor turn a blind eye to local political corruption and to misdeeds of local pols.— April 2, 2019 7:16 a.m.
Daley Ranch: from Kumeyaay harvest ground to Robert Daley’s illegal squatting
A point of clarification in this piece is that the city that bought Daley Ranch is the City of Escondido. Buying up that property before it was developed is one of the best things that city has ever done. The trails on the ranch are getting deeply rutted in many areas, and along with being very rocky in spots, can be hard going for hikers and mountain bikers. Last Sunday we hiked in Daley, but accessed it from the west entrance on Cougar Pass Road. (That's not to be recommended unless you have a high clearance vehicle--the road has some rough going.) That entrance attracts a few equestrians, but is usually fairly quiet, unlike the La Honda entrance which often is very busy. There's another entrance on the east side, off East Valley Parkway, close to the Escondido Humane Society. A total of three different access points offers plenty of variety of trails, scenery, and degree of use.— March 27, 2019 9:03 a.m.
Why did Kevin Beiser accusers keep quiet so long?
It might be noticed that, when these accusations were made, his liberal and Dem backers and friends were quick, very quick, to denounce him and demand that he go away. As to him keeping his job with the always-mismanaged Sweetwater district, I'd guess that they will scrutinize him and his conduct closely. If he was doing anything inappropriate with kids he'll pay the price. Don't you wonder where the DA is in all this? These accusations are of criminal acts, not just something to resolve civilly. She needs to step up and either press charges or announce that there isn't enough evidence.— March 26, 2019 7:41 a.m.
Ranch Guejito opens doors to San Diego mountain bikers
Having that ranch open up to a bunch of bicyclists is most unexpected. Who'd a thunk it? For the past many years the owners came across as hostile to the public, and had proposed developing part of the property. When that didn't go over well, the negative vibes increased. If you were part of that group, consider yourself lucky to see the terrain; very few folks have unless they have flown over it.— March 25, 2019 3:45 p.m.
Union-Tribune online numbers plunge 22.44 percent
You grew up on newspapers that didn't slant/spin/opinionate the news? Where was that? Which newspaper(s)? All of them do that, and always did. In fact, in the 19th century and into the early 20th century, most "news"papers had an axe to grind, big time, and did that continuously. Too many of them nowadays just print the content of press releases from government agencies and corporations without any skeptical treatment or verification. The articles come across as dry and purely factual where in fact they usually are putting the best face on things that are not clearcut at all.— March 24, 2019 9:31 a.m.
Flim-flammer Flaxman fumes over USC, Stanford, Georgetown, and Yale application bribery snafu
Poor old USD just don't get no respect. A long time ago and not-so-far-away, we used to say that all it took to get into a school with initials that aren't all that different from USD was a high school diploma and a check book. Oh, I know that USD has some excellent offerings and is a fine operation, but the notion of having to buy/bribe a student into that school is really ridiculous. All this points up the nonsensical aspects of this scandal, and the sums of money that people laid out to get their kids into a school that doesn't deserve the reputation or the tuition that it charges.— March 22, 2019 8 p.m.
